In what world does this occur this late in the off-season?

I’m assuming they just couldn’t get him to respond to rehab.

If I hear that Story fell off his bicycle, I'm gonna lose it.

Actually, pretty good chance I'm losing it regardless.

But I thought all our health problems would be magically resolved this season! Next you'll tell me that Sale and Paxton might not be good for the full season...

Well, shit. This makes the supposed lack of interest in a guy like Segura even more puzzling.

So right now for 2b/ss we’ve got….Arroyo?

And Kike.

I'll reserve judgment on the "lack of interest" in other middle infielders until we learn why the surgery was performed yesterday. It's entirely possible this came out of nowhere.

I don't like to be pessimistic but feels like they botched the timing of this like with Sale's TJ. I doubt Chaim is going to reveal anything an hour from now that this is new.

Better now than April 10th. Still a tough blow and quite puzzling. Maybe Story was having symptoms that he wasn't bringing up? He seemed happy with the elbow in his conversation with Bradford at the end of the season. Can only figure he aggravated it ramping up for the season.

Not a doctor, but I believe Andrelton Simmons and Mike Trout had the same procedure on the thumbs on their non-throwing hand in 2016 and 2017, respectively, with the same physician. Simmons missed five weeks, Trout missed six.

I assume the rehab on a throwing elbow is longer, although perhaps he could come back earlier solely as a DH. At worst, assuming no issues with rehab, he should be back in the field between Memorial Day and the All-Star break.

What a shock. The guy with "elbow inflammation" who lost the ability to throw actually had UCL damage.

You don't need to be a doctor to know that thumbs and elbows are different body parts.

Knowing when an injury is going to respond to rest and rehab, which is always preferred to surgery, is by no means an exact science.

You can’t force someone to have a procedure, but what an incredible misstep in decision making.

Could have had this behind him by opening day.
Well we don't know how this has gone down, so we don't know that it's a misstep at all. Maybe the docs said he has an 80% chance of being just fine with rest, and generally speaking you'd rather heal by rest than have surgery. But maybe that 20% showed up and he needed surgery after all.

We have no idea.

FWIW, Lou Merloni weighs in on the timing...

View: https://twitter.com/LouMerloni/status/1612903738213302272

"He’s not throwing a baseball in October, November and most of December. After a few weeks of throwing, elbow starts barking. You get it checked out. It’s very common when it comes to timing. You don’t feel it until you start ramping it up."
and calls out Bob
This is hard to believe. If you know you need surgery, you don’t hope. If you have a little pain you hope it goes away with rest. Not surgery.

Another day in the Lab, another bat personalized from knob to barrel. Big things coming for @Tstory2

Was working out during the last week in Dec

Yeah it's not like they can't do they math and figure out surgery in November is better than surgery now. We'll see the details but I'm sure there's a reason for the timing.

Only to someone who's never played baseball and/or never had to ramp up for a sports season.
This has been an issue for multiple years apparently and this team was effectively eliminated in late August / early September. Now our only middle infielders are Christian Arroyo (who hasn't played in more than 87 games since 2017) and Kike (who is going to get awfully tired manning both Shortstop and Center Field).

Look, I get it, players get injured and I'm frustrated. But on the surface this appears to be another failure, this time by the medical staff. Now we just wait to see how they respond knowing they need two middle infielders instead of one.

Literally nobody has ever said that Story's elbow was all better. There is zero correlation between one guy with an existing condition and other people's bodies which had injuries which have since healed, apart from your desire to freak out about all of them.

How does being "quite aware of needing surgery" square with "hoping to not have surgery?"

Bob's not saying much here, but what it sounds like he might be saying is a bigger deal. I wish tweets like this were more clear.
yeah, I would guess that the real story there is....
he was aware he MIGHT need surgery, but hoped several months of rest would prevent the need.

How is it the medical staff failing? They can't force him to get surgery, nor honestly, can they really tell what a couple months of rest will result in. This is the pattern with these types of injuries in all sports, nobody WANTS to have surgery, so if it's borderline they almost always see if rest and rehab can fix things, then they ramp up and if the problem returns... surgery time.

Are you suggesting limited-characters tweets are a poor means of communication?

For all we know, Story tried some PRP or other treatment that didn't pay off.

Does this open the door to Duran playing some 2B?

I mean literally all he has to do to make that make sense is say "might" need surgery instead of "would" need surgery.

Story was quite aware that he would might need elbow surgery in the off-season, one of of his Boston #RedSox teammates said, but was hoping that he could avoid it with rest.
Would think Valdez is more likely, or even Rafaela, but who knows.

Yorke at 2B and Rafaela at SS? and Arroyo backing up both?

Or Yorke at 2B and Arroyo at SS?

or Arroyo at 2B and Rafaela at SS?

Probably can't trade Rafaela now for non-Ace pitching. For MIF sure.

Or Enrique in MIF somewhere and Duran (or Rafaela) in CF?

Price for Andrus and whatever else there is on the market just went up.

By "botched" you mean they knew what to do but for some reason decided not to do it? Do people really think these guys are all that out to lunch? It's an injured body part, it's far more likely they wanted to see if there was a less invasive alternative to surgery that would work. We see this in sports all the time; don't get surgery unless you have to. If you mean they made a bad bet on him healing, maybe, but I wouldn't assume much without being in the room with the doctor and hearing what s/he had to say. They certainly gambled and lost, but they may have had good reasons to be optimistic. Or maybe they told Story, it's your body, we can't order you to get surgery, and he wanted to wait and see.

Admittedly I'm speculating here, but I recall (and linked below) a situation where the medical staff suggested surgery for Schilling and he wanted to rehab. It's entirely possible that the same happened with Story. In which case, consider this my apology to the medical staff. Assuming however that this isn't the case and the path chosen was the incorrect path, then I would be appropriate in criticizing the medical staff.

Can't you say that about, like... any possible scenario?

"If I'm right, then this looks bad. If I'm wrong, which is certainly possible, then this doesn't look bad."

Doesn't seem like this line of reasoning goes anywhere other than getting mad for no reason.
