At some point the sports world's absolute fascination and devotion to gambling is going to stop, or at least slow down, right?

Because I honestly don't know anyone who likes it. At all.
Depends. Live broadcasts embedding gambling content is only going to increase. There is a ton of money to be made by the networks on that front, and money always wins.

Talk radio is a different animal. Obviously the books are there to stay in terms of being major sponsors. But a shows’s content will still likely largely be dictated by the hosts.

I’m less turned off by March Madness gambling talk than other stuff, because the whole reason MM is popular is because of gambling. Be it brackets or regular wagering.

Its the NFL and NBA gambling talk that bores me to tears.

At least Rich hasn't gotten to the point where he views everything from the perspective of his personal wagers. That's what happened to Big Cat - pretty much everything he talks about is just a reflection of his bets and it gets old very quickly. It always amused me coming from the guy who correctly pointed out that "nobody cares about your fantasy team". Gambling is definitely going to remain prominent on the show for sponsor reasons, but hopefully Rich finds the middle ground once the novelty wears off.
Was never a huge Barstool guy but when they pivoted to all things gambling they completely lost me. From the videos where they fake heartbreak when a team makes a play that causes them to lose their wager (genuinely curious if they even put their own money out there as well) to viewing every game purely in the optics of whether a team covered or not....no thanks, hard pass.

I have a feeling that you're right about live broadcasts especially as smaller, in-game bets become the norm.

What I don't really know is whether this is all generational. When a majority of us were kids and we got into sports, the third rail was always, "don't gamble on sports, don't even talk about gambling" (unless you're Jimmy the Greek). During the last five years, there has been such a 180 and it's so in our face, I wonder if our sports lizard brains are rejecting it due to the constant "no gambling" mantra? In 10-15 years, maybe gambling talk will just be part of the sports talk environment and old bastards like us will just have to grit our teeth and recall days when gambling was a death sentence.

That Kirby Smart thing about Bill likes DLs with big asses was posted a couple years ago. I think it was in a video where they were discussing an odd man front they run at uga that they call "mint". I know about this because I went to GT and let me tell you, Kirby is putting hard times on us daddy.

I think the recent gambling focus is the dot product of A) the novelty of it recently becoming available in the local market and B) the first few days of the NCAA tournament having so many games that the only way to comprehend what's going on is via spreadsheet, which happens to lend itself best to gambling. There's almost 500 players playing in each of the first two days of the NCAA. That might as well be pachinko. If it's just one game like the super bowl or one game per couple days like the ECF, you're going to be able to think more about the intricacies of the sport itself, like "what new crazy thing is Mahomes going to do?" or "how much help will JB need to defend Giannis?". (By the way, Swayman last night...hachi machi)

In my opinion, the gambling talk will cool off fast for this show especially. They have interests other than sports (Fred especially) and the desire to create content about these interests. I assume most would agree with me that the non-sports content in this show is more fun than the sports talk.

I'm not sure if it's generational, I think you're 5 or so years older than I am IIRC, but starting fantasy football in college, then into Daily Fantasy (which I never early got too into but tried it) to the legalization of gambling seems like a pretty natural progression. I do remember as a kid if you said Gambling it was followed by Pete Rose or with some shady guy on the corner taking illegal bets. I doubt people who are under 30 have any negative connection to gambling. Not to turn this into a gambling thread but at least in MA, the finger wagging on it yet there were Red Sox Scratch tickets, you can go play Keno for hours (where you're basically guaranteed to lose) were OK but sports gambling a big taboo.

To be clear, I'm not wagging my finger at gambling at all. Gambling (aside from entering an NCAA bracket or buying a few Super Bowl squares) isn't my thing, but I don't look down on folks who do it. Lots of people think my addiction to porcelain dolls is a waste of money, but I know it's not. I'm going to strike it rich some day and then I'll be the one laughing all the way to the bank. THE MONEY BANK!

Just keep tweeting at Ice Cube until he acknowledges it. Once he does, you're going to be rolling in it. Either that or those 3 storage units you have full of them are going to be a waste.

I enjoy hearing people talk about gambling as much as I enjoy hearing people talk about a poker tournament or their baseball card collection.

I enjoy doing all of these things myself. But I want to hear someone else talk about them like I want another hole in my head. I don't have a commute anymore so I don't listen to this, but it's instant station change for me.

DUDE! I had pocket kings and was all in, then this bro who had no business being in the hand with Ace / 3 hit the full house on the river! I can't believe it. Let me talk about this for 20 minutes when nobody cares! I've watched Rounders 100 times and it was just like at Teddy KGB's!!!!

So are we going to see the broadcasters themselves running real gambling of their own (not just contests). Instead of DraftKings, CBS has you go to CBSBetstore.com to sign up. I doubt it's legal right now, but how far off can it be? And then the leagues themselves will want to get in on it, because owners only want to make money. Bet on NFL games at the virtual NFLCasino! Real time betting on every single play.

I probably overbeat this horse, but I think Simmons and his Ringer crew handle the gambling stuff far better than Barstool and a lot of folks. It's pretty seamless in the weekly NFL pick the lines podcast in a non-annoying way. Similarly during the annual over/under NBA pod with Russillo and House. Overall I just find his contrived gambling content a lot less annoying than most of the alternatives while he's still getting the bag from FanDuel or whatever company annoys me with ads.

I haven’t read the Ringer in a long, long time. My post was how Simmons used to be, checks calendar, 20 years ago and how he’d pepper his stories with gambling tales of woe.

It was either him or “Rounders” that wasPatient X for the preponderance of boring gambling (and Vegas) tales.

* I should probably find a new go-to, this horse is dead.

Probably a different subject, but I’m curious to what extent sports entertainment (radio and podcast mainly) will rely on gambling integration moving forward? For example, barstool folks got paid by a casino and I’m sure that got a ton of people excited. While the Ringer was bought by Spotify, every other podcast ad is now basically gambling, so I imagine that pays the bills for them too. Rich and Fred seemed to think the new ad revenue would be huge in recent months, and Beasley was clearly being cheap as shit pre-legalization with an outrageously successful station. I can’t imagine what it was like at the competition.

I hope it’s still viable to talk sports in five years without it being mostly gambling, but I’m not sure where the industry is going in this new world.

"Fantasy" scores have become as much a part of the on-screen crawl and nearly as much a part of the overall conversation as actual game stuff. Not sure why gambling will be any different.

There has been a lot written in the last few years how a generation’s worth of legal gambling has financial crippled a ton of people, especially in England. And there are experts over there warning us that the same could happen here.

In fact, I believe that gambling site ads are going to be illegal on Premiere League jerseys.

Yesterday was painful. Rich talking about the bets he had placed for hours, followed by Bertrand and Hardy talking about the bets they had placed for hours. I find it hard to believe they were all that into gambling before last Friday and it sucks to think that advertisers like FanDuel and DraftKings throwing loads of cash their way now means they've gained a measure of editorial control over what the hosts are using as topics.
Entirely possible I'm on the fringe but I don't know anybody that gives a shit about being able to place a bet on an app.

Apologies but you are wrong. It's a major major thing. I've been betting on offshore apps for 20 years. They suck. No promos, terrible interface etc. Being able to have 6 apps on my phone and compare lines and promos is a wet dream. I have tons of friends who were casual bettors who are falling into the "free bet" wormhole which leads to...problems.

Having the ability to bet on an app is a feature worth tens of millions of dollars.

I do kind of feel bad this was the week Rich was alone. No one cares about NCAABB here, betting is the hot new thing...it's not his strong suit, especially alone.

Also the betting talk isn't going anywhere. The companies will be doing major pushes for the NBA and MLB to keep their momentum. It'll only increase, not decrease IMO

Fair enough, you're probably entirely correct.

I can remember maybe 15-20 years ago when offshore poker websites became a huge thing. People who actually knew how to play were making serious money playing in 5-10 lobbies at a time versus people who didn't know what they were doing but enjoyed the novelty of it and lost. Then the Feds blocked it.

As a bettor do you find the talk about over/unders, spreads, parlays, etc more compelling versus something like Tatum's woeful 3 point shooting of late?
Understand there's room for both topics, but curious if the betting talk is bringing in new listeners?

Just curious because it feels like it continues this way there will be non gambler listeners who will go elsewhere so there's some risk/ reward about the whole thing.

Ok I will adjust my take. The betting TALK will die down. But sponsors, "special guests " etc will continue. So it'll still be front and center.

Also if Fred was in this week T&R wouldn't have been as terrible, since Rich was leading the way.

I hate betting talk. It's like stock market, crypto, etc. We are all turds throwing darts at a board. "The bankroll boys" may have a tiny higher winning percentage than I do on the past 5 years, and I suck. The best bettors, you don't know about. Hell look at RJ Bell. All time scum bag loser but he's the mid day shows go to for betting.

I think the major push to talk is a fad and it'll fade into the background as it normalizes. There still be tons of sponsors, ads etc. But there are tons of "experts" out there who you can get picks from. You don't need to listen to TSH to get it.

But I doubt it's bringing in new listeners. I'm a casual to frequent bettor who listens to TSH daily and I couldn't tell you when "the bankroll boys " are on. No one will specifically call in to get their takes. They aren't that good

Yes. You could either email it or text it (can’t remember which) and they would play during the first half of the show. I had a longer commute at the time and they played it while I was in the car.

Crash was still on at the time because I remember one random one that made me laugh a bunch about how when he sat on the toilet his nuts bungee jumped into the water. For some reason that stuck with me.

I wonder if this will be a point of contention in their next contract negotiations. Rich clearly likes (for now) tossing a little money around on some games so I don't think HE minds it as much. But yes Fred has openly talked about, with Joe Murray there, how much he hates the betting talk.

It won't be like this in the doldrums of summer when the only thing to talk about is Mac Jones and the Red Sox entering their July series with the Orioles at 50-64. But I do think all these apps will have tons of marketing in place to keep betting front and center.

"Here are the updates brought to you by Fan Duel, who's best bet today is a 50% profit boost on the Red Sox money line!"

So glad Fred is almost all the way back. I heard about a trick Howard Stern does where I think he said he turns the gain and compression way up in his headphone monitor mix and it gets him to talk softer into the microphone and that doing this did wonders for his endurance. I'm sure Fred is already doing something like this for himself, but then again who even knows if Beasley has engineers around to set something like this up?

Is he ok?

I have not listened to this show in some time and i almost thought the hub hired Jerry Callahan he voice sounded so scruff this morning.

He sounds perfectly normal to me.
Last time i listened to the show it was when he melted down on air and they sent him home, which has to be a solid year plus now, he sounded like a completely different person on air today imo. Maybe the radio broadcast has a different sound to it then the twitch feed idk, but glad to hear he is doing better.

Back when Fred melted down his voice sounded way better than he did today - which is still much much better than he sounded two weeks ago. For the last few months he has been sick with some sort of laryngitis that thankfully isn't centered on his vocal cords. He also took up smoking during rehab and if he's still doing it I can't imagine it's helping things.

I think things got better today with Fred back after the obvious gambling infomercial from last week. 2 observations.During the bankroll boys segment last week Dan Roche asked if you could do player props during the NCAA tournament. When he was told you couldn't in Massachusetts, he suggested New Hampshire which quickly turned into a "don't do that from Rich"! The other was today when Fred said the bonus money they were advertising was only parlays (sucker bets) and he would never do that again with his own money and Rich quickly disagreed. This might be a great listen going forward, though you worry about Fred telling the truth

Did anyone catch the ending when Fred said to Ryan Johnston , " Get used to waking up early, it might happen for a long long time"? paraphrasing

So, how’s this work - if you know something does Fred prime not know it too? Odd that you, a layman, would know such a technical industry trick (and the quality of the station engineers) and he, a pro, wouldn’t.

I believe I heard Stern mention doing this when he went on Kimmel's show a few years ago. I took notice because probably everyone who has played electric guitar for more than 6 months would hear that and think "did someone say gain and compression?" It's not all that technical - it just means that you turn your own mic way up in your headphones (gain) so when you talk quietly you believe you're talking loud enough and don't strain, but then if you get excited and start yelling into the mic it temporarily turns your headphone volume down (compression) so it doesn't ruin your hearing.

In the Dorchester studio Fred complained all the time about not being able to get engineers to come in and fix basic things. I have my doubts that Fred could even change a lightbulb on his own.

Roche did a great job keeping Wallach from derailing the conversation about twitter AI in hour 1. I can't tell you how many times Fred would start up on something super interesting and Wallach would just abruptly change the subject and that was it. A few times I was listening to the podcast I actually said "God damn, shut up Wallach!" out loud.
