"Washington Commanders" is one of the longest names in professional sports and has no obvious nickname like "Bucs" or "T-Wolves." It's clumsy and doesn't roll off the tongue.

Well done, team.

Wait a minute. That’s it? They don’t have a maroon jersey with yellow pants?

The white uniforms are atrocious. There’s a different number font for each color scheme. The whites look like a modern Pac-10. I like the basic W logo in the helmet and that should be paired with a retro uniform theme. Washington has a great color scheme and old uniforms. They should have really leaned into that instead of this modern bullshit.

The only short nickname that feels natural is The Mandies.

They should totally give players star ranks based on how cut-able they are.

Really thought they’d make the yellow hue golder or deeper (a la Norte Dame). If they don’t have burgundy over some kind of yellow/gold as a uniform option, I’ll be shocked.

I don’t mind adding the black, but I think a dark navy would have been a better choice. The set they showed looks reminiscent of what Maryland football is currently doing (which may be kinda smart?)

As a DC Local, I remember when the entire fan base was outraged when newly hired head coach Jim Zorn referred to the team as the "maroon and black." It now appears that he was looking into the future.

They should lean into the Commies short form. Their D Line will be the Red Scare.A long drive is The Long March.

I actually like the Commanders, the New “W” logo, and the crest that they’ve designed, but those uniforms are absolutely terrible.

I’m okay with the team name, although it feels like they were looking for an alternative to “Generals”. The logo is okay, the lettering is a ripoff of the Steelers, as is the alternate black uniform. The other uniforms look dull, but that can be remedied.

This is on the same level of disappointment as the opening of Al Capone's vault.

Horrible name. Commanders is too long and you know the Cowboys, Giants, and Eagles fans are already putting crayon to poster-board calling them Commies.

Uniforms are dismal.

Snyder was already at rock-bottom and he broke out his shovel with this one.

Am I the only one to notice that they went through all of this to to make the name change and there seems to be little to no marketability in what they are presenting. No real logo of any sort, a fairly generic "W" on the helmet. It's almost like they really didn't give a fuck about this.

In the simulacrum
Even after the joke wears thin, they are going to be the 'Commies.' Even independent of the political joke, it just rolls off the tongue more easily as the cute little nickname: "Pats beat the Commies 27-14 to open the season" etc.

It's whatever, within a few years nobody will feel it's out of place (see the Wizards).

I will say, the Washington Football Team name and branding was actually good, simple well made, etc. I get it had to go for branding and trademark reasons, but it was top half of the league or better.

I noticed the same thing. WFT was cool and unique, in a sort of ironic, post modern way. A team without a name, and a logo. This just feels obligatory and dull. Hard to see how it results in meaningfully more sales of swag.

I was hoping they'd go with the Washington Loafers, or Blazers, as a reference to the de facto dress code of aides on Capitol Hill. Oh, well...

The Commanders is bad in isolation, but it becomes brutal when you try to hear it in context:

"This Commanders' drive started all the way back at their own 20"...

"The Commanders are struggling to contain the edge"...

"The Commanders take a commanding lead!"

Etc

Garbage tier name. Washington might have the worst collection of team names of any city. Commanders, Wizards, Nationals, Capitals. Basically a starter pack for generic no licensing rights movie team names.

I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I would've loved the Washington Capitols, just for the hilarity & confusion.

Edit: not to mention, if that did happen, you might see some neat, organic nicknames locals might use to differentiate the "O team" from the "A team". I don't know.

The weird thing is that Washington Football Team was so generic it kind of wrapped around and became a good, almost European-football style, name. Particularly for DC - evoked the grind of anonymous bureaucracy

Yeah it's like you've given those who saw no need for a name change no reason to get on board and those who supported it nothing to be excited about. I mean teams continually tweak logos and designs in the name of selling more merch. Washington was starting with a clean slate and could have made a huge splash in that respect. If your a franchise is looking to move on, what better way is there is to get your fan base TOTALLY excited about the moves you've made? IMO a huge part of that is your merchandising plan. Hard to see what sort or impact that makes with what they've presented.

Washington Football Team was great. I think you're on point, but it was unique here in its weird sort of European generic-ness.

Commanders! Generals! Admirals! Captains! Meh.

Totally agree. They lucked into a pretty unique name that a creative marketing team could have done some fun things with and now they have a boring name that's already a complete dud.

I agree. I thought it ended up being, in its own particular/bizarre way, a kind of neat team name. Definitely unique, that's for sure.

Commanders? Yuck.

Among the many strange things about the Washington football team, this new patch.

The franchise claims the actual year it won the Super Bowl (1983, 1988, 1992) and not the NFL season (1982, 1987, 1991).

Do we say the 2002 Patriots won the Super Bowl? Of course not.
To me this is the most outrageous part of all of this. Like, how can you fuck this part up? Who that came to this conclusion thinks the 2022 Super Bowl will determine the 2022 NFL Champion?

Agree, although with the Nationals and Capitals, D.C. area people can and have embraced easy nicknames that work much better on a marketing level (Caps, Nats -- and obviously 'Skins was loved). The Wizards is still just really bad. And I don't see anything you could do with Commanders that works on that same nickname marketing level.

I'm completely with you on this. Caps and Nats make sense for DC teams, and it's obviously unique to the city. Personally, I like them. Wizards is pitiful, I'd say worse than Commanders. But WFT was beautiful and this is garbage. More LOL for this franchise.
