Why not give the tri state area Pats/Dolphins, two of the Jets divisional rivals?

If I'm reading that right, there are no blackouts and everyone gets 4 Sunday afternoon games. I don't think I've ever seen that before. Is that new for the whole season or a Week 1 bonus?

And for the 2nd year in a row, no MNF double feature in Week 1.

Starting last year I think the NFL allowed CBS and FOX to broadcast games when the other channel is showing the home team up to four times a year. So I think there will still be some Sunday afternoon blackouts, just not as many.

So… from that nap, which city in Connecticut along 95 does the map turn from red to blue (chiefs to pats)? Looks to be past Stamford at least…

I have family in Stratford (Fairfield County) and they don't get the Hartford CBS affiliate on their cable system, instead the CBS affiliate out of New York. The next town further north, Milford (New Haven County), gets CBS-Hartford.

Here in Orlando, glad to trade the great (getting Pats-Miami as the CBS late game) with the bad (getting Jax-Houston as the early game as opposed to basically any other game on that slate),

From the Pats/Dolphins pre-game thread:

From Peter King's latest:

• This is the first season of what the NFL is calling double-doubleheader weeks, something the NFL is starting this year and carrying through the remainder of the new TV contracts signed earlier this year. Each year in Week 1 and Week 18, the league, instead of focusing on one network with a mega-game in the late doubleheader window, will put a big game on both FOX and CBS in the late window. This year, the schedule was set up this way next Sunday: Cleveland-Kansas City at 4:25 p.m. on CBS, and Green Bay-New Orleans at 4:25 p.m. on FOX. (CBS gets the added benefit of Steelers-Bills at 1 p.m. ET, which would be worthy of a prime-time slot itself.) The NFL needed Saints-Packers in that slot because the other FOX games that day (Seattle-Indy or Denver-Giants) wouldn’t have delivered near the audience that Packers/Aaron Rodgers/first Saints game post-Brees will deliver.

• A good doubleheader game might draw 24 million viewers (Green Bay-Indy last year, Week 11) or 23 million (Kansas City-New Orleans in Week 15). The NFL is hoping that two games with four fan bases with big TV followings can generate a total audience of 36-38 million viewers. Losing Green Bay-New Orleans would have scuttled that plan. So there was never any serious thought of postponing the game so it could be played in New Orleans later in the year.

I like how they worked to extend a little sliver from Florida into Alabama to help them see the Battle of Bama QBs
I’m not an expert on the rules, but I think there’s some local discretion. In addition to the Pats being picked up in Alabama and western Georgia, it appears a couple small markets in Louisiana are picking up the Vikings-Bengals game, presumably because local interest in Joe Burrow trumps any purported interest in watching the Saints’ division rival play. And there seems to be a split of opinion in New York State about the degree to which the locals care about Pats-Dolphins that doesn’t neatly break along geographic lines.

Ugh, CLE @ KC most of the country in the late spot...
What difference does it make?

And I don't get the complaint. It is two playoff teams facing off, (in a rematch of a very good playoff game) with one of the most popular players in the NFL QBing one of the teams. And the other QB is a national pitch man.

In the other game, it's the Pats versus Miami, with Mac Jones going against Tua. Neither team made the playoffs last year.

It makes perfect sense KC/Cle would get most of the map.

The only difference is I'll have to find a feed other than my TV.

I agree this game deserves most of the map, I just wasn't aware it was lined up to be there until today.

Last year had a doubleheader of Steelers @ Giants (Fowler and Herbie called the game) and Titans @ Broncos (debut of Levy/Griese/Riddick). I am really going to miss the second MNF game for all the unintentional comedy (Three Mikes, Boomer and Dilfer, the one game Rex Ryan ever called, Sergio Dipp).

I’m taking the Bills in my survivor pool. I think Pittsburgh is secretly terrible.
They’re so overrated they’re underrated.

The Steelers went 7-2 in one-score games and are sure to regress, but they did go 12-4. If they are “secretly terrible” it will be one of the biggest year-over-year declines in recent NFL history. I’m a huge Josh Allen fan, but this is not the week to take the Bills in survivor. Especially since they host Houston in Week 4, and I’m not seeing a lot of great options that week.

If I was going to make an unconventional survivor pick this week, I’d take Carolina to beat the Jets.

Isn’t this basically how Sikhism was founded?
Don’t know but I really don’t want to wear the hat. I have great hair. If I start balding I’ll look into it.

edit: “having” to carry a dagger would be a plus

The Fox 1:00 games are very meh. I guess Seahawks Indy is sorta interesting but the others aren’t very exciting.

Thanks, you are correct. I had a memory of no DH last year but it did happen!

That's where you need the OTA antenna for an afternoon.

I’m skeptical how the Steelers will compete with zombie Ben + an OL that’s offensive to OLs. I’d feel more than comfortable taking Buffalo in survivor. Steelers have to hope they can get the ball out quickly and that their defense will carry them. I think they will be around .500 but probably a game or two under. It’s also a tough matchup for them going against a Buffalo DL which should give them problems.

I'm not sure Ben is that much of a zombie. He was coming back from a pretty tough offseason surgery last year. There is very little reason to think he won't be more peppy this year.

His arm looked pretty dead from what I saw in preseason. The one pass I saw him throw over 15 yards looked like a punt, kinda like last year.

The Steelers always manage to be pretty competitive, but Ben tailed off a lot last season and was awful in their playoff game (which he salvaged a bit with an all-time stat padding performance) and I think this might be the year where he just goes belly-up for good.

He’s 39 and has been in noticeable physical decline for a while, and it’s not like he was in great shape before. He might be cooked, even if he does not look as bad as he was late last year.

Maybe it is just me and I suck at survivor pools but I think it is pretty hard to gauge from year to year anything other than the very top and the very bottom teams. I think it's a mistake thinking that certain matchups are going to be good or bad based on how the teams were last year.

Plus it's NFL football. I was sort of not that into it last year between COVID, no fans in the stands, and the fact that I didn't expect much from the Pats for the first time in 20 years. But I'm so fired up right now. I haven't studied the matchups but what is not to like?

Not in great shape is being rather nice. I was sort of impressed that he was able to play QB last year despite being so god damn fat.

Houston's opponent? Although Jags this week so might want to avoid that one.

Potentially bad news for the Ravens
From Rap sheet:
The #Ravens cut short practice today after CB Marcus Peters and RB Gus Edwards sustained potentially significant knee injuries on back-to-back plays, per me and @MikeGarafolo. The team is having tests done on both players
