Toucher and Rich --- Everyone Else Has Some Work To Do

Has anybody picked up on some Toucher vendetta against somebody else at the Hub? He opened a show last week with an intentionally vague warning about "screwing with" him or the show, somehow related to an MC gig he did at the B's home opener. At first I thought it was a reference to EEI in some way, but it became apparent through little asides here and there since then that it is somebody at TSH. It's not Tanguay and Zo (they interact jovially every day and Toucher wouldn't be able to help himself), and it's not DA (at one point, he made a commend like "yeah, as far as on-air people at the station, Amendalara's is cool. I don't like everybody, but he's fine.") So it has to be Mazz or the odds-on favorite, Felger. As a regular listener, I'm kind of curious - those two shows had that "Favre sucks-off" bit they played around with for a few days, but that's been about it. Maybe the whole thing's too inside, but it got my attention. The fact that Toucher isn't really talking about it makes me wonder if something is really there (ie, it's not a bit).

No idea. I'm pretty sure they're cool with Felger and Mazz because they know it's not personal, just busting balls. While I'm sure they'll never be best buddies, I don't think they have an ongoing problem. He was pissed at Zolac last week but they cleared the air when Zo called into the show to explain what he meant.

My guess is that it is one of the producers or off-air guys. He may have wanted and was told that he was going to get the Bruin's Hour on Wednesdays and was screwed out of it somehow. That would make sense since he is a huge hockey guy and has been around longer than DA.

Had to drive out to meet someone this morning and caught T&R from 7:15 - 7:45. They spent most of the time talking about the MNF broadcast, playing clips of Gruden and inserting their own lines.

I was laughing so hard I was crying... and so were they. Mirrored the game thread on here:

"I think last night was the first time Gruden watched Favre without a box of Kleenex nearby"

"Gruden sounds like the sports anchor in Anchorman -- 'I miss your musk'"

"[after Gruden says Favre threw 5000 balls in practice] How many balls per second is that? I wonder if the ball just got up and threw itself? Did Favre throw it through hospital windows and cure people's cancer? I bet Favre was throwing passes out of Lambeau."

Check out the podcast if you can.

I heard this part. Wallach figured it out. Over a 3 hour practice, Favre was throwing 27 passes a minute.

Or, since they were replaying alot of this today. If Brett threw 5000 passes a day, without sleeping, it would be 3 a minute. Papelmate, perhaps you can add that to your next Favre post?

For all of you new listeners today was a classic Fred rant at a caller(at times they are also directed at managment). They are rare, but much like one night stand with no gag reflex they are always a pleasent surprise and you anxiously await the next one.

Oh also a quick dig today at D&C about them ranting about the NH murders, and how its basically pointless to even get upset since no one is going to disagree with you that the murders were bad.

Good for T&R:
QUOTE
So are some of the specific programs. The “Toucher and Rich’’ morning show, the only major refugee from WBCN, saw its ratings climb 45 percent among men 25-54 and 49 percent for 18-49-year-olds compared to the show’s July ratings at its previous home. And the drive-time “Felger and Massarotti’’ show earned a 4.4 rating among 25-to-54-year-olds, up from the 3.6 rating WBCN earned in the time slot in July.

When it hits the podcast, listen to T&R around the 735-745am mark. Fred went off on the types of callers he wants to get on 985 vs those that call WEEI and how the sports fans in this city need to lighten up.

Was the first rant I've heard him do, and I liked it.

About once a week, he pulls an absolute nutty, followed by about 3 seconds of silence, and him calmly introducing the next segment. It always breaks everyone up.

One of the funniest moments on the show when they were on BCN was Rich getting stuck in traffic because of news coverage of a car crash (the vans were taking up 2 lanes) and he was late. Fred started to give him crap, and Rich actually pulled a Toucheresque rant out of his ass that included him calling Fred a pussy, telling him that he gets to rant over stupid stuff and it was his turn, and to shut the f up because he's talked enough.

Instead of being a "Dad just hit Mommy at the dinner table" thing like when Fred goes off...it was like Mom crushed Dad's skull in with a cast iron.

The new "You just got Wallached" sound bite is absolutely hysterical. Also, Rich just made a great point, cutting off discussion of whether Varitek would have changed the outcome of the Sox series. Toucher and Wallach had started in on it and Rich jumped in telling them not to fall victim to the "fake sports take", something that's ultimately worthless but brought up just to have an opinion.

It's refreshing that these guys don't take themselves seriously.

I caught that "fake sports take" thing too, and you're right. The argument that the Sox might have won had Varitek started is so ridiculous and such a non-starter that it simply isn't even worth discussing. Similar to the "Should Drew Bledsoe have gone to the Superbowl parade" argument, it's silly.

I'm glad Rich cut it off. Very well done.

I am enjoying the show, but there was a bit of blatant racism early inthe broadcast when Rich was talking about his trip to the movies. I think there is some oversensitivity to racism, but this was pretty bad. Obviously they are just going for the pasty white sports fan that would normally listen to Callahan, so probably not a big deal, but I was actually pretty offended, mostly with him doing a "black voice" and for how long it went on.

I didn't think Gruden was being over the top at all.

You must have a program that alerts you anytime Favre's name in mentioned in a thread. I like it.

And I'm not sure if this is related or not, but ever since T&R started working the shock jock/sports angle, Opie and Anthony have really ramped up their sports talk. I mean, they used to *never* talk about sports and anything sporting related was rarely mentioned. In the past week, however, they have been all over the baseball play offs and have even recapped all the games the next day in detail. Anthony is even going to Yankee games. He doesn't leave his house. Ever.

It's in interesting coincidence, T&R have seen their ratings increase by 45% and all of a sudden O&A are delving deep into the sporting world. Frankly, it has made their show better, I've enjoyed it more, that's for sure.

Honest question, why would O+A care one bit about T+R? They're not even close to being competitors, and T+R is not exactly a national presence. I think it may just be a coincidence.

I agree. I know the T&R and O&A shows are all cool with each other and as close to "friends" as their situation allows, but I can't imagine T&R having an effect on O&A beyond possibly Opie saying "hey, what they're doing is kind of cool, I like it. Let's give it a try."

He was talking about people who give advice to the people in a movie at movie theaters. He mentioned that he went to the movies and the crowd there was black. He didn't say black, he said "the type to listen to DJ so-and-so's show" but it was obviously just a way to say that. Then he talked about how he would make a movie that was just a guy turning a jack in the box and what these people would all say, which I guess could have been funny if he didn't do it all in blatant "black-voice", go on for about a minute too long, and continually make reference to what type of audience it was.

I'm not sure they care about T&R and they aren't in competition with them, but they are friends and they used to work together. Opie has his finger on the pulse of radio, so it wouldn't be surprising to me if he was following T&R's success very closely, especially considering the Boston ties. And maybe Opie said, "Hey, we should talk about sports a little more, it seems to be working for them."

How is that out of the realm of possibility? Otherwise, it seems like a pretty random coincidence. O&A NEVER talked about sports. Now they cover sports every morning. That's a significant change.

Ok, that makes more sense. At first I thought you were saying O+A changed up their format due to T+R in order to compete or keep up with them. I'm not sure I agree with you, because I know O+A used to talk sports here and there and this seems somewhat coincidental, but at least I understand where you were coming from.

I'm more speculating than stating it as a fact. It is up in the air and I realize O&A talked about sports a little bit, but they are doing recaps every morning of all the games, football, baseball, basketball, and even hockey. That is a change. I like it, actually, it has made their show better.

Mayhaps that's why T&R are doing so well; sports talk with an added shock jock attitude on the side is a good combination.

They lost the phone connection with the gun shop guy, so Fred immediately took a caller who'd been on hold - an ex-con who was sitting on his toilet, who proceeded to propose to his girlfriend listening in the other room. What's so surreal about that? :)

Wow, that seems like a real stretch. What kind of "success" have T&R had? I seriously doubt O&A, a team who has had massive local and national syndication success are looking for broadcating tips from those guys. But I suppose anything is possible.

I tried listening to T&R again this morning. I just continue to not "get it". I think some of it has to do with my age (39) but I grew up a HUGE Howard Stern fan, so nothing is "beneath" me comedy wise. I'll probably try one more time and that will be that.

Yes, I get it. The problem was that he was making a "I am a dumb white guy imitating black people voice" over it and generally approaching it with the attitude that when white people do it it is a fun social phenomenon isolated to movies like Rocky Horror... but when black people do it they are ignorant and stupid and annoying. You can choose whether you find that offensive. I honestly don't care. I was surprised to hear it on the radio, especially in a town that doesn't need any help in having the world think it is racist, but that's just me.

I can't explain that. What really sucks about all this for me is that when Gerry Callahan talks sports - and nothing but sports - he's great. Yet that is so rare these days. Some how or other though he manages to mix his personal political views into everything sports related.

Great deal of speculation here, but this morning Crash revealed that he is working on his demo tape. So between that the constant jokes about his contract running out in the summer, and just overall wanting to kill Wallach I think the writting is on the wall. Too bad really, but he has his airtime significantly cut out from what it was on the other station. The stories that used to be his to fill in, are now sports talk. And eventhough Fred does seem to like to toss him a bone as much as he can, unfortunately Chris Crash Clark may as well put his house in quincy up for sale.

As Ilya mentions, that's just not his style. He takes a much more conversational and relaxed approach to interviews. As a result, his interviews are extremely hit or miss. If the guest buys in and has a good time with it, then they're outstanding. Aaron Ward, Shawn Thornton, Jack Edwards, and the recent Vince Vaughn interview are all good examples of that. The guest doesn't have to give the stock answers to the stock questions all the time, and the interview can go any which way.

However, if the guest is only conditioned to give his memorized answers that he's given every other radio station and is incapable of improvising and telling an interesting story, then it's going to suck. I can't think of any off the top of my head, but there have been times where the guest clearly becomes peeved that it's not a layup interview, and as a result, Fred and Rich decide to fuck with them and become dickheads on purpose. Not as entertaining, in my opinion.

Of course, you get both scenarios when Guy Fieri comes on and T+R start the interview trying to be dickheads and to fuck with him, but he just rolled right along with it and had fun with it and actually ended up winning them over. That was both extremely funny and entertaining to see the tables turned on them like that.
