I miss Demolition Derbies and Figure 8 racing (mostly from Islip, NY) and Australian Rules Football, that ESPN2 used to show

What do you miss?

My good friend 53 year-old Johnny Klein from Bay City, Michigan is (as far as I know) the reigning World Champion in Barrel Jumping. He won in 1989, and they haven't had a World Championship since...

A few years before the whole craft beverage thing took off, he brewed and semi-succesfully marketed JUMPIN' JOHNNY'S ROOT BEER in and around Bay City - Featuring real cane sugar before featuring real cane sugar was a thing. I think I may still have the world's last un-opened bottle somewhere...

I have long said that the people who run speed skating should take on barrel jumping. Speed skating without barrel jumping is like track without field...

Survival of the Fittest was (I think) a WWoS staple that us PNWs could get behind!

Short track speed skating with barrel hurdles. That would be awesome.

I'd love for them to bring back the "Games People Play" show with updated games. That's the show that gave us Mr. T and the world's toughest bouncer competition.

Whatever happened to ESPN showing the Strongman competitions? Guys named Magnus. Squatting platforms with showgirls on them. Throwing kegs around. That one where they had to hold axes at shoulder height with their arms straight out. And the best part was when they would show the tiny 5 ft 90 lb women these 6'7 350+ lb behemoths were married to, screaming at them to win. They were like teacup Yorkies barking at a Rottweiler.

I wish like hell I got a channel that showed hurling. It's been a good 20+ years or so since I was catching matches on some obscure cable channel and haven't really seen it since.

They are on CBS Sports Network now (221 on DirecTV).

I feel like I've posted this before, but footie is still on TV. Fox has the US rights, and typically airs one game live every weekend on FS2 and another 2-3 per weekend on Fox Soccer Plus. Then they re-air those games at various times during the week, usually at better air times than the live broadcasts times of 11:30pm, 2:30am, or 5:30am Eastern.

where I was last at
When I was a lad we had a show on TV, Saturday afternoon around 5pm, called ABC Wide World of Sports, that delivered niche sports, that outside of Olympic years, you never saw. And they showed quirky stuff like, wrist-wrestling from Petaluma, Ca, cliff diving from Acapulco, Candian football, demoltion derbies, drag-racing from Christopher St. It was must see TV that consistently delivered the thrill of victory and agony of defeat.

One of the best events on Wild World of Sports was motorcycles on ice. Think dirt bikes with spikes or nails sticking out of the tires.
