Love it. Casas has nothing left to outright prove in AAA and they have a need. I hope this means he’ll be getting consistent ABs.

Edit: Dalbec down is interesting.

I guess they prefer Dalbec getting regular at-bats in AAA than have him sitting the rest of the year

It was either Dalbec or Cordero. Thought it might be Franchy because left-handedness and Dalbec's ability to play elsewhere in the infield, but that usefulness is really redundant as long as Kike' and Arroyo are healthy

I love this move. If nothing else, a month of MLB ABs should help inform Casas's training in the offseason. German next! Get them all up.

Seems like a platoon with Arroyo at 1B is a potential plan. Arroyo can still spell X/Story against righties at times.

Probably the way they'll go, given Casas's troubles against lefties. Heaven forbid they get them both in there by spelling JD
Also, Hosmer's back has got to be really bad

If they feel that Arroyo can handle 1b on occasion and especially against lefties then Bobby will be wearing a new uniform next year. Not sure if it will me a MLB or MiLB uni.

Not sure why they couldn’t have just waived Plawecki.
I would love to see Wong and McGuire get all the catcher ABs for the rest of the season, and would expect that either way this month marks the end of the Plawecki era..

Think there is a good chance Arroyo is the starting 2b next season..

As much as I like Arroyo, I think there's a zero chance you go into any season with him penciled in as a starter. He can't stay on the field.
If the Sox can resign Kike and sign Nimmo in the off-season, Kike’s positional flexibility is good protection against injuries across the Diamond.

Let's all keep in mind our exuberance with Duran being promoted in 2021. Some of us, like Casas now, felt Duran should have been promoted weeks earlier. I hope Casas catches fire, but he could also hit .200 with 35% Ks. I think he'll be okay, maybe .270/.340/.400.

What was Pedroia’s first 300 AB’s? Just don’t expect much right now. Gap between AAA and ML is pretty great. Preaching patience

Very encouraged by Story's work at the plate yesterday. Not jumping out of his shoes to pound the ball but showing a controlled stroke and hitting the ball hard to all fields.

No day on the bench for Casas to acclimate to MLB?

How many players have made their MLB debuts this season for the Red Sox? Bello, Downs, Winckowski and Kelly...anyone else? And if that seems like a lot, it's actually one of the lowest number of MLB debuts in either league with only the Dodgers having fewer debuts.

As for Dalbec, it must be extremely painful to head back to AAA after appearing in over 260 games over three seasons. I hope he can work out his approach to hitting. Remember, Mo Vaughn was sent back to AAA for a while after appearing in about 75 games for the Red Sox. (Looking back, Mo had a .260 BA in that MLB stint.)

Hoping that Casas takes after Lou Merloni and Daniel Nava, both of whom homered in their first MLB plate appearances, a 3 run HR and a grand slam respectively.

But, is Casas ready? Glad to see them make this move and let him get his feet wet over the final month in some relatively low pressure situation. Worst case, he struggles and learns from it and the org learns a little bit more about him. Best case, he plays well, the team wins down the stretch and everyone feels good heading into the off-season.

Also in 1B world, Keith Hernandez had a similar start. Highly regarded. Cup of coffee in '74. Opening Day starter in '75. Sent back to AAA hitting about .200. Raked in AAA. Returned to majors in September, where he hit 350. Never went back.

What does “being ready” even mean? Never struggle? Immediately be an .850 OPS hitter with 25 HR’s??? Great defense?
Depends what the expectations are…. Right now I think it’s experience against ML pitchers and the culture. Perfect time to let him struggle.
I just want him to be better than Dalbec for the last month.

Thing is... Keith Hernandez was 21 in 1975. Mo Vaughn was a little older, 24 when he was sent back to Pawtucket. Bobby D is 27. Would love for him to work something out, but his age makes the future expectations a whole different proposition.

The highlighted will likely answer your question.

Miami (oh, Miami!)

From my end, none. I mean, it hasn't been brought up to me. He hasn't played this year. He didn't play last year. That's the way I see it. He's still developing. That's my opinion. He needs to get his reps, keep getting his reps, and keep getting better. He was off for three months. So I think that's part of the equation. We haven't talked about that recently. It just felt like, Franchy has been swinging the bat well, just see how it goes this week. Hopefully we can get [Hosmer] as soon as possible.

I'm always reminded of Dewey flipping the switch as like a 28yo in the majors. Much higher starting point than Bobby obviously and excellent fielder as well, but he took it to another level in '81 and carried it through a second prime at the plate. Bobby has tools, but he just hasn't put it together. Pulling for him.

Triston Casas born January 15, 2000, younger than Bello and unless I'm forgetting someone, the first player born in the 2000s to play for the Red Sox.

Future Oriole Hall of Famer Gunnar Henderson hit a home run in his first major league AB earlier this week. I expect nothing less from Casas.
I have seen this reported multiple times and it isn't true. He popped in his first AB - into a double play. He homered in his second AB.

I mean, who really cares? But it's weird how often this has been incorrectly reported.

B-R Game Log of his first game.

No doubt there are significant differences, and in any case, the exceptions sort of prove the rule.. Ultimately, I dont think Dalbec is long for this organization.

Boy, what an impact Hosmer had for the 3 weeks he was healthy. Not saying it was a bad trade, since they got him for nothing, but he had a very short shelf life.

As ready as he's going to get without seeing MLB pitching. He has close to a 1.000 OPS vs R and is striking out less than 17% of the time. All his issues are vs lefties. And there just isn't enough PA to go around vs L.

On a side note: I wonder if Pedro Castellanos could possibly be the back up 1b next year at some point. He or Dalbec fits better than Hosmer. I guess it's a matter of whether someone prefers contact over power. Pedro has plus raw power and has tapped into some of that in recent years, though. Probably less in game power than you want from a 1b, but has decent enough contact skills and it would be a back up role. He's been a binky of mine since 2017, so I've followed him relatively close. He played the OF all of last year and about a third of the time this year to expand his versatility and possibly find him a role in the majors.

The scouting reports haven't matched the results. He's supposed to be a big K% guy but he hasn't been. He's supposed to have below average contact skills but he's a career .300 hitter. At the very least, I'm guessing he'll get a cup of coffee.
