Sure didn't seem offsides to me - but it was ruled that way. No volume in the TV though, so I don't know what they were saying.

Yeah.  The announcers have been making this sound like the game is competitive.  It isn't.

The Dutch have been a little lackadaisical, at times - but when they want to get a good scoring chance, there isn't a thing the US can do to stop them.

Williams on for Beckerman now. This an important summer for him. We need to establish KB's successor as soon as possible.

California. Duh.
I hope one day the US will have a player that makes me think we are going to score when we get a free kick in that position.

Sadly the last time I saw a US player who looked dangerous on free kicks and corners in a USA jersey was Freddy Adu with the U-20s. It's been a while.

Well... I don't know what to make of this.

I stand by my earlier comments, but the US has just refused to quit playing.

That game really should have finished 8-6 Netherlands.  Shocking defensive display from the Dutch.  Some real holes in the back for the US, too.  Fun game to watch though.

Great stuff from Morris.  At this point, he's in serious contention for the Gold Cup roster.  Which should be good prep for him ahead of the Pac-12 season.

Can anyone figure out whether the game will be replayed later on any ESPN outfit, for those of us stuck at work who forgot to record?

OK, seriously...how does this happen? I get that Stanford guys wouldn't be at Stanford unless they really cared about school, but c'mon. Someone PLEASE pay Morris to play futbol all day, every day. Please?

Seattle threw a lot of money at him in April, but he wanted to go back to Stanford for his junior season.  His stock has only increased and I'd imagine that he's going to start getting solid Euro offers too.  There aren't all that many prospects as good as Morris out there who are available on a free.

His dad is the Sounders team doctor, fwiw.

Ah...I temporarily forgot when it is in the calendar. If he keeps this up in the GC, he'll be making big money somewhere in the world by August 31st.

I'll be in Amsterdam this week and would love to travel to Koln for the Germany friendly. Anyone have any idea how to get tickets? I tried joining the US Supporters Club but didn't seem like tix were available through that.

After re-watching I realize I forgot to mention something....

Brek Shea is fucking terrible, he can't play LB at all and they should be giving the starts to a player who at least has a chance to be a competent player at the position.

I just watched. I'm surprised no mention of Bradley's run on the winner. That was pretty great.

US vs. Germany is at 2:30pm ET on Wednesday.  Germany has a reasonably strong squad, but is missing Neuer, Kroos, Muller, and Reus.

The U-23s will play England in the Toulon 3rd place match on Sunday.  There's a rumor that Morris will rejoin the team for the game, and then head off to Germany for the senior NT friendly.

The U-20s play Colombia in the Round of 16 at 3:30am on Wednesday (ugh).

Just remember this whenever someone mentions an Australia WC in 2022.

Seriously. S. Korea / Japan was fine because I was a college student working at summer camp for the summer. Watching games between 1-5 am is going to suck as an adult.

That U23 match televised anywhere? Thanks TB as usual.

Edit: btw is there a reason Julian Green isnt on the main squad? Was making the WC simply to cap tie him ?

The Pine Street Inn
I was living in a condo neighborhood in Chapel Hill in 2002 (the same one where that crazy guy killed the three Muslim dental students, in fact). It was kind of cool to get up to watch matches at 3:30 and see lights on around the neighborhood and know that there were other soccer junkies around.

Then the ABC affiliate in Raleigh pre-emoted the final to run an infomercial on a Sunday morning. I had to watch it in Spanish. Fuck 2002.

Probably ay least partially.
He's also had a really rough club year and isn't playing as well (or often) as he was last year. So letting him play U-23 gets him full games instead of being a bench player on the main squad.

Green had to file a one-time switch with FIFA to be eligible to play for the USA because he had already represented Germany on youth teams.  Once he did that, there was no going back to Germany, he either played for the US or nobody, so there was no need for him to be selected for the World Cup to cap tie him.

Now, did Jurgen promise him a spot to get him to make that switch?  Probably.  But I remember everyone in the game threads saying that JK only put him in at the end of the Belgium game to cap tie him, when in reality he was already tied to the US.

Looks like the U23s are on BeIN Sports at noon, which I think is a 60 minute tape delay.  They've been doing that all tournament for some reason.  I'll miss it, as I have a big day today.

Outside of his wonderful goal against Belgium, Green hasn't done anything for club or country, so the U23s are a more appropriate place for him.  I also think he's been psychologically mishandled over the past year.  Like SFiC, I suspect Green was promised a WC spot in exchange for filing a one-time switch.  Taking a player who had never played above the German regional leagues was irresponsible, but he ended up scoring that goal so it worked out better than expected.  But then, fresh off the hype and his WC goal, Bayern pimped him out on their preseason summer US tour.  Green seemed to let this get to his head, not realizing that he was involved with the first team more for PR purposes rather than on-the-field purposes (he wasn't as close to the first team as Bayern were letting on).  Then he was loaned to a dysfunctional club (Hamburg) where he went through four managers, barely played, and reacted poorly to being sent down to their second team.

It was just a bad year.  Green was immature and hasn't made the best decisions, but he wasn't placed in a good development environment by his club, and he was given too much too soon by the USMNT.  He's young and can bounce back.  He's going to need a little more time than some hoped, though.

Meaningless roster update: Cody Cropper has replaced Nick Rimando on the roster for the Germany friendly.  Rimando wasn't going to play and has better things to do (tonight's match vs. Colorado).  Cropper isn't going to play, but doesn't have anything better to do (out of contract).

Also of note, Jozy returned to action sooner than expected with a brief sub appearance for Toronto yesterday.  Good news for the Gold Cup.

The U23s beat England 2-1 in the third place game at Toulon without Jordan Morris or Fatai Alashe, who had been two of the top US players in the tournament.  A nice ending for that motley crew of a roster.

I can't wait for the day  we can send Jozy to the glue factory.

Keep in mind the Gold Cup roster rules: 35 man provisional roster, 23 man tournament squad.  Up to six players can be swapped in after the group stage, but they need to be on the provisional roster.

I believe the provisional roster should have been submitted to CONCACAF already, but it hasn't been made public.
