Wifi Connection Issue

So I have a standard comcast router. Right now I am plugged into the ethernet on the laptop and it's moving along nicely. The laptop is in the same room as the router. The connectivity shows 5 full bars at all times.

If I take the ethernet out and just use wifi, my connectivity gets inconsistent, slow, laggy, up and down. I don't think it's the signal from the router because my phone is connected to wifi in my apartment and no real issues.

I have a refurbed computer I bought online that's over a year old so I certainly can't rule out something to do with the hardware in my laptop. Wondering if any of the smart people here have any advice in terms of just what I can check before I assume the computer is bad (or maybe the wifi coming out of the router is).

Only other info I know to add - I only have 2.4GHZ connectivity, I went into the 10.0.0.1 screen and I don't see any ability to get to a 5 GHZ connection (or if my laptop is even compliant). The channel setting is set to automatic, but I'm not sure if I went manual what I'd change it to.

Anyways, any help greatly appreciated.
