I have switched from beer to whiskey. Also I haven't sat down in about 90 minutes. They want to kill me.

Moving the Line
Seriously. Remember 2011 against Montreal. Oh my god. I'm pretty sure the rest of my life since then has just been me living as a ghost.
Oh dear God. Could not help but move like every second of that OT, sitting and being stationary that game was not an option. I was so worried about Thomas giving up a soft one from like the blue line. Every change was pure agony given the massive speed disadvantage that team faced. Julien's system had been beaten too many times by odd man rushes off transitional hockey. Was convinced it was going to happen again.

Goucher and Hnidy can't stop talking about how they lost on a blown call. Pretty sure the part they lost was where they gave up 4 goals on a powerplay to a team that was missing one of its top forwards.

People other than me in the Bay Area still care about hockey!
I go back with the Sharks to Jamie Baker knocking out Detroit in 1994 and have been watching Sharks playoff games late at night since I moved East in 2003, and I've never seen anything like that. They had a four-goal comeback against LA in the playoffs several years ago, but they weren't behind so late in the game and it wasn't a game 7.

You certainly can't ignore giving up all those pp goals, but the bad call precipitated everything. Don't make that, none of it happens. They guessed, based on Pavelski's injury, and shifted the entire game.

both things are kinda true here... NHL will get roasted for the call

at worst it should have been a minor, 1 PPG, Sharks probably fall short

all that said, it was an epic collapse all the same

Let's not forget the refs also gifted a goal to Vegas earlier in the game that shouldn't have counted.

During that whole sequence Gallant really screwed up too. He could have taken a timeout to try and slow the Sharks' momentum down, and he probably could have challenged for goalie interference on the second one. Probably would have been unsuccessful, but you never really know with review, and it would have slowed the game down.

How do they score that for power play stats? I looked on the game sheet and it says San Jose was 4/9 on PP - but it looked like there were only 4 Vegas penalties...does it re-set to a new power play after each goal in a major?

Statistically, yes. You can't have a perfect PP when one of them is a major, because eventually the other team kills it. I'd say it's a problem, but I've cited two examples of teams scoring multiple goals on a major PP, and there may not be too many more besides that. In tonight's case, the Sharks were 4/5 on that PP alone, then 0/4 on the rest (the Knights took 4 minors and a major on the game).

I was live on the air on the UC Davis campus radio station in 1994 when the Sharks got KOed in the playoffs in OT. I know a handful of Sharks fans that go back that far or further, and I'm happy for them.

That said, I always joke with those friends that I own a Neely B's jersey that I bought before the Sharks played their first game.

Possibly the worst, most game-changing call I’ve ever seen, especially given neither ref had an arm up until play was stopped due to Pavelski’s injury. It’s a minor penalty at the very worst

Video review for majors is pretty much a shoo-in at this point

I saw a tweet where the ref told Gallant he cross checked him in the face. Which is blatantly not true.

I went to bed at 3-0 and woke up to a flurry of texts from friends. I just watched the recap. Wow. If I was a Vegas fan I’m not sure how I’d be doing this morning. Pissed at the call but in disbelief that my team collapsed for 4 goals in 5 minutes. Short handed or not, that’s terrible.

Usually I fall asleep to the west games but my cable is out on the bedroom. I don't think I would have lasted the 3rd with it being 3-0. That said, watched it this morning. Holy crap. No way that is 5. Borderline two. Gotta think the injury played a factor in the call when it really shouldn't.

I agree. There was no immediate call on the ice, and maybe it’s worth 2 at most. The injury was more caused by Stastny than Eakin, yet they still assessed it to him. Wonder if we’ll get a comment from the NHL...

I agree that it was a bad call, especially considering the refs clearly didn't see what happened (they had no intention of making a penalty call until after they realized and injury had occurred). I think the initial contact was mostly clean, though could have been two as Eakin and Pavelski were away from the puck and Eakin pretty clearly extended his arms to make extra contact with Pavelski, but I think it's something that goes uncalled 99% of the time. Statsny was really just trying to get arounda player who flew in his way, but the way he pushed down on Pavelski in the flow of making contact was cetainly was caused the head injury.... but I don't think any of it was dirty (see: Nazem Kadri). It was a really unfortunate play, especially consider Pavelski is still revoering from a broken jaw (if I heard correctly). i hope Pavelski is okay and can come back to play before too long, as I like him as a player.

So, maybe 2, definitely not 5 is where I stand on the penalty call.

With that said, there is a long history of teams not allowing 4 goals on a single 5 minute power play in the NHL. Like, the entire history of the league except for one other game. Vegas absolutely crumbled, and what happened to them last night was inexcusable, and pretty close to as bad as Toronot's implosion in 2013. What made Gallant choose not to use his timeout after the second Sharks goal... I don't think he will ever be able to explain that away. Sure, the call contributed... a lot. I still think the Knights have to shoulder most of the blame for what happened, though.

Yep. I goes in the books as 4/5 for the major.

As for the penalty itself, once they made the decision to call one, it had to be 5. I’m pretty sure an infraction that results in injury is supposed to be a major. I don’t think they could’ve given him 2. The problem of course is the decision to penalize was made after the injury.

I'd like to point out, since nobody else has, that that was an atrocious penalty call. This is a two-minute cross check.

That was a bad call on Eakin, the problem was the second hit on Pavelski as he was stumbling backwards is what caused his injury.

It was not dirty nor was there intent to injure on the play, just bad luck for the player the way he landed, that looked brutal, talk about a rough series for him injurywise.

Eakin's initial hit is not what caused the injury.

Edit; sorry, I posted this after your follow up post and you explained it much better than I did.

A league official reached out to Vegas GM and apologized for the call, per the Vegas GM. The official is not named.

Those 2 refs are done too. O’Halloran is usually one of their go-to’s.

They also bounced the officials who worked game 2 of Bruins/Leafs.

Would it help if I pointed out that the head of officials is Don van Massenhoven?

EDIT: Whoops, he was just the SJ-Vegas series supervisor. Still, an organization that gives him power has some question marks.
