Unbelievable run. Third place team in their group, then France/England in the quarters and semis. What an incredible performance.

Say what you want about her (and we all do), but Jill Ellis becomes the first manager to win the Women's World Cup twice.

Dutch GK deserves a lot of credit for keeping this to 2-0.

Awesome run this year, but can't help but think how much harder the road will be 4 years from now.

Honestly, that's the thought I had 4 years ago. You could see the progress other sides were making then.

Winning this one in Europe, going through 4 European sides in the knockout rounds, is very impressive.

Mallory Pugh, it's up to you now.

Golden Boot and Golden Ball for Rapinoe. And will surely be one of the players picking up the trophy. Basically a huge middle finger to Trump.

They're already wearing the 4 star jersey.

I thought the US women would be reeled in. But they just smoked the European champions and should have won by more.

They’re fit, they have size and speed (look at their advantage over the Dutch, the tallest nation in the world), they work together, and they give nothing on technique. They’ll continue to be good for a long time.

Do we get a bye into the CONCACAF 2020 Final? That semi is going to be a little stressful (for me at least), if we don't.

Never understood why FIFA hands out such a small trophy compared to other sports.
The men's trophy is solid gold, so it can only be so big. The women's cup is gold-plated silver, and is taller than the men's one, but I'm guessing they didn't want a big size difference between the two.

The Jules Rimet Trophy was also tiny (“it’s 12 inches, made of solid gold, and it means England are the world champions”) so it set a precedent.

I quite like it, not everything has to be the Stanley Cup or Ol’ Big Ears.

Leave it to Edelman to get his name up on the screen because of a USWNT win.

They didn't present it because she wasn't there, and I don't think Fox ever announced it, but Lucy Bronze won the Silver Ball for the tournament, placed between Rapinoe winning the Gold and Lavelle the Bronze.

This, for some reason, is the pic that Bleacher Report tweeted. WTF? Can anyone explain it?

It said "One Nation, One Team. For the USA"

How do you put Kobe in that? What was the standard to appear in that image?

Lots of close games but in the sixteen knockout/elimination games only the first went to penalties. I think that’s good for FIFA, because the VAR on the line thing could have spoiled a penalty ending.

Question on radio this morning---if the PK was given for "dangerous play" why wasn't the penalty an indirect free kick?

Not that I really care, I'll take it, but they were wondering.

Because of the contact with the player.

FIFA Laws of the Game - Law 12, Page 113 (https://www.fifa.com/mm/document/affederation/generic/81/42/36/lawsofthegame_2010_11_e.pdf)

Playing in a dangerous manner involves no physical contact between the players. If there is physical contact, the action becomes an offence punishable with a direct free kick or penalty kick. In the case of physical contact, the referee should carefully consider the high probability that misconduct has also been committed.

It was in the box
That doesn't matter. You can have an indirect in the box.

Gotcha. The way these guys were talking is that if it's "dangerous manner" then by definition it's no physical contact, and no PK. But Fox said that's what was called. Maybe there was something lost in translation. Because the Fox folks were making a mishmash of the rules the whole tourney.

Huh. I've never seen that.

I shouldn't answer futbol questions.
The most common situation these days is when a keeper touches an intentional backpass with their hands - the penalty is indirect free kick at the point of contact, even if inside the box.

England vs Cameroon in the R16 had a big such moment. Cameroon felt hard done-by, because the "pass" was arguably more of a deflection than a pass and I've certainly seen it let slide. But it wasn't a "wrong" call, per se. It resulted in an indirect kick (so it had to be touched before being shot, and once touched, the defenders could charge at it). It's rare that such a call is made at a point so close to the goal (usually a GK error like that will be more on the periphery of the box), but while it's an uncommon event, it's not super rare.
