It’s gonna be hard to move that contract when Mac wins the starting job.

Ties Burrow for highest paid QB (aav) in the league.

I think the top 5 are Burrow, Lawrence, Herbert, Lamar and Goff. (Not in order )

Seeing their backup quarterback in action just made them realize how ugly things could get if they weren't able to sign Trevor.

Yes. What does that mean?
So fully guaranteed is just that... the minute he signs they are locked into it.
Other guarantees can vary, based on injury, skill, etc. But usually they are amounts that become fully guaranteed if the player is on the roster on a certain date. (so for example, he might get a certain amount of money in 2025 or 2026 guaranteed if he's on the roster on the last day of the league year or first day, etc. etc.)

Dak broke his fucking leg and JJ still was worse off for not paying him early. Lawrence needs to grow into this contract, but locking him up now was absolutely the right choice.

The cap went up $30m this year and is up $70m since 2018. And this is an extension so it doesn't even kick in until the 2025-26 season. Lawrence is good with lots of additional upside if they can keep him upright.

I mean, you gotta pay him if you're the Jags, but man is that a lot of money for some pretty middle of the road production.
Yeah, but his rookie year was with Urban Meyer, and fuck that guy--in the minds of many he's only had 2 seasons under legit NFL coaching.

Another reason that I’m glad that Belichick is out. He would never pay a young quarterback that kind of money.
BB had no issues giving out top of market deals. He gave Bledsoe the largest contract in NFL history at the time. Made Mankins the highest paid guard, Wilfork and Hernandez got market setting extensions at their respective positions. He made Brady the highest paid player in the league (2013).

Would he have paid Lawrence specifically? Not sure given Lawrence’s career thus far. But given how much BB invested in the QB position during his tenure and his willingness to pay guys he thought were critical to the team’s success, I don’t think it would have been an issue.

How many players did BB not re-sign for being too expensive where that guy ended up being worth the money? Asante Samuel is the only obvious one. Seymour was clearly worth it but I don’t think they could have retained both Seymour and Wilfork simultaneously.

Is this more of the Jags had to do this than they wanted to do this? Lawrence was 17th in QBR in 2023, PFF had him 11th in EPA per play. They haven't surrounded him with the greatest situation but he was supposed to be transcendent. Is he a top ten QB? It's debatable.

I dont think they have a problem with it. He was a bit hurt last year and is extremely popular with Jags fans. I was at Tampa when he played on Christmas and got in the stadium as soon as it opened and was at the Jags tunnel. The fans love this kid and he is personable with them.

I don't disagree overall but this is what you pay quality starting QBs when their deals are up. Look at what Goff got. This is the market.

Lawrence had top ten numbers his second year (#8 in ANY/Att) and was fighting injuries last year, he's borderline top ten today and as noted his first year had a shitshow of a coach and he's just 24 (A year older than say Jayden Daniels). He has the size and from everything we hear the intangibles you want, he's a slam dunk to lock up and it's silly to suggest otherwise.

You pay a QB for their future production rather than past. Dinging Lawrence for having had "middle of the road" production is besides the point. He's shown plenty to indicate that he'll be a top 10 or better QB going forward, which makes this a no-brainer.

The only way paying Lawrence wouldn’t have been a no-brainer would have been if the Jags were in a Bears type situation (1st overall pick with a prospect like Caleb Williams). That might have presented something of a debate internally for them

The chances they can find a guy better than Lawrence are a lot less than the chances that they can win with Lawrence. Will he ever be a top 5 QB? Possibly (probably?) not. But he’s a top half of the league, probably a bottom of the top 10 (8th-10th) type QB most years of this contract. You have to pay him and hope for the best.
