Better to know now if you need the 2 than to be driving late down 8, score, then don't get the 2, and you're screwed because there's no time left

But in that case if you fail at the 2pt you are done.
This way, you know what you need to get done in the last 8 minutes. they'll probably fail to do it the way today is gone, but you'd rather have the risk sooner than later because you have more time to adjust to the outcome of the 2 pt attempt
I think the "don't go for 2 until the end" is the single most infuriating topic that should be unbelievably easy to understand but never is in sports today.
A) Go for 2 and fail early - you know you need two scores and can plan accordingly.
B) Go for 2 and fail at the end - you're fucked.
It's the simplest logic I can imagine, and still, every single time you hear "Now it's a two score game!"

And why would you be any more likely to get the two pointer if you try it later?
Exactly. You need a 2 no matter what. Better to know early than late if you have to go for two more scores. The announcer made no sense.
You wouldn't of course---that's why the "wait to go for it" logic is silly.
