So we have huge news and two journalists are teasing that we're going to have to wait and see? In a world where reporters would trample over their pwn mothers to tweet a scoop first?

The last time I remember someone building a story up like this, it was Jay Glazer reporting like the 50th pro athlete to get COVID-19 (yawn) and all of sports Twitter dunked on him.

Sexual harassment/racial discrimination. Gotta be one of those two.

Whenever I get tired of defending the Patriots for their various scandals, I remember it could be worse. We could be fans of this franchise,

I’ve been told it has to do with the front office firings of Alex Santos and Richard Mann II. Again no details, no specifics. Sorry people...I’m waiting just like you.

Redskins fired Alex Santos, the director of pro personnel, and Richard Mann II, the asst. dir. of pro personnel Saturday. @BenStandig first to report. Team source tells me Santos’ departure is “non-football” related, but would not elaborate. Gut tells me we’ll know why soon
What did they do that was so bad that it will overshadow the Name change?

Only the sycophantic NFL media would believe that the firing of two individuals known to no one outside Washington is some earth-shattering news that would dwarf the name change.

Edit: Using the name-that-no-longer-exists as the headquarters location for the team in the actual reporting on the name change is the height of unintentional absurdity.

Back to names, apparently there is a connection to "military" and Snyder is "very excited" about it.

I still have my money on Redtails, but also could see Generals.

An actual, non-exhibition team wouldn't actually go with "The Washington Generals," would they?

edit before posting: What Lose said above.

It's possible they dropped the news that they will officially announce a name change today as a way of mitigating publicity of whatever non-football reasons these guys were fired for. The name change news was imminent regardless, but I was surprised to read this morning that they are announcing it today.

Now, after reading the nothingburger of an announcement which confirms what everybody already knew without providing more info, I think the above is more likely.

No I would not. It's not a word I would ever consider using. And it's also a team name that 90% of NA's couldn't give a crap about. That ship appears to have sailed though so the New England Empathizers (new name for the Pats?) can now feel better that they've advocated a name change on behalf of the plebes who weren't smart enough to know they should be offended.

Would you be offended if Sean Hannity called you a Patriot?
Just wondering, what's your reasoning here? Why would you never consider using it?

Things that DC is known for unrelated to politics or government and the larger industry around them (lobbying, etc.)

Washington Half-Smokes
Washington GoGos
Washington Dukes (Ellington)

That said, the Red.... ideas above are all pretty good.

"that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise..."

A little punctuation, please.

Red Tails makes sense to honor a historically Black Unit. And it matches the "Military Connection" Rumor thats out there.

But I might go with "Americans"

Washington Americans has the same Cadence??? (Not sure of the right word) as the Washington _ _ _ _ _ _ NS.

I also like the inclusiveness of it.

As an example I offer a word whose meaning has changed. That word is niggardly. Originally meaning stingy or miserly, its origin is from the Middle Ages. Over time, a derivation of it was used in a derogatory (to say the least) sense since the mid 1500's and really picked up steam in the 1700's. In modern times, one cannot use the word niggardly without it being confused with it's derivation. In fact there are a few incidences where niggardly was used correctly in public but was misunderstood to mean something else and the user faced serious repercussions. Its use by a Washington DC aide to Mayor Williams in the late 1990's ended up getting the aide fired (though was offered his job back) for using that word in reference to official DC business. Interestingly enough, Julian Bond (then chairman of the NAACP) was taken aback by the backlash of the use of that word and reportedly said "You hate to think you have to censor your language to meet other people's lack of understanding".
Just a note, the two words are unrelated. Niggard comes from Anglo-Frisian (you can find related words across Scandinavian and low German dialects) and the latter word is simply an anglicized pronunciation of the French word for black (neger) and was used by English speakers in the late 16th/early 17th century to refer to Africans.

Shit. Touche'.

Washington Vacuums? Seems non confrontational (as its MOSTLY nothing) and indicates a kind of ineffectiveness of the franchise in general.

As a (former?) Washington fan, I’m thrilled with the name change and am looking forward to buying some merch and rooting for the Redtails going forward. I haven’t really watched them at all since the RGIII injury.

Sounds like it's going to be RedWolves - it's the only one apparently involved in a trademark issue hence why the actual name announcement is being delayed.

It'd be another racial epithet, but are we sure they've ruled out the Washington Rednecks?

I've heard there's been a delay because their first pick had trademark issues.
I'm guessing, "Washington Indian Braves."

Maybe it was "Chiefs" as in Joint Chiefs? Snyder and Co. need to put more thought into this.

I hope "Red Menaces" was ruled out.
