Trade deadline

I'm just not feeling a massive add here. Ownership brought Bloom in for a reason, and pressuring him to be something he is not doesnt seem like it would end well.

Still say bullpen and 1B is as far as he goes, but maybe I will be shocked.
I interpreted the story differently. Chaim had a plan coming into the season. Due to play on the field, he is likely shifting gears more to a GFIN strategy. My take is that Bloom might want to deal for Scherzer, but that is a big departure from the plan....and ownership is pushing him to go ahead and do it.

This is what I would like to believe anyway. I do not see a scenario where Henry or the like tell Chaim to "go get player x".

Either way, Chaim has done a tremendous job keeping the lid on whatever they are working on.

Sure, guys get held out or pulled out when there's a trade imminent. But if nothing's imminent, or at least if the Nats don't feel like there's anything imminent, why should they hold him out of what is his normal day of work? Particularly if they've got a double header and they're already having to come up with one extra starter for the day.
Because the deadline is only a few days away and something could materialize at any moment. If it doesn't, just start him after the deadline.

I’m starting to get a little nervous - only a little over one day left to the deadline and teams know we’re DESPERATE for a first baseman. Hopefully whoever plays 1B tonight (probably Dalbec) hits 4 dingers and the desperation doesn’t look quite as bad

Might be an outlier but he's got a 4.3 WAR, 869OPS, truly a stud defender with a cannon, OPS+ 138. What's the line between good, very good, and great?

Will he change the offense? I don't think he can do it alone. In recent Yankees fashion, I fully expect him to go on the IL a week after he gets here.
A full 1.0 BWAR higher than Judge, who I know has missed a lot of games. A good deal of defensive WAR (1.1) for Gallo contributing to the overall. Nothing wrong with that.

Scherzer will NOT accept a trade to Houston or Philly per ESPN.

Looks like it’s the three NL West teams and us, unless I’m missing someone. I mean there’s no way he’d actually want to pitch in Tampa, right? I bet players are pretty sick of playing without fans.

So, Scherzer for .5 years or Berrios for 1.5?

By FIP they aren't that different this year (3.47 for Scherzer versus 3.57 for Berrios). Add in the fact that Berrios is 10 years younger, I think maybe advantage Berrios.
Almost certainly an extension involved. Pretty sure Boras was quoted a week or so ago that the acquiring team would be expected to, or something to that effect. Shouldn’t be a problem for us but I’m sure there’s a limit to how much he can say pre-trade.

I still think if he can be had for the right price, Scherzer makes the most sense. Adding him as one of 3-4 starters you will use in the postseason IMO has more impact than adding any bat that is left out there right now - unless Trea Turner or Jose Ramirez really are available. Get Scherzer. Get Rizzo, who really should not have a significant cost.

Well, I think they might be desperate, but they can also tell teams trying to rip them off "Well, we are on a 100 win pace now...we don't *have* to do anything."

He obviously doesn't want to go to New York. I do wonder besides them being a 1st place team what intrigues Scherzer about Boston. Is he close with players on the team? Does he have interest in signing here in FA and wants to get a taste of Boston?
Well he was on the Tigers in the 2013 ALCS and got a taste of what Fenway is like in the postseason. Maybe he found it agreeable? Or maybe pitching for this team is a good way to set himself up for his next contract?

Obviously, for THIS year, Scherzer would be an immense addition. If somehow they could Go For It (TM) and add Scherzer, Rizzo, and Kimbrel, this team would be unreal. But they'd pay a TON for all that, and it would set future years back considerably. But holy smokes wouldn't that be something for this year.

Can Schwarber play first? Does Casas/Downs/+ start a conversation on Schwarber and Scherzer?
Is that enough Sch names to make it look wrong when you're typing it? Yes it is.

Probably but I'm not sure I'd rather not move on from Casas for a rental. I'd be fine with one of Downs and Gilberto or maybe even both.

The Red Sox don't do that deal. Casas alone is worth more than Scherzer and Schwarber, let alone Downs and *plus*.

(About twice as much, per the baseball trade simulator.)

I don't think acquiring Scherzer is as binary a GFIN/Build for the Future move as it might seem. You're only guaranteed .5 years of Scherzer, so the return the Nationals get is not going to be huge. A top 100 prospect (maybe someone like Jeter Downs) and a few low minors guys seems like the appropriate return. The idea that you'd have to give up multiple significant pieces seems not to track with the recent history of these types of deals (there's a Ringer article about this right now, in fact).

How much would they really have to pay for two months of a very good 37-year old pitcher who has a no-trade clause in his contract? It's not exactly trading for prime Chris Sale with three years left on his contract.

You add in other dudes like Schwarber and the price starts to climb somewhat, but I'd be kinda shocked if a prospect like Casas had to be included. Incredibly shocked really, and I don't think the Sox would do that even if the bidding process got to that point. You have to imagine that if they were willing to deal him for Scherzer and/or Schwarber, they would've been happy to make him the centerpiece of a package for Gallo.

Don't overestimate the actual cost of players on expiring contracts, no matter how good they are. The Nationals are price-takers here, practically anything they get for Scherzer is a net gain for them, it's only a matter of what teams Scherzer is willing to go to and what those teams are willing to offer.

Even more reason to prefer Berrios.

Schwarber is another guy who could hit 30+ homers in the remaining games at the toilet this year for the Yanks

I wonder if Scherzer's defferred money works out better because of the AAV implications? Can the Sox take that on without counting as payroll against the CBT, effectively buying out a higher prospect obligation? I have no idea how it might work, but seems convoluted enough...

On the 1B front, can/ will Bryant play 1B? I'd rather his bat and positional flexibility than Rizzo, but wouldn't want to move Devers off 3B for a rental player...

Unless we could extend Max, I'd be fine with Berrios. He's looking for an extension as well, but will be more cheaper AAV'ish. He's not a Hall of famer, but he can put in alot of good production for years to come. Situations for cheap cost controlled #2-3 pitchers dont come along often.

FWIW, Downs fell off BA's top 100 list all together. I doubt he'll be on any at season's end. There are all kinds of reasons for his struggles, but those struggles hurt his prospect ranking and trade value. He hasn't been just "bad" in AAA. He's hitting .197/.272/.313 and striking out 32.2% of the time. I'm not even sure where Downs would rank internally, tbh.

It's very concerning that Downs has hit that bad at AAA considering Polar Park is very, very hitter friendly.

We are not trading Casas, especially with Dalbec struggling. He's our 1st baseman of the future and is holding his own pretty well as a 21 year old in AA (113 wRC+). That is not a move that Bloom would make.

Didn't realize Downs had cratered that badly. Yikes. I think the larger point still stands, though I guess that puts the Sox at a disadvantage given that our top 100 guys are not prospects anyone is all that excited to deal.

Yeah, that would be like trading Anthony Rizzo just to GFIN. Sox would never do something like that.

I mean, Rizzo and Scherzer would be mighty delicious ....I don't think they need both a starter AND a reliever ... cuz whatever they get, that likely determines Houck's role going forward ...

I think it's quite possible Sox could pull this off ....

I think to the right team, there are guys outside the top 100 that would have some appeal. Pedro Castellanos (as much as I'd hate him traded) is finally hitting for power, has good contact skills, doesn't strike out much. Kutter Crawford is having a very interesting year. Josh Winckowski. Brandon Howlett. There's a lot of depth and interesting pieces.

I'd be more willing to move Gilberto more than most too.

They’re almost certainly not gonna trade Casas, so where are all the assets for these huge acquisitions coming from?

Forget those shortages of toilet paper and disinfectant wipes - there wouldn't be a bottle of Tylenol or Advil to be found in New England for six months if the Sox ever reacquired Craig Kimbrel.

More like pepto and Zantac, unless you think everyone will need something to control their Kimbrel Fever.
