I'm not sure what a fight from 17 years ago tells us...

and thats my point from before. I'm not a big bettor but I wouldn't touch a fight where one guy hasn't fought in 6 years and the other hasn't won in 4...

I think it's good matchmaking. Two guys with names. Some history. Lots of uncertainty about what they'll bring to the fight. Not an obvious nostalgia fight between totally washed vets.

Good chance that we'll think one of them is a totally washed vet after this, when in fact they both might be against different competition.

Don’t even know who that is. I meant the Blaydes fight. I’ll try to turn into the undercard though if this Daukaus is a banger.

Who you got in the Joshua fight tomorrow?
Not betting that one. Usyk reminds me of Chris Byrd, but I just don’t see how guys like that survive in the modern heavyweight division, though I think Byrd beat a Klitschko.

He basically has to be perfect. It’s like betting on a shutout. But, if he can get into the later rounds, Joshua will fade, so if he can win 2 of the first 6, I think he can win 5 of the latter 6.

Gotta love the champ going toe to toe in the last round of a dangerous fight he was clearly winning.

What was Volk doing with his legs while being choked? Was that a technique or involuntary? Seems like a massive waste of energy.

It messes up the balances of the guy on top. You cannot let someone that is good at chokes settle on you when they have the choke set up. Youre trying to create any angle where you can relieve pressure from one carotid artery.

Interesting. Is that a widely accepted technique?
Thats more strategic flailing than a technique. There is not really a high percentage technique for getting out of a mounted guillotine. It is more will, heart, having a tough neck and hoping to create enough space to allow you to resist longer than the guy can squeeze. That guillotine takes a god squeeze like way more than a rear naked or the Darce choke Ortega tried to set up the time he was wall walking the cage.

edit: there are things to do along the way, but once Ortega had it wrapped up most of that shit is out the window.

Aljo pulled out of the Yan fight. I guess he's still recovering from the surgery he had.

Seems like a interim championship fight with Yan and whomever will go down. Compared to some interim bouts, this time it actually makes sense.

I'm sure the injury is legit, but I really don't think Sterling wants to fight Yan again. Assuming Yan wins an interim belt, he'll have no choice. But maybe Aljo gets lucky and a better matchup for him like Sandhagen takes Yan out.

I agree. It is really terrible and yes, it should be career ending and reputation ruining.

I think we're more likely to see the UFC use this to get Jones to fight HW at the number Dana wants. I hope I get surprised in a good way.

Well that’s a cynical take that actually makes a lot of sense :)

What’s the UFC’s policy been on domestic violence in the past? The only example I can think of is War Machine, but that was obviously an even more drastic example.

Still, McGregor was never officially suspended for any of his high profile assaults on other fights, old men in bars or shitty rappers, correct?

I think the only policy I've ever seen, and it has been a while, is that the UCF will conduct an investigation when such things happen and take disciplinary measures as appropriate. So basically, whatever Dana wants to do.

Unofficially it is probably something like one strike and you're out if you're a journeyman, two if a regional draw, and five or so if you're a star and get good PPV. Ten strikes for McGregor tho.

I mean, I know that is all sarcasm, but honestly, nothing would surprise me.

More on Jones:

https://www.bloodyelbow.com/2021/9/29/22699741/its-the-fight-business-dana-white-new-details-jon-jones-arrest-possible-sanctions-ufc-mma-news

Pretty clear that Dana isn't going to sanction him. Letting the legal process play out when the fiancé wouldn't cooperate with police says enough.

Based on my previous post, this is what I think might happen: Dana leverages this situation to get Jones to fight Stipe at a number that Dana likes.

Why? I think Dana wants a fight where Jones has the best chance to get his ass kicked. That's what people will pay to see and Dana won't have to wrap a belt around his waist if Jones wins. Good guy Stipe fighting an abuser like Jones is probably the best matchup to get that outcome.

Tawdry and gross? Yup.
