What's going on with Rodriguez?

It's the double. He's given up 41 this year. That's 8 more than his previous career high and if you even out PA, it's 3 more than any other season over the course of 672 PA.

It's more pronounced since 2018.

2018: 1 double every 31.3 PA
2019: 1 per 28.6 PA
2021: 1 per 16.4 PA

HR rates were 1/34.6, 1/35.8, 1/35.4.

Doubles are obviously a product of BAbip, I'm not sure how to isolate out ISO from luck though.

I don't have any point, just that he's given up a ton of doubles, like almost twice as many.
Too me it's almost completely due to the current statuary playing the outfield. Compare the range of Benintendi, Bradley and Betts that Ridriguez enjoyed earlier in his career to the current group of Verdugo, Hernandez, Renfroe, Schwarber, Cordero, Martinez, et. al.

3/45 would be great, but there’s no way that’s going to be his best offer. In the unlikely event that he can’t get a 5+ year deal, he’ll take a one year deal, so offering the QO is a no-brainer.

One thing to note is that he has been considerably worse, unbelievably bad or unlucky, with guys on base. His K-BB% drops from 23% to 16.5% with guys on base and then down to 13.2% with runners in scoring position. His BABIP rises to .400 with guys on base. This seems fluky to me but determining if he has a fixable issue or was just extremely unlucky when pitching from the stretch would be the determining factor to me. I would definitely extend a qualifying offer and see what would be needed to get 3-4 year deal.

He threw a pristine inning today when the team needed him most. Agree with the posters above, with his peripherals and the market for pitching I’d be shocked if they don’t give him a QO.

I think so, especially considering his age. But he seems like a guy you’d want around for awhile, especially considering that Eovaldi is a FA after next year and Sale has an opt out. With Houck and Whitlock potentially filling out the back of the rotation on the cheap, there is the potential to spend some money on a starter and I’m not sure what the better options are.

Who's available that's either better - or similar that can be had for a better price? Jon Gray? Kluber? Anthony DeSclafani? I really doubt Bloom's going all-in on Rodon or Ray, and I don't want to ink Scherzer or Syndergaard to the type of deal they're going to command.

I think Rodriguez is the best pitcher available at the price I suspect Bloom is willing to pay.
