It's worth Southgate's time to ask, but given how international all these clubs are; would England really be at that big of a disadvantage? The Portugal manager should be lobbying the FA to give Wolves a cupcake opponent too.
And I'd be fine with that. Give it to Wolves, or anyone who asks. Make that the week with top-vs-bottom matchups. Every team with players bound for Qatar will hold them out or play them as subs, it'll be heavily rotated - and that's fine. Nobody wants to watch a world cup where the players are already exhausted or banged-up coming in.
And if you think the same conversations aren't happening between every Qatar-bound FA and their League, in Spain, Germany, Egypt and the rest, you're kidding yourself.
In a normal world cup year, everyone except the teams contesting the UCL Final has been off for ~4 weeks before the WC starts. Sure, they've been training for much of that time, but nobody's needed to give max effort or run themselves down. Here, they've got barely a week and a half. The Peruvian Sash. I hated it when I was a kid, and I was probably in my 30's when I finally let it go. Scotland in Argentina for WC 1978. I was just a child but I had an excuse.... grown men and grand fathers were taken in by Ally MacLeod and his mindless ethusiasm and relentless optimism.
I was still in primary School, but I remember the Peru-Scotland game like yesterday. It broke my heart. I was caught up in a wave of euphoria. Scotland took the lead after about 15 minutes, all going to plan, what could go wrong? Peru equalized with some quick feet in midfield, quick passing and they sliced the Scotland defence to pieces. Only a blip. Second half... Scotland get a penality! Don Mason stepped up and took a penality yer maw could save. Peru came forward and score from shot lashed in from about 25 yards. Allan rough had barely enough time to swivel his head and stood like a statue... he watched the ball crash into the back of the net. Next up, Peruvian player upended just outside the box, free kick about 20 yards out again. I'll never forget this goal. I was to try immitating many times on the pitch later. Player strolls up, well right off the keepers right post, you're expecting a shot from his left foot....instead, he clips it with the outside of his right. Allan rough helpless again. Peru, you broke this kids heart.
But we'll always have Archie Gemmill's goal against Holland.
One hell of a run by Costa Rica to make the WC. Took 19 out of a possible 21 points to close out qualifying and now won the play-in game.

They’ve scored one goal in four UEFA Nations League matches this summer, and that goal was a pen, so zero goals from open play in four matches. Is this a Southgate issue? The talent on that team should be more competitive.
I am not unhappy that the US's toughest group stage opponent appears to be in a pretty deep funk. Hope it continues into November.

I haven't watched any of the games; my guess is they haven't played well, and they are also rotating a bunch of people around and not playing their best XI every game. Also you have to imagine a lot of their players are exhausted and are not necessarily up for this FIFA/UEFA cash grab.
The 1-0 loss to Hungary in Budapest is bad, but not really that bad. Draws with Italy and Germany are fine in a vacuum. Getting crushed 4-0 at home to Hungary? That has got to be a wakeup call; and they have Germany and Italy to close things out so I'm not sure it is going to get much better.
They were a little unlucky the first four matchdays, but the quality came out in the end. They righted they ship in the middle part of qualifying and after they drew is Azteca and the U.S.A. lost to Canada pretty convincingly, I think I asked on these boards: Why the hell is everyone talking about Panama?
I am going to miss CONCACAF qualification so much. In many ways, it has been my favorite sporting event. Maybe even more than the World Cup itself. There's just absolutely nothing like it. The margins are just so razor thin. You make these judgments about teams halfway through, but in the end it always turns out so close.
I truly believe that the 0-0 game in Azteca to have been one of the most important results that the U.S.A. has ever had in the history of it's program. But it will mostly be forgotten. I'd like to think we would have beaten New Zealand, but it would have been an absolutely brutal few months waiting for that game with all the weight of the last cycle.
It's hard to believe that we can keep saying this... but that might be the worst red I've ever seen (worst, as in worst call, ie not a red, not even a yellow, not even a foul).
