Two Computer Dual Monitor Setup?

I'm hoping to start working from home more often, and part of that process will be picking up a second 23" ViewSonic IPS LED monitor (I have two external monitors at my office and I've found that I rely on them too much now to make it work with one external and a tiny laptop screen at home).  I also have a home PC that, while we don't necessarily use that often, I'd really prefer if we didn't have to crawl under the desk and plug/unplug the HDMI cable every time I switched to my work laptop.

I know that I can get an HDMI switch that would solve this problem; but I'm unsure if it would cause an issue with either computer recognizing dual monitors and extending my display accordingly?  For example, with that switch I linked, if I plugged my laptop into inputs 1 & 2 (1 direct HDMI, 1 with a mini-DP/HDMI converter) would the laptop be able to "look-through" the switch and recognize it's hooked up to dual monitors and extend my display?  Is there any potential for issues with the resolution if the laptop isn't hooked up directly to the monitors?

Now, I think I can achieve the same result by connecting them as follows:
- Monitor 1:  HDMI to laptop, DVI to desktop
- Monitor 2:  HDMI to desktop, DVI to laptop (through mini-DP/DVI converter)

That method, while free, requires using the monitors' onboard menu controls to switch between the HDMI and DVI inputs, which is really just a pain.  So if I can get a switch that will support the dual displays for under $100 (and would let me both control the input selection instantly with a remote, as well as hook up additional HDMI devices like an Xbox or w/e in the future) then I wouldn't be opposed to spending the cash.  But none of that matters if the switch will fuck with my ability to correctly extend my display across the dual external screens.

Anyways - didn't have any luck searching online whether the HDMI switch will cause dual display issues, so figured I'd try asking here.

Thanks in advance.

Good KVMs should accommodate for multiple monitors.  You're probably looking at DVI rather than HDMI though.

Also google "Synergy" - if anything it might get the brain juices flowing with some other ideas.

keep one thing in mind: Win 7 and above will adjust gracefully to what it sees connected when it boots automatically. Not so much if you boot and then switch the configuration, and with the laptop this means boot , not hibernation or sleep.  Otherwise at a minimum you're going to be clicking on a blank area of the desktop and rearranging which is #1 and #2 pretty often.

Since I can't seem to find a KVM switch that supports DVI dual-monitors for under $200; I'm guessing that a simple HDMI switch would not be an acceptable workaround then? Funnily, I really don't care about the peripherals - I have a wireless keyboard/mouse now that I can switch easily enough by moving the USB dongle from one of the front-facing ports on the deskotp to my laptop that it doesn't really bother me.  I really only care about not having to plug and unplug the video cables.

Looks like I'm stuck with just using the monitors' separate HDMI & DVI ports to switch back and forth, or drop $300 on the right (unnecessary) equipment because I'm lazy and a bit of a gadget hoarder.
