What about Bobby?

I feel like all of this adds up to a trade. Something minor but interesting. We'll see how it plays out but this crunch together with the Alfaro situation makes me think it is heading that way.

It's Dalbec a plus defender at his original position, third?

I can't imagine Cora is legitimately trying to convince anyone Dalbec is a plus defensive shortstop or even at first.
He improved at 1st last year considerably from ‘21.
Maybe Cora means it like how legendary writer, dream-weaver, visionary director, “plus” actor, Garth Merenghi meant it???

Dalbec, early in his minor league career looked like he might become very good at 3b. There were endless debates, once upon a time about how Dalbec may be better suited for 3b whereas Devers might have to move.

But as he's aged into his mid 20's he's lost a lot of athleticism. That isn't a dig at him, it's not like he's shown up out of shape or anything like that, but he's just reportedly regressed in terms of mobility. At present time he's not really an option there for a full time position. He was also really bad at 1B last season.

I think Dalbec playing different positions this Spring isn't an endorsement of his ability, defensively. Rather, I think it's a reflection that they still like enough about his offensive upside that they'd like him to get reps all over the field to serve as an emergency option on the higher end of the defensive spectrum. I also think they probably want to see him get regular reps at 1B, still to spell Casas and maybe play a little OF, as well.

The guy can hit bombs and when he's right, he can also take a walk. He's at least a 70 raw power guy. That's why they're doing this. Not because they think he can field. Ultimately, if he's able to bounce back, his best internal path to an everyday role is likely to be to replacement of Turner after his contract expires.

Absolutely. Sure, he struggled as he was learning the position. Last year, though, he was great at scooping out low throws, saving his infielders (especially 3B) several errors. I think he's a victim of a narrative at this point

It will be interesting to see what happens. I'd say it's about 50/50 now as to whether he stays or goes.

This may seem like a dumb question, but I don't think I've ever seen it ask or the subject even mentioned. If a player on the 40 man roster is traded must he remain on the 40 man roster of the new team?
He would have to go through waivers to be removed, so, generally, yes.

Yes, or be exposed to waivers. Once you’re on any 40 man roster, you can’t be taken off without every other team getting a chance to claim you and add you to their 40 man roster. If no one claims you, then you can be optioned down (or if you have enough service time, you can declare FA).

Thanks guys. I didn't think that a trade would change his 40 man status, but wasn't sure.

Starting at SS tonight. Gotta get his bat in the lineup when he's on one of his heaters I guess

I suspect it's more about letting Arroyo have his scheduled day off. Dalbec wasn't in the original lineup. He was only inserted when it became necessary to move Kike to the outfield to replace Yoshida.
