Didn't realize how large Louisville (29th largest city in the US) was for that basketball-crazed state, not a bad idea. They already have an arena with sponsors.
Louisville dude here. There's been a group of high net worth types trying to lure an NBA team here for some time. I think the general mood is skeptical.

This state really doesn't care about pro sports. It's a college sports place through and through. Folks watch the NFL, but disregard everything else.

I would put Toronto in with BOS and the two NY teams and put PHI in Leftovers division
That makes more sense geographically but figured the league would want to keep those city rivalries intact.

It's hard to know how KY would support a pro team until they get a pro team. At the moment, they're into college sports because it's the only option.

The eternal suckitude of and bad crowds for the Hornets would suggest that having a big college hoops base isn't enough.

I would guess that existing propensity for pro sports would be an important factor for building a fan base for a new team. It's not like Vegas without a pro team but with all of the existing followership of the major sports.

Just a guess though.

This is about as poor of an example that can exist. Charlotte led the entire NBA in attendance for 9 consecutive years early in their existence. 24,000 fans every single home game for a decade.

I’m sure the story is on their wiki page or through Google searches. I lived down there at the time and can attest that between owner George Shinn’s legal issues, including sexual misconduct rumors, the lockout (which turned many fans there off to the NBA), and the Bobby Philly/David Wesley drag race that resulted in the formers death turned turned the fan base off to the team and the league. The final straw came when residents were adamant about not paying for a new arena using public funds after Bob Johnson bought the team, voted against it and yet the city bowed to Johnson and snuck the funding into the budget.

Prior to the Shinn & Co. fiasco there wasn’t a stronger NBA fanbase than Charlotte.
