#Patriots Pro Bowl DT Vince Wilfork has asked that the team release him after 10 seasons in New England, according to sources.

WOW.

Clearly he wanted no park of a restructuring.

This legitimately shocks me.

Dumb by Vince. At his age and weight and coming off injury he will be lucky to get half his contract on the open market. And the Pats showed they can win without him last year. Thanks for the memories big fella.

I think it sucks more for what he's done and what he's meant, rather than what he could mean going forward

Shocked and a little disappointed that Vince wasn't willing to restructure his deal. Either way, if they use the cap space to shore up the pass rush, resign Edelman, and add Browner/Woodyard, the team will be better off.

Was really hoping this would either be a restructure or the Patriots decision that they have better alternatives with the cap space.  Him asking for a release means he's gone and I'm not sure the Pats have a better option than a restructured VW.

Its a sad way for it to end.  Wish him all the best, he was a helluva Patriot

EDIT: Tommy Kelly probably safe now, and DT clearly #1 team need IMO

I'm fine with it. Who knows what Siliga can do over the course of the entire season, he's obviously not Vince, but if they have to settle with Siliga I think I'd be comfortable with that. He played extremely well in his limited time last year. I'm particularly fine with Vince leaving if the money freed allows them to add Allen.

I'm not sure that Silinga is going to be a huge step down from 2014 Vince Wilfork, given size, age, and injuries, and I've been hoping for a release all along. Sucks it has to end this way from a personal standpoint, but from a business standpoint, I'm glad it happened this way. A restructure was still going to cost too much against the cap for my liking.

I will say I am actually very surprised a re-structure was a non-starter. We love you Vince, but you have to know you're not worth 12 million bucks on the open market.

Anyway, Wilfork next to Knighton in 3...2...1...

I kid, I kid. I think.

So ... if they weren't pushing him to restructure, why would he want out?

MT @RapSheet No recent talks between Vince Wilfork & the #Pats about his contract. Approached him once about a restructure, a non-starter.

So why is he asking for his release now? I understand if the Pats were pushing hard for the restructure and he felt he'd be cut sooner or later so the sooner the better before the well is dry. But if they haven't had any recent talks the timing, at least, seems odd.

They did. It was a non-starter as in Vince was having none of it.

At least that's how I read it.

This is where I hope people remember that part of what's made the Patriots successful all of these years is their ability to avoid the "emotional move" and focus on what's really best for the team. Vince at his current cap number isn't what's best for the team. Honestly, I think he's sort of doing them a favor from a PR perspective here (not intentionally, but the Pats would rather say "he requested this" than they would "we decided to cut him.")

My guess is the recent talk in the press was the Pats wanted to see him in OTA to determine his value. Maybe he didn't want to be in that position of getting a June ultimatum  from the Pats of restructure or we'll release you. This way he has more time and more teams to to negotiate with.

deep inside Guido territory
That frees up money to go get another pass rusher and they can draft a run stuffing DT in the draft.  This doesn't cripple them if they do in fact release him.  Hell, they had 2 UDFA's there and went to the AFCCG.  Now, they have time to get an adequate replacement and build depth at the position.

Couldn't agree more. He was already showing signs of decline before the injury and I can't say I was too eager to find out how hard the achilles would push him off the cliff in 2014. A restructured and effective Wilfork would have been great but it clearly wasn't going to come together. In the end, it isn't a catastrophic loss if they use their money and draft picks well.

Obviously a lot of chips still need to fall here, but I echo those saying there's legitimate silver lining here and not just from a PR perspective. Hypothetically I'd be thrilled if they pick up Allen or Peppers, retain Kelly, and draft a D tackle in the first round. Sad to see Vince go but it makes sense.

No mystery here. He has decided not to restructure. He is smart enough to know this means he will be cut. He wants to leave now while there is still money to be spent.

100% agree. I know this was an explainable move when you consider the business/production  standpoint, but damn, Big Vince was easily my second favorite Pat behind Brady, and this move depresses me, no matter what they save. It's great for the Patriots for the future, but it still sucks to see him go like this.

Tough to see Vince go, but I think he's making the right play here for himself.*  Good luck to him.

Does anyone here think that any team will sign him for more than a 1 year, make-good type of contract for $5M or so? He is 33, huge, and coming off a severe injury. For a business savvy guy / family, I can't believe he is asking for his release. An extension / restructure would net him much more money.

When Vince was at his best he was a major plus to the defense, and worth the contract.  The problem I see, with most interior offensive and defensive lineman, is unless you are a top 3 at your position, there is not a noticeable drop off.  Would the pats have been better last year with Vince? of course, but Mayo was the one that was hardest to replace.  Same with Talib, there was a noticeable drop off in production when those two where down, but not necessarily with Vince.  Lets say they replace him with someone who makes 6 million less, couldn't there be a greater upgrade from that 6 million say at WR with that money than the upgrade to Vince?  Especially with the league turning pass happy, stopping the run is losing value.

If Vince gets cut, I could see Bill going with by far the smallest and quickest D-line in the league to get after the QB (especially with Revis back there), and 5 years from now 1/2 the NFL will be doing the same

Yup, Kelly at just more than $2M is absolutely safe into training camp where they can see how he looks.

He's quitting before he gets fired.  I'm also not sure that the Pats sign him to a deal where he is guaranteed all or most of the 7.5 he was owed for this year.

What he said, exactly. Go after a pass rusher and draft a DT. Sorry, Vince. Hope this wasn't a power play 'cause it's just what the doctor ordered.

Well, the females in the crowd just got roughly 85% better looking. I loved Vince, but to echo the prevailing sentiments, he just isn't the same guy anymore. The injury was just the final nail in the coffin, but I recall a lot of people that know a lot more than me about football commenting in game threads about how he isn't eating up two blockers anymore, not getting a big push, etc.

I hope this is just posturing for a better restructure deal and not an absolute line in the sand for Vince.. who I would hate to have him leave like this.  After my first reaction of sadness, I my immediate thought was on Bianca's twitter.. which could be very entertaining in the near term.

Are we dead certain the Pats offered an extension and not just a pay cut?

Yeah, realistically, it was time to start looking for a replacement in the draft anyways. The Patriots probably should have really been looking into that during last year's draft knowing that Vince was in his last fully guaranteed year in 2013.

Hey, can the dude who learned that the pro shop was told to move Wilfork merch give me a heads up when the order comes to move Brady merch? I'll want to be away from sharp objects.

PROBABLY not the case.....but hasnt Vince been a guy who has always said "when I cant do it anymore at a level I feel I need to be at I am done".

Maybe the achillies isnt coming back like he hoped and he is honoring the Pats with his word.
