I can't believe that anyone would think Fred is having personal issues or "bitched out" of going. I certainly wouldn't. Please dont read my posts above this one or I'll deny them.

Jim Gray was my first thought. That was quite a fiasco that apparently was much worse after the fact, I can easily see Gray having a tantrum if he ran into them down there

Zolak said last week that the whole Jim Gray blowup was because he thought T&R were Kirk and Callahan and he was on WEEI. This was after the whole Brady's kid comment from Reimer. Which makes a ton of sense considering his "this show has a shit reputation" comment. I have little doubt that Gray had no idea who T&R were. He was still a dick though.

Last year's Jim Gray interview was one of the best things I've ever heard on talk radio. I'd personally pay for Fred to fly down to Miami if they could talk to him again.

FWIW, local radio budgets must be tinier than I could have possibly imagined. One of the biggest stations in Boston can't afford roundtrip airfare to Miami, 3-4 nights at a hotel, and per diem? That's like $3,000 all in, I suspect.

I listened back to the Saved by the Bell hour and wonder how the hell Fred and Rich have inside sources close to Shannahan/49ers. Bizarre. It sounds like they were really confident on the Jimmy G stuff.

I didn't listen today for about 2 hours but Rich loves to make random shit up. "Tom Brady needs to be the highest paid QB in the league so I see him demanding a 2 year $71m agreement just because i think it"

It's no different than his other hot takes for the last 3 years

Gronk Will Be Back
AD to the Celtics
AD to the Celtics - Rose rule nonsense
Ted Johnson says Gronk would be back but BB is a big meany.
KAT to the Celtics, with no justification

I'd be willing to bet they have to pay for the space to broadcast from and the hourly or whatever fee for that. Plus production equipment, etc....

Isn't that infrastructure already there for Rich? He's on Radio Row and I imagine there's not a huge incremental production cost of having both of them there.

More ”talent” on site would mean more equipment, and more production staff needed. They’d probably have to pay for a bigger booth, too. Plus meals, hotel rooms, plane tickets, cab vouchers and various other incidentals all add up. And then there’s the issue of nagging Fred to go there (if he’s reluctant to travel if the Patriots/his favorite team aren’t playing).

I can see why it’s not worth it after a Mickey Mouse cost/benefit analysis.

I get it. So triple my estimate and call it a cool $10K for Fred to go. Still surprising to me that the most-listened to morning show in Boston can't monetize that.

They kept making reference to knowing someone close to the team/Jimmy and said the narrative about Shannahan ‘protecting’ Jimmy was BS based on their mutual friend. They also made reference later in the show about an inside team nickname implying Jimmy is stupid, but I wasn’t paying close attention during that hour.

I caught part of this. They call him Dirk Diggler. No, not because of THAT...but when he does something good in a game, he just be like..."Can we do it again?!?!" like Dirk said in Boogie Nights. They also sort of implied that the actual play called in is very very simple because he can't process it. So when he hits on something, he gets excited.

The Bob Fesco(sp?) segment from today was absolutely hilarious. Fred was gold calling in.

The Fescoe interview started strong but Fred blew the last two “calls”. It sounded like Fescoe had been really nice to Rich prior to the bit, so there wasn’t much edge to it.

“I don’t think our mountains are sassy” had me rolling.

So how was the show done this week? Was it Fred, John, and fill-in host with call-ins from Rich, or was it Fred, John, and Rich did the show as if he was in studio?

I really enjoyed the Carson Palmer interview this morning. He was much less wooden than I expected - confirmed some Mark Davis rumors - and had a good rapport with Fred.

Fred was out today, which is cool because everyone deserves sick days. However, he was pretty damn dark to open the show on Monday when complaining about weekends being miserable and his wife being a nag and I hope it’s not related. Normally there seems to be a lighthearted tact to his cynicism that makes it funny, but I wasn’t picking up on it in that segment. All that to say I hope everything is good with him.

He's missed a noticeable number of days and/or been late over the past year for being sick. Hope everything is ok.

Obviously, I have no intimate knowledge, so this is pure speculation. I don't think it was brought up in this thread, but a few months ago, Fred said that he was going to go a month (I think he specifically said 30 days) without drinking. They had a solid 15 minute discussion on when day "1" had been. He said he couldn't remember. He said he hadn't drank so far this week (I think it was on a Wednesday) but he was just going to go and say lets "I am at 5 now." He could not say whether he had a drink the previous weekend or not and kept deflecting it. Rich and Wallach really didn't press him much. I also remember him being out on that week's Monday show and Rich and Wallach were laughing at his "ria problem. But they also mentioned how it didn't seem to affect his drinking the day before...so it struck me as very odd that they did't bring up Sunday's drinking on Wednesday. When they came back from the break, there was no more discussion and I never heard about his sober month again.

I sometimes wonder what guys like T&R think about these podcasting networks being sold for huge money. Creating the exact same content is basically what they do all day. I wonder if Fred in particular feels stuck or like he’s kind of headed down a dead end in relation to his talent at making audio entertainment (which is significant IMO).

Of course there’s also the repetitiveness of the job, the burnout of talking about the same stuff every day, loss of caring about sports as you age, general middle-age questioning of your life choices, seasonal (weather) stuff, getting up stupid early and yeah, drinking makes mental health more complicated.

Anyway, that’s probably way too much to infer from random grouchiness or off days. But one of Fred’s best qualities is that he’s honest about stuff he’s feeling. The guys deserve all of their vacations and schedule leeway, keeping your head right is important.

Listened for a bit today - maybe Fred banged out yesterday because he couldn't bear to hash out ridiculous Brady scenarios with Rich all morning. The show is obviously at its best when they're both there, but that talk is painful. Rich is really bad at sports when there's nothing actually happening.

Fred basically admits to being a mostly-functioning alcoholic. From what he says he's routinely going to bars by himself all afternoon, would rather drink than do his kid's sports, he tried Sober January for the 5 days you talked about, complaints about how bloated he is all the time and other tidbits here and there. I'm not judging him, we all have our issues, but i wouldn't be surprised if alcohol significantly impacts his life negatively and he's getting older which isn't helping.

Fred digging his grave over the Rich and Wallach missing time comment was hilarious. I think he realized halfway through what he was saying how dumb it was.

Bird gets a lot of hate, but I lost it during his play by play attempt this morning. Swore on live TV within seconds and thought they could edit it from a LIVE broadcast, randomly gave up during sentences, etc. Way better than the artificial Adolpho ones over taped games

Caught a bit of this morning's discussion of the Red Sox ownership's press conference yesterday. They claimed to be utterly mystified by Werner's reference to 17 years of talent control. Let's see: 5 years before Verdugo hits free agency, 6 years before Downs hits free agency, and 6 years before Wong hits free agency. Not so hard, guys, to get to 17 years of service time.

Having said that, the show's "carnival barker" send-up of Sam Kennedy was largely entertaining.

I'm so tired of "Have you ever had this happed... call 617...….." every single time Rich is in the big chair without Fred. It's rarely humorous and just crappy radio... because I care about some random dude exaggerating a story about he quit some place.

I laugh every time it happens. It's his crutch. "has anyone worked a job where someone was mean to you? 617-931-0985!"

It happens at least 8 times a show when he's in the big chair.

I turned it on this morning just after 7AM and it was the first thing I heard him say.

Also, his interview with Ainge right now is cringe worthy.

Yeah the show has been pretty lame lately, this week in particular. Same stuff every day, speculation treated as news. Times like this I'd be ok with the guys taking some vacation time. Hopefully soon something actually interesting will happen

I do really like Ty though and enjoyed that segment, they should pivot back to more Bruins/C's talk instead of continuing to pound the Brady stuff into the ground.
