Xander suffered an apparent ankle injury after sliding into the Rays dugout trying to retrieve a ball he thew. He left the game and was helped off the field. Hopefully it's nothing too serious. He was playing at such a high level, tough to see that happen to him.

Left ankle injury according to Cora. They'll know more after evaluation and testing tomorrow.

That’s somewhat of a good sign isn’t it? They usually do X-rays on site so you’d think a break would’ve been uncovered.

Good point, he must have had an Xray already on site. But sometimes MRI's pick up things that Xrays don't.

Hopefully that means we’ll hear it confirmed as a bone bruise. Still would not be surprised to see X hit the DL.

I am concerned with how quickly it evolved. At first he was walking normally and then had to be helped off the field. Hopefully he did not tear a ligament or tendon.

If his first 9 games offensively is real, this is a big blow even with the best case scenario (missing 2 weeks with a mild sprain)

Well, he's from Newton, a lifelong Sox fan, and been in baseball broadcasting for 25 years. I'd reckon he's got some solid Sox sources. This is good news.
If the Red Sox were worried and scrambling to sign or trade for someone thats exactly the kind of information they would plant anonymously.

Why would they be trying to make a trade or sign someone? Bogaerts will be back, whether it's in two days, two weeks or two months. Lin and Holt can cover in the meantime.

They are also on the verge of getting Pedroia back and could slide Nunez over to short until Bogaerts is ready.

No way it’s his Achilles. I think he just banged it up a little, wouldn’t be surprised to see him hit the DL just to avoid anything lingering

Given last year's approach to health, I wouldn't be surprised if he decided to tough it out and instead perform poorly for 3 months as the injury lingers.

Devon Marrero's not hitting .650 with 11 homers is he? I'm afraid to look..
I still haven't figured out how BROCKHOLT fits on this team better than Marrero. Even if/when he's fully healthy, his skill set is nearly identically redundant to Nunez's (let alone Swihart's, Lin's, or Hernandez's). The only thing he really offers is that he bats left handed, except neither he nor Nunez have a large split over their careers. And with a Hanley/Moreland tandem at 1B, Holt is, at best, third up to be a PH on any given day. Coupled with the fact that Holt is making $1M+ more this year, I don't see how keeping him over Marrero's defense at the two positions where it's weakest on the team made any sense.

This scenario is exactly why we should have kept Marrero over Holt. If you lose an infielder (3B, SS, 2B) to injury, at least you have a very good defender at the position with Marrero. With Holt playing everyday, unless he’s hitting he’s a liability to the team. Let’s hope worst case scenario for X is a 10-day DL stint.

Holt's ability to play OF is a factor in his favor. And Holt at least was once able to hit adequately for a reserve, with 3 - 700 OPS seasons before last year's lost season.

If X hits the DL in any way, Lin's gotta come up, and he has to play at least half the time. You just cannot have Holt and Nuney up the middle on a daily basis. Lin has decent range and his arm will hold up at short if X is only out for a short stint. If X is out for a long time, the Sox have some serious issues, unless Lin comes up and sparkles with the glove and can at least not be a complete black hole at the plate. But I'd even take the black hole for good defense. You're not going to get that from Holt and Nuney.

1) I don't remember bad defense from Holt. Could you show me the numbers?
2) I wish there were a thread with only news about X. I keep checking this only to find discussions of who may or may not make up for his absence.

I believe this covered in the marrero trade thread - DD tried to shop Holt and had no takers

Right, but the Sox traded Marrero for cash or a PTBNL. They could have just saved cash (almost $2M) by non-tendering Holt and keeping Marrero.

How much more cash and how much better a PTBNL could we trade back to AZ to get Marrero back, bad leverage and all?

And while Marrero is good with the glove, he's useless otherwise. The pining over a AAAA utility player is a bit over the top, no?

If Bogaerts has to go on the DL, Tzu-Wei Lin is just as good a fill-in as Marrero would be.

Fair enough. Honestly, I assume he'd be at SS (because can you have Nunez at SS with stone cement hands AND little range?) and he doesn't have a very meaningful sample size of innings over there - only 214 innings, covering 2014, 15 and 16. His UZR over that time is 6.2, but likely meaningless for several reasons: he's older, his sample is tiny, and he lost an entire year last season, which cannot have helped. I think by biggest issue is, in a vacuum, Brock is a perfectly lovely utility guy who plugs in at SS in every once in awhile. But without Pedroia, we're not in a vacuum. Eduardo Nunez is the guy to his left (or right, I suppose), and he is TERRIBLE defensively. And I think the two of them together as a long term solution (which cross fingers the Sox don't need to worry about) is not good. Holt cannot make up for his defensive short-comings with a bat the way X can, or even the way Nuney can (and I'm not sold on Nuney being able to, either, frankly.)
