What am I missing here? Great great power but he’s a career.211 hitter who strikes out once every 2 1/2 at bats. I don’t get why this is going to suddenly make a lousy Yankees team a playoff team.
The Yankees really needed a big guy in the middle of the order who strikes out a lot. It really is just what they've been missing.

The more serious answer is just the same as the way Sox fans used to get all excited anytime they'd sign/trade for a big righty who'd abuse the Monster...Gallo will abuse the LL field they call RF at Yankee Stadium.

This is right on the heels of an awful trade for Clay Holmes.

Kind of a crazy strategy for the Yankees to go all in on this team that's 9 games back. I wonder if Cashman feels like he needs to do something to keep his job, future be damned.

The Yankees have a ridiculous glut of middle infield prospects between A, A+, and AA. Not surprised at all they dealt from that strength because by my eye there wasn't enough room to keep them all and let them advance naturally.

Anthony Volpe might be the best of them, his numbers are absurd this year.

Yup. Maybe it’s high time to accept some Rays wins and root for the A’s too.
I’ll root for Oakland but Tampa is right on our heels and the MFY are......not that. My hope is we win our games while the MFY beat Tampa. That way we gain ground on our closest competition while the MFY don’t gain any on us. We just need the A’s to handle their own shit.

Normally I'd agree, but they're only 3 games behind Oakland for the second WC spot and if they can pull their collective heads out there's still a lot of talent on this club.

Neither of those trades are really about this season IMO. They had too much system depth and lose guys every year in the rule 5, so they traded 10 guys for 3 in 3 deals this week.

Also Holmes has a couple really interesting facets if you dig down a bit, he gets more grounders than any righty in MLB and has been dominant against righties this year. His hard sinker is by far his best pitch, so maybe NY will just try to get him to pound the zone with that and mostly junk his other pitches. Still a long shot, but an interesting one.

Gallo is actually a pretty good defensive OF too, right? Certainly better than Andujar and Frazier.

I don’t know why everyone is so concerned about a Rays team that can’t hit. I don’t think they can hang with the Sox. But YMMV.

When I think of the Yankees problems with their current roster, I would not have picked Joey Gallo as the solution. He's better than all NYY outfielders other than Judge, but, here's his career line: .211/.336/.497. (If he morphs back to the stats he put up over 70 games in 2019, this will look like a much better deal for NYY.) After moving all of these prospects, do the Yankees have enough left for one or two additional impact moves? Because I think their lineup needs at least one more pitcher and at least one more impact hitter.

(He averages 110 hits, 92 walks, and 227 Ks per 162 games.)

Another Mendoza hitter, although with power. He won’t solve the MFY problems scoring runs. Great they begin to deplete their farm system, another decade of watching other teams taking the division. Fuck the MFY.

I know nothing about the Yankees’ prospects, but Passan’s sources apparently believe it is an excellent return. View attachment 43011
A bunch of top 30 (and a couple top 10ish) guys from the Yankees’ current system is a lot different than a quantity package from a lot of other systems.

And we’ve seen more than enough top-heavy deals that went nowhere for the team getting tip-top prospects.

They’re right behind us. This MFY team can’t hit either and they’re 9 back. Not to mention we’ve beaten them like a rented mule head to head so far. Our goal right now is winning the division and our biggest threat to that goal is Tampa.

And yet…and yet…I just can’t root for the Yankees to win. I just cannot get there.

Thats how I feel. Who scares you in that Rays lineup? Its mediocre crap from top to bottom. The Yankees have several players who can bust out of their slumps any day now.

The addition of Cruz and the potential breakout of Franco at some point could make them tough, especially with their strong pitching. I’d say both teams have some upside remaining.

If the Sox finish with the best record in the AL, they get the winner of the Wild Card game in the Division Series. I would want the easiest opponent. I guess it depends on who you think is the tougher opponent among Tampa, Oakland and NY.

They're 9 back with under 60 to go and are making moves for a one-game WC lotto pick and/or to save Cashman's job. TB is my chief concern bc it turns the RS into a one-game playoff lotto team.

Possibly against Gerrit Cole and the Yankees with a different-ish roster.

I live in the NYC area so I know the fans are putting on the pressure to get rid of Cashman if they miss the playoffs, but the Gallo trade seems like a great move for them regardless if they make the playoffs or not. They gave very little up for a guy who hits 40+ HR, is incredible defensively and is only 27 years old. Cashman is pretty good at pulling off heists but I didnt see this coming.

Absolutely! It concerns me anytime especially in baseball where my team is involved in a one-game playoff. Which is why I'm far more concerned today about TB right on the Sox's heels.

I was being tongue in cheek about the rest of my statement. Cashman did well to get a very good player for 1.25 years.

It’s not a “heist” because they gave up good value. Now maybe those prospects don’t pan out but it’s a fair trade.

I hate the Yankees as much as anyone but it’s just not accurate to say they “luck into” trades. They clearly have a really good scouting operation because they consistently find valuable prospects in ways other teams don’t as consistently. And their ability to get those prospects makes it that much easier to do trades like this when they want to.

Yep, their problem is in development.

Not one of the Yankees top 12 prospects are included. Rarely does "quantity" vs "quality" in a trade lead to securing a future impact player.

I'm more shocked that Gallo is still only making $2M/yr. He's been in MLB since 2015. Cashman is a genus if he gets a power hitting left-handed bat and Yankees stay under the MLB salary cap this year.

Gallo is making $6.2M this year. $2.1M is just the Yankees’ pro-rated portion, I believe.

This is not at all accurate. At least two of those guys are top 10 picks. For example, BA will have Duran at #6 and Smith at #8 in its forthcoming mid season update.

You can’t rely on pre-season top prospects lists, especially when those guys hadn’t played pro baseball in over a year thanks to the pandemic.

This is mlb.com latest update of Yankees top prospects. Its dated July 25, 2021 and claims to have updates on Yankee prospects. It only doesn't included their recent draft picks. Smith ranked 14th and Duran 15th.

Even if somehow they've become 6th and 8th ranked(middle infielders not even top line pitchers), this is all it cost to secure a proven 40 HR power left handed hitter made for Yankee Stadium? Even more amazing is fact Gallo only makes $2M rest of this season and not free agrent until after 2022 season,

There is a reason why when the scouts show up for early work all the Yankees minor leaguers had names on the back of the jerseys. Scouts wanted to see who they were looking at. Let's see how this looks down the road.

If Cole pitches and wins the play in game, you only see him once in the first round unless they pitch him on short rest.

Plus, we knocked Cole out in the fifth last time we faced him. I'm curiously unworried about the Yankees.

I'm starting to get overconfident, to my own shock. This pleasant surprise of a season won't be as much fun if I start expecting to win. <Grumble>
