Was great in 01, below average every other year. 28. 2 GG’s. Intriguing, I think. Estimated $5.5m arb.

I would have rather gotten Carlson or Burleson if trading with the Cards, but potentially just a minor acquisition cost going this way.

Three things I know about Tyler O'Neill:

Canadian.* Light hitting. Good glove.

*Probably the fourth or fifth most famous athlete from Burnaby.

Nice buy-low. STL had to get rid of him. Like it a lot better than signing Whit M

He hit LHP pretty well last year, so there's a clear fit with this team as currently constructed

Look like he's been injured quite a bit the past couple of years. Presumably this is the righty OF acquisition -- so no Tesoacr Hernandez or Lourdes Gurriel. Which I guess means more $$ to spend on Yamamoto?

Haven't watched him much but the statistics look like an average hitter with above average defense, who once spiked a killer BABIP fueled year. Seems like a pretty good 4th OF, but maybe a little redundant to Refsynder, who I have a soft spot for.

I think this is fine as a replacement for Refsnyder as the 4th OF, *maybe* 5th. That's about all I'd want on a contender's roster though... assuming they are contending.

Still in his prime (turns 29 in June) and is 3rd year arbitration eligible who can't be a free agent until 2025. Made just under $5 million last season. His most similar comparison according to Baseball Reference is old friend Wily Mo Pena. Has a little bit of speed as well (40 career steals)

He has 5 years of service time, he's a FA next fall. (BBRefs' listing of when they're a FA is a bit wonky.)

Not a needle mover but a decent depth after losing Dugie. Must mean we are going all-in on a couple of pitchers.

Tweet from Eno Sarris/The Athletic:

I like Tyler O'Neill as a player, think he can do well in Boston. He runs fast, hits ball hard, has a cannon. The only thing... he's said multiple x to me that he wants to let the ball travel, he keeps pulling fewer fly balls. Yes, K% might go up, but what if he pulled flies?

This acquisition, I'm assuming, precludes them from re-signing Duvall and/or Justin Turner and also makes Refsnyder obsolete?
I wouldn’t say so. Refsnyder’s good for his cost and doesn’t really have trade value.

I’d think it’s likelier that Duran or Rafaela could be moved.

WTF for? We have guys in the minors we could put up for that. Makin the big moves.
But that's betting on a minor leaguer to be even able to play in the majors. This is betting on a proven MLB who could possibly get close to his '21 numbers

He’s a pretty big malcontent. Living in STL, he had a pretty poor reputation. Hopefully change of scenery helps.
Eh, STL was a tire fire last year and I don't really trust the coach there to keep players happy. I'm willing to roll the dice that Cora may be better at that element of this.

Now he's injury prone, that's a problem, but not getting along with Marmol might be a feature not a bug

As of now, isn’t this just a Verdugo replacement? Saves them a little cash. Obviously subject to change depending on what other moves they make but I don’t think this bumps any of their OF of the roster yet.

Can we stop making really stupid post on the main board?

This is a hitter who profiles perfectly in Fenway, can play above average at all three outfield positions, is right handed.

Please name the minor leaguer whois Currently under control who fits that description even a little? I’ll wait.

My first thought was also that I think Duran isn’t long for the team

So who goes to STL?
From the article linked by chrisfont9 above:

The Cardinals have been seeking bullpen help on the trade market, and it stands to reason that even one year of O’Neill could land them that. Goold notes that they’re also open to packaging him in a larger deal to acquire a front-end rotation upgrade, though such a deal would be far harder to orchestrate. Excellent as O’Neill was in 2021, that was two years ago, and he’s now a one-year bounceback rental. He wouldn’t be a prominent factor in any package for a high-end starter.

More like a platoon with Abreu than a straight Verdugo replacement, I would think.

That said, this dude has MASSIVE biceps. Like, the size of my waist, and I am fat.

He's a talented player when he is putting it all together. Here's hoping the player's manager Cora can get the best out of him.

A season like 2021 and he may end up being worth giving a QO too, as well.

They get the 2023 version and it's totally meh.

They get anything even close to the 2021 version and this is a monster move.

Reasonable expectation is something in between, which means he'll probably not be great but will be fairly useful, which is fine.

Yamamoto please, Craig.
