Fans back, in very small numbers, in some parks but not all, no away fans, no singing.

Everton with another weird lineup due to the absence of both fullbacks. Carlo had natural RB, Kenny, and LB, Nkonkou, as well as a very good looking young winger, Gordon, but they’re not even in the 18. Getting worried about the manager which WTF.

Everton players seem to have a hard time moving without the ball. Two defenders collapse on the ball handler and the three Everton players just stand there or take off down the field. No one is moving into a passing lane.

poor.

started horribly (Burney goal at 3’)

formation played like a 523. Nothing going forward and disorganized without the ball. Midfield doing nothing to get the ball and get it to the attackers.

Delph out wide left was putrid. Digne is sorely missed. Provides such energy in attack snd great crossing into the box. Delph was a statue.

But thenDelph pulled a hammy. Gomes on abe it played more like a 442 or 343 with Gomes playing centrally, Godfrey at LB, snd Richy handling the wide attack on left. Immediate improvement. Goal in stoppage time, Richy penetration and ball into DCL in the 6 yard box.

Still this is fucking Burnley. High flying Everton of the start is nowhere to be seen.

Oh good save by Pope. Siggy couldn’t quite get anything on the ball

I haven’t heard a single coherent argument for Pickford over Pope in at least a year. What does Southgate have in front of him that we don’t see week in and week out?

Agree. Shouldn’t be called. When I played (at a crap level of course)refs would tell you “not enough in it”. That standard has just disappeared

Agreed on both points - and it's one of those where, if it wasn't called and went to VAR, it would've likely been given since contact was there / could be seen on super slow-mo

Grrrr....ESPN+ is still fucked up, so I missed the goal Gio just scored.

And it sounds like it was pretty. Dammit.

I didn’t start the thread last night, but I watched the Berlin derby last night with a Hertha supporter friend (who, to his credit, says if he was picking now instead of being born into it, he’d be a Union fan) and it was ugly. Robert Andrich took made one of the ugliest challenges I’ve seen in a while after Union went up 1-0 (against the run of play) and the wheels fell off after the red card and ended 3-1 (and Union’s 8 game unbeaten streak).

Oh, and Max Kruse wrecked his knee in totally meaningless stoppage time. And they have Bayern and Dortmund in two of the three games without Andrich. Good times.

Bayern vs. RB Leipzig is good shit so far. Leipzig took the lead, Bayern scored two to respond, and then Leipzig immediately tied it up.

Well deserved for the Hammers. They’ve been dangerous all half.

I prefer Bruno Fernandes FC because they’re completely awful without him

Edit: I fully expect to regret this post on Derby day

What’s the over/under on how many times Bruno dives in the Citeh box? 12.5? Does he up his game and do it a few times when the ball is in his defensive end?

It’ll be some piece of trash like Dan James diving in the box to earn the penalty for Fernandes to score

One thing that is almost always true in this league is that you will pay for missing the kinds of chances WH blew. It just always happens

ESPN had a nice story about the Hertha/Union rivalry. I didn’t realize the East/West Berlin dynamics of the teams.

They started out as more a big brother vs little brother, and now have morphed into an intra city rivalry on par with the London Arsenal/Chelsea/Tottenham matches.

Every crowd shot shows a bunch of folks without masks or using them as chin bibs. The level of irresponsibility is staggering

As devastated as I am about the state of the US right now, seeing the stupidity is universal makes me feel the slightest bit better.

If Werner would occasionally shoot for the far post he would have more success. You can see goalies cheating near post on most of his runs.

Regulations let people not wear them when sitting in their seats. Though some keep them on because it's cold. It's the same as the regulations in English bars before the latest lockdown - have to have them on to move about, whilst you're seated with only people from your bubble, no need.

Ah, TIL. Still seems wild to me, but I've been seeing cops in MA pulling people over and walking up to their windows maskless, so I guess it's all relative

Pulisic gets style points for 4 full revolutions on that final foul.
I’m torn.

I’m desperate for a world-beating US player. I can’t stand divers and embellishers.

I’m going to justify my Pulisic fandom here by giving him a pass as a man made out of wet tissue paper and spider silk. If he needs to dissipate a foul by rolling out of the stadium, we’ll pretend we don’t hate Neymar for doing the same thing.

I don't really begrudge any PL player for diving. Even before VAR (though it's greatly exacerbated the problem), the player and their team do not get rewarded for staying on their feet.

Look at Salah in his first Liverpool campaign - would stay up at all costs, arguably scored more goals because of the persistence, but never really won penalties. Since then, he's been much more inclined to dive all over the place, as have players like Mane, Richarlison, Sterling, Martial... basically any skilled attacker who can touch the ball away from a marker in tight space.

To put it another way - when you have abject horseshit like Welbeck drawing a penalty last week (two strides after contact) and Salah drawing one on Masuaku a couple weeks ago both being backed up by VAR, what incentive to players have to not dive?
