Did not like seeing Chavis in this - probably a fair deal from a value-for-value perspective (depending on PTBNL). Would probably have preferred a rental RP rather than taking on Robertson's salary for next year (and presumably lower acquisition cost for rental), but maybe this was best deal available. And it does help us improve in two areas.

Edit: And I don't believe for a minute that Devers is part of deal. NFW.

Unlike the Devers thing, this seems plausible. I won't love it, but it's plausible. Don't understand why they're getting the cash, though.
This would be plenty stupid for the Sox long term. White Sox might end up having the best farm in a long time.

I wonder what value Bryan Mata has, more than holding his own as an 18YO in Greenville but very far away. They type of arm D Dom won't be afraid to move. The type of move a ChiSox team should be looking to make.

The Sox Prospects podcast today said the white sox asked about Mata last winter and the red sox said no way.

And FWIW, they also said that while Moncada was obviously on the table that Devers was completely off limits during those discussions.

Historically I'm pretty sure Bruce Levine has been less accurate on trades than flipping a coin would be.

In other words, Dombrowski wouldn't give up the moon, so they'll take a lesser package from the rival team as a fuck you to Boston.

Losing Frazier basically forces the Red Sox to overpay for mediocrity. This is looking like it's going to be a rough trade deadline.

This is 2x wrong.

You can bet the farm that the White Sox didn't take a "lesser package" from anybody, nor did they give a "fuck you" to Boston (why would they?). The Yankees offered more, that's all.

And I see no reason to think the Sox will "overpay for mediocrity." What they already have is not that far from mediocrity. There's even less reason to overpay for a marginal upgrade than there would have been for a substantial one. Dombrowski is an aggressive trader, but I've seen nothing to suggest that he's the kind of reactive, undisciplined trader who would make a shitty deal because the one he wanted fell through.

The MFY have a much stronger farm system so not much BOS could do if MFY got aggressive.

Source: Red Sox are not close to deal w White Sox for Todd Frazier. And as of tonight, they are not close to deal for another third baseman.
Here comes NICK PUNTO to man the hot corner!

How about Josh Harrison?

Reasonable contract, good on-base skills (.352 OBP this year) with some speed, positional flexibility, under contract through 2018 (7.5 this year, 10 million next year) with two club options in 2019/2020.

And, he could hit lead off with Mookie moving down to a run producing spot?

Harrison
Pedroia
Benintendi
Betts
Bogaerts
Ramirez
Bradley Jr.
Moreland
Catcher

Pirates are 6 games out but with Starling Marte back from his suspension, so it is unclear which direction they'll take as they approach the trade deadline, but I'd at least check in.

red sox will still be looking for a 3b: have considered lowrie, harrison, prado (dl now), flores, asdrubal, rivera, solarte, freese, others.

So in other words they are looking at a pile
Of garbage. Also none of those guys do anything to help their biggest problem which is power

The problem is performance at third. Power would be nice but if all we can get is an OBP guy, it's still an improvement.

Solarte is not a terrible answer---345ish OBP, a little power. good contact hitter, better vs RHP (so could use Marrero against some LH, if he stayed up).

I mean, not going to be a foundation guy or exciting but avoids having a black hole there offensively.

Or the Yankees just offered the better package.
Fair enough; I recant and hope you're both right. I mean, obviously Frazier wasn't the franchise cornerstone that Sale is, but...seeing that other team get better when your team is in rough shape is hard to swallow. It kind of reeks of classic Yankees 11th-hour swooping-in and that's what I'm reacting to. I didn't even think they needed a 3B, not the way Boston does.

Doesn't mean a deal wouldn't happen but....

Dave Dombrowski still makes a face like he drank sour milk when the Padres come up. Be surprised if he makes a deal with A.J. Preller again.

You're right that there are no real power hitters in that group, but they're hardly "garbage". Solarte, Harrison or Lowrie would make us better. Flores might; he's been a better hitter on the road this year, and he's young and possibly on the up escalator. I'm not crazy about Cabrera or Freese, but even they might be upgrades over Holt/Marrero.

Eh Lowrie doesn't move the needle. He's also a stone cold lock to get hurt again. Pass
