Do I remember correctly that sometime in the early 80's he was rumored to be the Sox new manager? Maybe during the '84 offseason when they went with McNamara?
I always rooted for them, because they were in charge of Job 1 whenever we failed, but sadly they too came up short in taking care of that responsibility, except in 1980, but Whitey was gone by then.
But I have a best friend who is a Cardinals fan, and he looks back on the Whitey era the way we now look back at the Tito era.
I don't know about the early 80s (too early for me) but he was definitely a candidate for the job post-Kevin Kennedy in the 90s. As a I recall, he turned down the job and it eventually went to Jimy Williams.
Looking at his Wikipedia page, I had forgotten or never knew that Duquette tried to hire him as Red Sox manager after 1996; according to the page he rejected the Sox. He never managed again so I guess he preferred not managing to managing Boston! Red Sox got Jimy Williams instead.
Sox also tried to hire him to be Kerrigan's bench coach, and he turned that down too: "Every time we'd lose three or four in a row, the Boston press was going to say (Kerrigan) is going to get fired and I'm going to take over. I just didn't want to get into that.... I love Boston. The lobster is great. But I'm not going."

Whitey also played a big part in breaking the cocaine hold on the Cardinals in the early 80s, primarily by trading Keith Hernandez. Bill James has written extensively on this topic.
His teams are the main reason I rooted for the NL in the ASG even though my #1 was the Red Sox

He would have continued the story anyway, but the baseball stars aligning so he could tell the entire story in one at bat (which he acknowledges at the end) makes it so much sweeter.
