Totally agreed overall though: a truly amazing time to be a Boston sports fan, particular one who moved to the Bay Area at age 17 and picked one local team to fall for — the lovable, sadsack Golden State Warriors. If you had told me ca. 2001 where my three teams (Sox, Pats, Warriors) would be now, I'd have been highly amused.
I moved around a ton as a kid, fell in love with the Sox when I lived in Maine from 85-88 and carried it with me. I was born into Saints fandom for the NFL and have the Blackhawks as my NHL team. Needless to say I lived through some rough years as a sports fan from the 90s->2004. Then went on a hell of a run

Red Sox - 2004, 2007, 2013
Saints - 2010
Blackhawks - 2010,2013,2015

Plus obviously some good playoff appearances

Really? You guys want to risk Mookie getting hurt to keep JBJ's bat in the lineup? This isn't a video game where you just plug a guy in and because he experience points at 2b he will be just fine. He just had one of the best rf seasons EVER. I mean only the real Babe Ruth, (not he TBS Bregman "Babe Ruth of the week", or the late 90s Fox Jeter "Babe Ruth ") the actual real Babe Ruth. had a better WAR season in RF and you want to move the guy? No to cf, but to 2b?

Do you switch 86 Bird to the 4 in the finals because Wedman has been hot?
Do you bump Orr up to LW to get Vadnais more ice time?

After all the miraculous stretches we've seen from Pearce and the excellent play from Moreland, you want JDM trying to catch throws from Devers or Nunez?
I dunno. JDM doesn't strike me as a particularly worse athlete than Pearce or Moreland, and I don't really think it's harder to catch a throw from a teammate, than a line drive from a MLB hitter.

first world problems who to sit though.

It sure has. Last night my 10 year old daughter asked if it was possible that the Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots and Bruins could all win their respective championships this season. I said it was unlikely but certainly possible. Damn it is a great time to be a Boston sports fan!
I was hoping we'd have a chance to see all 4 teams play on the same day (and wondering if that's ever happened?). There was a good chance this year, but it didn't line up. Celtics don't play on a Sunday until 11/11 and even though the Pats have a Monday night game in the mix, the other teams aren't playing that day. We will get the Sox, B's and C's on Saturday the 27th though.

No Nomar in 2004 was weird. Pedrioa hasn't been a part of this team all season. And he's been a meager player for a few years as it is. I can't say I've thought about him very much during the playoffs, if at all, unless the camera showed him.
If the Sox win it all, Pedey 2018 may go down with Nomar 2004, Trot 2007, and Youks 2013 as "beloved franchise players who shuffled off their mortal Red Sox coil to usher in a new champion."
He's been both productive (above average OPS+) and a reliable starter (140+ games) for one of the past 5 years.

He can still contribute, but he hasn't been a major cog for awhile.
I don't get the elegaic tone we're all taking here. Pedroia had a 5.8 bWAR/4.9 fWAR season as recently as 2016, and another season almost as good in 2014. It's true, his knees limited him a lot in 2015, last season and this season, but he's been great in his recent healthy seasons, and better than average in his injured ones.

2016 isn't all that long ago. If this surgery works at all, I think he'll surprise some people next year.

Try planning a Red Sox based trip to Boston in 2004 with Nomah fah and away your favorite player only to see him traded just before you get there. On the plus side I did get to see Pedro’s last Fenway regular start against the Yankees and I told all who would listen that the Red Sox would win it all finally ( to much amusement - remember those days ?). I was in Boston again in 2008 for ironically enough the ASTRO conference and one more time in 2013. I got to see 5 games in 04 and 08 but none in 13. However I have a 100% record in that each time I have been to Boston the Red Sox went on to win the world Series or were defending champions

The only other time I’ve been to the states was a course in Madison Wisconsin in September 2010. The packers went on to win the super bowl I went to see the badgers who went on to win their division for the first time in 11 years and got to the rose bowl

If anyone wants to fly me in for mojo reasons I’m available for good luck hires ....

It's pretty clear what will happen in the NL park based on what happened in NL parks all season long. One exception: Martinez will be in RF for every game (not just 2 out of a 3 game series).

Why overthink it?

Cora will go with the best match-ups to decide if Benintendi, Bradley or Betts sit.

Looking at the Dodger's seasonal pitching stats, the only thing that stands out to me is:

RHP vs RHB: 4.06 K/BB
LHP vs RHB: 4.32 K/BB

RHP vs LHB: 2.92 K/BB
LHP vs LHB: 3.32 K/BB

The Brewers stats

RHP vs RHB: 3.33 K/BB
LHP vs RHB: 3.10 K/BB

RHP vs LHB: 1.84 K/BB
LHP vs LHB: 2.66 K/BB

I'm not saying he can't come back, I was just responding to someone who said it felt weird Laser Show wasn't out there. For me, it hasn't felt weird at all, it's been two years since he's been a key part of the team, which is actually a very long time.

In last year's playoffs he was 2 for 16 with an OPS of .347. I'm not yearning to see that. Brock Holt, a part time player, hit for the cycle in a game this year. More of that, less of the .347.

Current Vegas odds:

Red Sox 5-6
Celtics 6-1
Pats 13-2
Bruins 14-1

Back-of-envelope, that works out to on the order of a 1 in a 1000 shot. Certainly possible, but don't bet the farm!
I'm not certain whether the %s are correct but I'm coming up with a 1.5 in 1000 shot which is a 50% improvement!

AC starts Holt, and Devers, forcing Brewers to eith actually allow Miley to pitch to Mookie, JDM, Pearce, or bring in a RH pitcher vs RH lineup.

Yeah, I can't wait to have Cora start Kinsler and Nunez because Miley is starting and then he takes him out after 1 hitter.

We've thrown around the poker analogy with Cora. Would that be calling Counsell's Bluff? (no pun intended, but hey . . .)

Something tells me Cora is too smart to fall for any of Counsell’s gimmicks. Especially after Counsell already played that card in the NLCS. In Alex we trust.

For a lot of reasons, I want this to be the Dodgers. But somewhere on that list is the prospect of BEAT LA chants at Fenway.

Brings back the fondest of sports memories.

Selfishly I want the Dodgers. I’m in LA, and moving back to Australia in the summer, most likely for the next decade at least. Also, I have tickets to the three LA games.

Also, it’s classic.

And Vin Scully could come on Fox and reminisce about calling the 1915 Series.

The Sox could potentially have the following butcherer’s row of catchers faced in playoffs: Sanchez, Maldanado, Grandal.... for a team that likes to be aggressive, that’s a big deal.

If it’s the Dodgers we end up facing, can we get Nick Punto to throw out the first pitch?

I’d love it. I know you kick, but I love Vin.
I love vin as well. And I'm pretty sure he'll visit the booth in LA. Probably throw out a first pitch.
He called his first ever game at Fenway. BU-maryland football.

I’m fine with Mookie at second, just because I can see how that might play out...

“So the umpires back in New York are going to review the play. Looking at the replay — you can see right there, the cleat of Manny Machado comes into contact with the knee of Mookie Betts, and right there — Machado dissolved into a pile of salt the instant he came into contact with Betts. Because Machado initiated contact, I don’t think you can hold that against Betts. The call stands, Machado is out. Mookie Betts continues to do it all for the Boston Red Sox. We’re going to have a brief delay as the grounds crew sweeps up what’s left of Machado. You really have to think being a pile of salt is going to impact his market in free agency.”

I don’t know, a pile of salt would fit right in on the Yankees.

deep inside Guido territory

Mookie Betts will be taking ground balls at second base, as he has done all season, and is a candidate to play second base in Games 3-4-5 of the World Series in the NL Park. JD Martinez will definitely be in the outfield, Alex Cora says. #Redsox

Per Evan Drellich Sox are entertaining the idea of playing Mookie at 2B

I'm 44 years old and sometimes wonder why I still love baseball so much. If Mookie is going to play 2nd base in the World Series I'll feel like a kid again waiting for the game to start to watch him play.

It will obviously depend on a lot of things we don't know right now (starting pitchers, health, ballpark, etc), but at the moment I would be surprised if Mookie didn't get a start at 2nd.

Mookie and JD are going to play every game, and if JBJ/Benintendi are clearly the best options to stay in the lineup for whatever reason, I think Cora will let Mookie play 2nd.

Since we're talking platoon splits...

In the NLCS, LA started:
Kershaw, Ryu, Buehler, Hill, Kershaw, Ryu, Buehler.

Kershaw, Ryu, and Hill are all LHP, so it's likely that we will have two games in LAD against LHSP — probably Hill and Kershaw in games 4/5. Then again, neither Hill and Kershaw have much in the way of platoon splits — which is weird given that both feature plus curveballs — while Ryu has an pretty considerable reverse split. Buehler, the one RHSP, also has a mild split. This is a pretty great rotation.

...while Mil started:
Gio, Miley, Chacin, Gio, Miley, Miley, Chacin. Gio is now out.

Miley is a LHP. Man, I have no idea what Milwaukee would do pitching-wise in a World Series. Counsell has his work cut out for him.
