Liverpool was so awful in the last ten minutes that I really don’t think an extra minute would have mattered.

This is shaping up to be a real shit sandwich of a weekend for my sporting interests.
This Liverpool team not taking home a major trophy this season is incredibly disappointing.

He was really, really good for the most part. Blowing on time is very continental European.

Carvajal should have been booked early and that would have made some difference I. Letting Diaz run at him. Vini Jr. also needed a simulation card.
I’m speaking only for the last few minutes. Thought he called it well during the rest of the game. Personally, thought Liverpool lost this by not scoring in first half.

California. Duh.
Well, the good news is the last time they had to collect the runners-up medals after losing to Real, they won it the next year.

My thoughts…

  1. That may be the best goalkeeper performance in a final I have ever seen. Courtois earned that win.
  2. Trade Courtois out with anybody else, Liverpool win 3 or 4-1, especially once they get their feet.
  3. The referee was exceptionally good. His biggest mistake, not carding Carvajal, had a tangible effect in how Diaz attacked him. I do think that was egregious.
  4. Klopp blew it by not adjusting at halftime. When he started making subs, he took the wrong guy off in Diaz (should have been Mane). Liverpool should have started swinging crosses in like crazy.
  5. Trent switched off for a single play and cost his side the final. It’s really that simple.
  6. Vini Jr. is an incredible talent, but he’ll never be a good player for me until he rips the ugly side out of his game. Not carding him for his swan dive on this stage was horrifically enabling. He should have been punished and humbled with the entire football world watching.
  7. Keita’s exceptional talent should be relegated to the FA Cup. He’s far too inconsistent to be relied upon in big matches. You can’t throw the dice and take the 15% chance that he’s going to have it on a given day.
  8. AFCON significantly contributed to Liverpool’s lack of real silverware. Salah was a ghost from the second he got back, especially so after the last WC qualifiers. Mane wasn’t great, either. They essentially won out in EPL with a single draw, but if either of those guys is on some sort of form (other than “too exhausted to play” the draw doesn’t happen. Mo didn’t need to (nor could he possibly have) play to his pre-tournament standard, but he was at or below replacement from March-on.
  9. Thank you for your service, Sadio. Adios.

Watched the match with friends. The extra half hour of pregaming plus second half stress drinking…was a lot.

Liverpool played well. They got the ball in dangerous areas, they created a number of great chances, they won 1v1 defensive battles in key spots (Konate!), and limited Madrid’s counters. Except once. That’s the limitation in Trent’s game these days. He has to become a more complete defender to reach the peak.

Liverpool easily played well enough to win - but just didn’t take their chances.

Courtois was great and is easily MOTM.

Agreed that TAA had an awful game. One brilliant cross in with a ton of bad ones and giveaways. And at fault for the winner.

Thought the ref was good.

Keita should be fired into the sun.

And the only misstep was the Diaz sub. I’d have gone with a front 4 there - taking off Henderson.

Real are an incredible team. To be outplayed in four consecutive CL matches and to win all four is quite the achievement.

Andy Robertson .. who’s family and friends were among those turned away - said the stewards/cops claimed they had counterfeit tickets. Said tickets had been provided by Robertson himself.

UEFA originally claimed the 35 minute delay was due to Liverpool fans arriving late which was completely false as they had been queuing up for hours. Then they claimed it was crowd control or some such nonsense. The cops proceeded to pepper spray fans who were decidedly unhappy about being turned away. It should be noted that no Real fans were turned away.

Liverpool have demanded an official investigation into the UEFA fuck up.

The thing about the "Liverpool fans arrived late" PR spin is that why would that be a reason to delay the start of the game? Like if all the Liverpool fans had somehow overslept, they wouldn't delay the start of the game for that.

UEFA knew they fucked up, so they had to give the LFC supporters a chance to get into their seats, but they didn't want to admit that it was THEIR fault the Liverpool fans were not there, so they had to just say the supporters were late.

From various reports, it looks like there was a somewhat significant sale of fake tickets to Liverpool supporters. It also looks like for whatever reason Liverpool fans were restricted to one entrance. It’s hard to see if the same was true on the Madrid side. UEFA clearly screwed up by allowing such limited access points and then confounded that error by blaming late arriving fans. Obviously a lot of info needs to come out still, but it is a really disappointing situation and one that could have led to much, much larger problems. I do feel for those fans stuck outside, regardless of the validity of their tickets. Just an unfortunate situation all around, and one that UEFA will need to answer for.

This is a good summary from a reporter on the scene, with further analysis in terms of the context of French policing lately. Honestly, it is an utter disgrace that a French government minister should parrot the official UEFA line here, and sickeningly reminiscent of how HMG responded to Hillsborough. Meanwhile all the usual sewer dwellers emerged to dig up the 'Always the victim' bullshit.

I’m trying to withhold judgement till the facts are out, but my gut is telling me this will look worse and worse for UEFA and the organizers. Given what we know, I’m a little surprised that things didn’t get more out of hand.

I just don’t understand why the problems weren’t universal. There’s no reason for UEFA or Paris police to be out to get Liverpool. Why were Madrid fans able to enter without issue? Bad luck?

The main problem seems to have been the Madrid fans were entering the stadium via a wide open concourse - whereas the Liverpool fans were funnelled into a tiny entrance lined with cops and local rifraff (according to Reddy) trying to get in without tickets.
