The final check box for Venable before he gets a managing gig next winter. Same with Lombard in Detroit.

Was Pedroia a dream? Do we have any idea if he wants it or would be good at it?

Pedroia: Bench Coach comes off more like the Varitek: Manager fanfic/wishcasting that a Gammons column ("nine home grown All-Star starters in 2024") is more likely to toss out as speculation.

Not that he may not take the managerial route, but I suspect he'd be offered something else in the organization if interested. Even if it was as a Spring Training guest, just to get his feet wet, transition into working with players as a teacher and coach, to stay in the Sox orbit until he gains experience.

I was basing my good opinion of Pedroia as a bench coach on the remarks a number of his teammates have made about how helpful he was about what they were doing wrong, whether batting, base-running, etc.

Great! His brother, WInston, is the running backs coach (and all-time best nickelback) at Boise State. I get to pull for both Venable brothers as coaches.

Meant to put this in the original post: I'm mildly surprised at this, as the rumor was Cora would stay internal with Ramon Vazquez or Carlos Febles. If they wanted to go with a runner-up candidate, I would have thought it would be Fuld (although many people panned my reasoning for Fuld in the other thread, with good reasoning).

Pedroia's still under contract as a player. I don't think he can become a coach until that is resolved. My guess is he's not interested in being a coach, at least not now. Wouldn't shock me if he's in the same place that Varitek has been since he retired...preferring to be available for his kids (11, 8, and 6 years old) than spending 6-7 months away in a dugout.

Countdown to "maybe he can retire as a player and pay him the same salary to be a coach" comment begins: . . . . . . . NOW
