If he's good over the 2/50 contract, I have no trouble believing he'll be able to get 2/30 or better.

Of course, but the point is that there's no guarantee he will be good (or healthy). If he isn't--which is a pretty plausible outcome for a pitcher in his mid-30s--he loses the gamble.

Or just this makes him easier to trade for younger and cheaper players.
Perhaps, but there seems to be a mutual like here. Hughes barely missed his bonus, Twins offered is anyway, he declines, Twins sign him to an extension.

Sure they could trade him, but in all likelihood, if they did, it wouldn't be until all-star break or next off season

I think Hughes realizes Target Field is ideal for him. He's a flyball pitcher and needs a big ballpark, so it's a perfect marriage.

Apparently it'll be Joe Kelly who will be our "top of the rotation ace".  http://nesn.com/2015/01/red-soxs-joe-kelly-predicts-hell-win-american-league-cy-young-in-2015/

Whatever.  I like his attitude and aim.  I hope he surprises every single one of us other than himself and does it!

It's probably worth noting (imo) that this is being said by a guy sitting in the the odd man out chair if we were to acquire a starter, and who is essentially staring at the crossroad path his career can take in terms of future financial earning power.

That said...gotta love it. I'll definitely be rooting a little harder for him now.

A buddy of mine who is a lifelong Cardinal fan predicted (right after the trade) that Kelly would win a CY with the Sox.  Ballsy prediction by Kelly.
It's great- it means he at least has high expectations of himself and has been/is working towards achieving those goals.  Fuck yeah!  Joe Kelly.

As noted by Dave Cameron last ThursdayRick Porcello isn’t necessarily the pitcher one conjures up when endeavoring to identify an obvious No. 1 starter for a postseason contender. ZiPS is optimistic that he can at least fake it for the time being, however. Despite having never posted above a 3.2 WAR in any season, Porcello is projected to produce a 3.5 WAR for Boston in 2015. This is unusual, of course. Projections systems are marked, if anything, by the application of regression to a player’s performances. To project a career year, then, is by definition atypical.

Dan Szymborski thinks Porcello.

And now this? He looked good in one session in February. We knew he had great stuff. This is not new, he will have days he looks awesome. This is just a "best shape of his life" story.

I agree. That story read like one of hundreds others over the years covering hundreds of other gifted, but incomplete pitchers, (Clay Buchholz being the most recent Red Sox version). For me, the telling quote was by Napoli: “He has a really good fastball. He just needs to be able to locate it. He’s got a good curveball and changeup. Of the five starters, he might have the best stuff of everybody. He’s just got to put it together.” Locating the fastball is what separates the elite from the average. "Putting it together" is a polite way of saying "if he can ever live up to his promise."

That said, and as we've seen with Clay, things can click, even for half a season or so. Hell, it even clicked for Kelly himself with the Cardinals in 2013 — going 9-3 with a 2.28 ERA in 15 starts.

On the plus side, everything I've heard about him is that like Gomes or Millar or Peavy, he has plus-plus-locker room chemistry intangibles. I wasn't in the least bit surprised to see the picture of him and Hanley mugging for the camera over the HBP from a couple years back.

Wow... I guess you didn't get the tongue in cheek excitement- jubilation there.  Yeah, obviously it's a Spring Training puff piece.  That said, I'm pretty excited about him and if he "can", as Napoli stated and everyone knows... stay consistent, he'll be potential ace candidate along with Porcello and Buchholz too.  Things break right for those 3 and they'll be great (and yes, I know that can be said about any ML starting pitcher)
