The OL should be a decent bit better in 2 weeks. Add in Edelman, Gronk, Amendola and Lafell all finally on the field again together and a decent looking running game and that will be a big help to Brady. The offense will look a lot different in 2 weeks.
With the OL in tatters, they scored 14 and the Chiefs hung 41 on them last year. The next week they were healthier and the Pats hung 43 on the Bengals, allowing 17, I think—it would seem a few degrees' difference can make a big, big difference in OL play.

Not all high ankle sprains are serious. Many different degrees. BRADY has mild one, OK for playoffs. @Patriots fans can relax @MikeReiss
Relax my ass. He's lucky he doesn't have a broken ankle or a broken leg. Suh is such a dirty, cheap shot bastard, makes me sick how he plays with obvious intent to injure. On that play, he beats Cannon, so Cannon reaches out and grabs Suh's facemask and Suh basically launches himself at Brady's lower body, a half assed, lame attempt to look like he fell into him.

Such as asshole.

Are people really concerned about the ankle based on a slight limp going down some steps immediately following the game and with Brady having 12 days to rest it while receiving world class treatment for a sprain?

I think most (well me...I'm extrapolating) are more peeved that he's hurt at all. Given what we know about high ankle sprains and how it looked on TV, I don't think the concern is unwarranted.

Is this why the flag wasn't thrown for roughing? The group I was watching with was screaming at the TV so I didn't get a chance to hear what Gannon had to say about it.
Yes. It was an illegal hands to the face. I couldn't tell if that's what led Suh into Brady's legs or Suh being Suh.

Given the game plan (and what it said about the coaching staff's level of "have-to" on this particular Sunday), TB12 shouldn't have been playing at that point anyway. That's what is most frustrating to me.

The healing process for someone 38 is a bit different than a kid out of college....what is really frustrating is based on the team's effort, the game plan, and play of the OL, he never should have seen the field. He's lucky he is not in traction.

We get it people are made that Brady was exposed to injury and looks like he got dinged. But do you think it's going to actually affect him in two weeks? Unless you can go back and change history then that's all that matters now. Personally I think this is going to be nothing but talk radio fodder and not matter at all during the game. We know sprains have different grades, he went to the bench and not the trainers table, he wasn't immediately put in a walking boot post game. There is one video of him gingerly walking down steps right after the game, with everything else we know that's not enough to get me worried about this being impactful to Brady

Watch the replay and I think you'll conclude it was the latter and not the former. Just like he walked backwards into Rodgers bum calf by accident.

He's got a gift of making his multiple intent to injure incidents look like accidents.

Just a matter of time before he ends someones career.

No more than I was about his ankle sprain/issue leading up to the 2008 Super Bowl or Gronks ankle sprain leading up to the 2012 Super Bowl.

He had a high ankle sprain in the 2001 AFCCG, which as we all know forced him out of the game. He obviously played in the Super Bowl, which I believe was only on 1 week of rest.
Correct, one week as there was no extra week off between the AFCCG and the Super Bowl that year. But, Tom was 14 years younger. Hard to believe.

There's still only been one report I've seen of a "high" ankle sprain, and that's Breer. Anyone else have that?

First, take a look at my tag line. I know A LOT of people. (Poking fun at myself, for those wondering). Second, I will stipulate in advance that some will guffaw, fart and make other noises about inside, anonymous sources. That's all fine and good.

But because I am a Pats fanatic and know that many others here are in the same category, I am going to share something I just heard from someone who claims to have inside information:

Brady's ribs are VERY sore. Not so sore that he is expected to miss the divisional round. But he is hurting big time.

I vomited in my mouth before posting.

I heard he's VERY hungry, too. Not so hungry that he is expecting to pass out. But he's hankering for a hunk of cheese, big time.

Does anyone have a sense of whether or not we'll see Edelman returning punts in the playoffs? He's clearly a major step up from Martin (if healthy) and could really help in the field position game, maybe even putting some points on the board. On the other hand, returning punts ups his injury risk and we've seen what happens to the offense without him. Worth the risk? I lean toward yes, for as long as the outcome of the game is in doubt, but I'm willing to be convinced otherwise. Thoughts?

EDIT: Meant to put this in the Playoff Performance thread. Dopes, feel free to move. Sorry.

I'd lean toward Amendola returning them.

If we see Edelman back there on the first PR of the game in 2 weeks, I'd be feeling pretty good about his health.

Even when they are both healthy, they usually split duties. My untrained eye tells me that they usually use JE when they think there is a chance to bust a return - like when the opposition is punting inside their own 25 or so. But when the opponent is punting from closer to midfield it seems like they tend to use DA since his more likely duty is to either fair catch or let it bounce for a touchback. Hoping we see the same on the 16th.

Edelman's career return average is 12.0 (8.1 this season); Martin's with the Patriots is 11.5. There's not that much of a difference ... particularly since the injury onslaught has taken its toll on putting together ST units as well.

Edelman has been shown to be more fearless, certainly; but that aspect of his return game could be clamped down in the playoffs, given the need to stay healthy.

I think we'll see a combo, Edelman and Martin splitting duties when the punt is coming from deep in the opponent's side of the field. Amendola or Edelman when the ball is likely to be fielded closer to the Pats end zone

Edelman is statistically one of the best punt returners of all time. While it may make sense to put someone besides Edelman back there for various reasons, Im highly skeptical there isn't much difference between Edelman and Martin as a return man.

I keep thinking about the Vernon hit on Brady on Sunday. At the time it seemed gratuitous, but it pretty clearly was targeting the ribs. Perhaps the Dolphins also heard something? Wonder if a rib injury would hurt passing acuracy, especially on the deep ball, which seems even worse than usual?

As opposed to targeting what? His head or knees?

Trying to wrap him up like a normal sack. He launched at his mid-back with his right(?) arm tucked in, leading with his shoulder. I recall noting that it looked awkward and painful in the rib area. Not saying it was intentional or especially dirty, outside the late hit aspect, but it certainly looked odd enough when it happened.

The reason it was dirty is because it was late. Otherwise it would have been a totally legal and reasonable hit in the NFL. It's really not that uncommon for QBs who are getting sacked/hit in the pocket to get clobbered. With their 49 sacks the Patriots did lots of damage to NFL QB's this year. They knocked Mariota and Hoyer out of games and put some serious, serious hits into Osweiler, Taylor, and a few others. Taylor had the look of a QB with a broken collar bone and I remember being pretty surprised Brock was able to finish the game because they practically annihilated him on multiple occasions.

But how do you separate Edelman's performance from the rest of special teams? The Patriots special teams have been good to very good for almost all of Belichick's tenure, and previous returners have been very good. Amendola has averaged 12 this year, was at 8 last year, and 13 the year before that. Welker averaged 10+. Faulk average 13 his last year (And 10+ over the previous couple years).

Martin looking good doesn't surprise me all that much - the Patriots make a big deal of special teams - they block well.

Is there an easy place to look up punt returns by distance, rather than average? My instinct is that three fair catches and one 40 yard return is preferable to four returns of 10 yards each, in terms of scoring probability. My instinct is also that Edelman is more likely to provide the occasional big return. Does this sound plausible, or am I off my rocker?

Honestly, I do not.

If you don't ascribe any reliability to my information, just move along.

And if the mods would prefer that I not post information anonymously, they can tell me that. If they do, I will refrain from doing so.

In this case, my source is a client/friend who is close to someone with the Pats. I don't know if you regard that as a reasonable description of my source but that's as far as I can go.

Does your client/friend go by the acronym SoV? At least give us that much.

TS, you have to know well enough by now that any "anonymous" info from a "friend of a friend's sister" is going to get slammed. And rightfully so.

You should keep posting because it's helpful in the sense that if you say Brady's ribs are really sore, it means they aren't at all and Brady's shoulder probably hurts.

Unless information is still useful.

That's fine. I have no problem not sharing stuff here. Someone once speculated that it's some self-aggrandizement thing...which is comical given the reactions. It was based on the desire to share with other Pats nuts but it's not worth the blow back and I do appreciate that it's hard to take stuff seriously when it's not sourced. So I will move along....

In any event, as a parting shot/nugget to ignore or assume is exactly wrong, I do stand by the ribs thing. It's quite bad. But here's to me looking WRONG WRONG WRONG and Tom playing as if nothing is wrong. For three more games this year. I would like nothing more. Cheers.

You simply cannot deny that everything you have commented on has been incorrect. It's not that people don't want inside information, I think it is cool if we can get some info that isn't public.

But your information isn't inside information. It's incorrect information. So I'm a bit surprised at your reaction to people not wanting to hear it anymore. You're wrong, every time. So when you say, "Tom Brady's ribs are really bad," my first and only reaction would be to assume his ribs are nothing but what they normally are.
