Using a refurb IPhone4 as an mp3 player: iOS issues?

Was thinking of getting an iPhone4 cheap just to use as an mp3 player while on vacation. Have seen them going for $59.
 
However, if' I'm running the latest version of iTunes on my computer, would I have issues copying files to an old iPhone running iOS5 or 6?
 
Would I be able to work around that by dragging and dropping mp3 files to the connected iPhone?
 
It just seems crazy to me that these devices would be completely unusable because of OS changes.
 
And if anyone can recommend a cheap but reliable mp3 player (not a shuffle or knockoff shuffle -- I want a screen), I'm all ears. I looked into putting a new battery into my old ipod nano 5th Gen and the expense doesn't seem to be worth it.

An older version of iOS shouldn't have any issues with syncing with any version of iTunes.
 
I played around with my original iPhone a bit several years after upgrading from it when I found it in a drawer.

I had been using my old 4S for this very thing, without issue. It was running the most current iOS version however. Since it was only for music, the phone running a little slower due to a newer OS was hardly noticeable.
