Different strokes for different folks, but I'm guessing there aren't too many folks stroking to this idea.

This made my morning.
This is the thing about SOSH. Dumbest post in a year leads to some hall of fame responses.

Sorry, but it's boring since 2018. I am the biggest Red Sox fan, but they need to slay the dragon again as in New York Yankees. For real no one cares about Blue Jay's, Ray's and Orioles. So for this run I hope Yankees just kick ass so the Red Sox front office and Fandom wake up again.
I root just as hard for the Yankees to lose as i do for the Sox to win. It'll be sweet when they get bounced from the post season!

I think what we witnessed after 2003 with regard to this team and the overall landscape of MLB and some of the characters that made up these teams, will not be seen again for a long, long time. It was a generational feat that really may not appear again to many of us over the age of 50 (like me). I'm still a fan of the game, and of the team, but not the same one that witnessed the many years of anguish leading up to 2004, and the same that loved the run this team has had this century. I am thankful I was a part of it and this site during those times, but I sure as hell don't want to see the yankees return to their prior success rate.

There are 12-year-old Yankee fans who know no title joy. And we’re supposed to wish this away? No. I want to live in a world where that kid leaves for college in six years and dispassionately just kinda becomes a Cardinals or Giants or Mariners fan because the Yankees never win.

We’re not fat, we’re big-boned!
No, no, no, we are festively plump!

Anywho, I think 2018 and 2021 did show the rivalry is still legit and undoubtedly we will have tense, exciting showdowns between the teams in the years to come, but I think that extra edge that we last saw in the late 90s/early 00s is, mercifully, gone.

Still, though, fuck the Yankees. Yankee Elimination Day is still a wonderful annual holiday, and may it come in earnest this year. I don’t care how likable Aaron Judge is or how unobjectionable the other players and coaches are. Keep your eyes on the ball, folks.

OPs point is ridiculous.

It is also ridiculous to think the rivalry cannot be very very exciting again. A 7 game series that goes 7 with two very good teams who fought like heck for first place...a fight or two on the field during the regular season...a couple of aces with a tendency to plunk team favorite players. It really won't take more than that. The problem is that ESPN and the MLB will jump all over that to the point where actual fans of the teams would rather fast forward the broadcast to find out who wins.
I mean, the latter happened in the 2003-2004 plot arc, with the loathsome Joe Buck and Tim McCarver doing all the commentating (except when we were blessed with Joe Morgan), and it really didn't ruin the drama and excitement at all.

The commentators are, with apologies to @Conigliaro's Potential , somewhat superfluous to the enjoyment of the game. If the contest has no stakes or is boring, there's little that the coverage can do to revive that, and if the contest is nail-biting then even poor coverage can't fully ruin it. It makes a difference, but it's an amplifier, not a determinant.

As for the OP's point - no, I don't want to go through that again. Once was enough. For those who went through 1986 or 1978 or even 1967, I'm sure that was enough for them too, after 2004. And while he could have framed it in a less sports-talk-radio manner, I think the fact that dozens of us so far have felt like it's worth our time to read the thread and then post about how much we disagree with him, suggests that the thread was at least worthwhile in the first place.

Yankee fans go to college? Trade school, maybe. Community College, I guess. I guess they could get a degree from the University of Southern New Phoenix.

You know what would be better?

The Yankees suck. For a long, long, time. They haven’t been a sub .500 team once in the past 30 or so years.

I want the Steinbrenner’s to lose the team to some shifty real estate developer, who then proceeds to take a beating in the market, and is forced to cut payroll to TB levels. Cashman leaves, all the talent leaves. And the Yankees average 97 losses per year for the next 25 years. They get a ton of top 5 picks over the years, but they never once “hit” on any of them. They’re not just prospects that fizzle out either. They just draft a bunch of angry trailer trash who keeps breaking their fists because they were punching walls or something.

Fuck the Yankees, past, present, and future.
This guy gets it. I can't understand rooting for the Yankees to beat the Astros. Don't get me wrong, I hate the Astros right now. But the Astros are the flavor of the month. They're on an upswing the last 5 or so years, but 15 years ago it was the As, 10 years ago it was the Rays, etc. They have nothing on the long-term, evil-empire nonsense that the Yankees have perpetrated on baseball for the last century.

I'm just glad I can continue rooting against the Yankees without feeling like my life depends on the outcome. It takes none of the joy out of it, frankly.

The content of the first post isn't worth discussion, beyond saying it is boring when the Red Sox suck and that has little to do with the Yankees. And 2021 wasn't boring to me, and I am pretty easily bored, but also pretty easily amused. And actually some of the Red Sox-Yankees games this year were pretty exciting, even though they didn't matter much on either side. And also everyone else in this thread has all this well-covered, including (especially) a Yankee fan in post #4.

But the second post in the thread is very very interesting to me. Post one is by Blizzardetc tagged at 11:46. Post two is also by Blizzardetc at 11:47 and reads "Any thoughts?" I'm trying to figure out if opening poster was just impatient that nobody had replied to their post within the first thirty seconds, or if they didn't realize that asking for thoughts was actually and totally implied by the very act of starting a thread and therefore felt the need to post again, this time with a specific invitation to the rest of us to reply to their post..

To be fair, this would be an epic game!

How heartbreaking would it be to have the Yankees so close to 0-162 only to have them squeak it out? Brutal. We'd all be screaming at our TVs to close the deal.

Let's be honest. If God granted all my wishes, the Yankees would finish 162 games behind the Sox EVERY YEAR.

Now... granted, it might make the rivalry a little stale, but isn't that a risk that we're all willing to take?

I just don't understand and conflict. I despised these fuckers in the 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's, 10's, and sure as hell still do in the 20's. I rooted against Judge every step of the way, because he's a MFY. He could go from the ballpark to a soup kitchen every night and I wouldn't give a shit.
Hatred is the only emotion I will ever have toward anything Yankee. And I respect every Yankee fan who feels the same way about the Sox.

I disrespect you for respecting Yankee fans!

Seriously tho: outside of our very good members here, I find myself hating Yankee fans far more than actual Yankees these days. When I read that there may be midges in Cleveland this week, I was reminded of not only Joba but Jeter and Rod swatting them away like petulant babies. I legit hated the fuckers on that team.

I will say this: when the Yankees won in 2009 (beating Pedro, sadly, who gave it one more amazing run), watching Yankee players joyously rush the mound was weirdly satisfying to me as a Sox fan because it was clear those guys actually appreciated winning, as opposed to thinking it was their goddamn birthright.

The only thing I like about 2009 is how the YES network and Yankee fans have retconned Arod, who carried them through that postseason, out of the story.
But, overall 2009 is still an evil ending to a baseball season.
It's like reading history in a way when you read of the Night of Lon Knives, and Ernst Rohm gets his it is weirdly satisfying this vile villain suffers. But, at the end of the day Nazism is stronger, and the evil grew. Yes in my analogy Arod is Ernst Rohm, and the Yankees are Nasizm.

So yeah get lost with the Yankees need to win garbage.
I will repeat if the Yankees went 0-162 for five straight years, and on the last day of the 6th year won to go 1-161 I would swear when I saw the score.

The Yankees winning a World Series is not going to push the front office to spend a shit ton of money, that's not how this ownership operates.

Leave that foolishness to the Yankees front office; the Red Sox won the WS in 2004 and 2007, then in 2008, the Red Sox and Rays played in the ALCS, those three events resulted in the Yankees going out and spending a quarter of a billion dollars to buy a WS title in 2009.

They have not been to a WS since, while the Red Sox have won two more and where two wins away from going to a third.

Leave the knee jerk reactions to those assholes.

Where you a fan in 2021? They beat the Yankees in the one game WC playoff, knocked off the Rays 3-1 and again were 2 wins away from going to another WS before their bats fell asleep, I'd say the fans were awake during that run and I'd hardly call that boring.

Ditto. That kind of all consuming, have to see every pitch of every game passion ended for me probably after 2008. As great as the championship runs of 2013 and 2018 were, they weren’t quite the same. And the existential dread of the MFY winning another WS is long gone too. Still can’t stand ‘em, still want to beat their asses whenever we play them. But don’t obsess over them anymore. Still love baseball, still have a fairly strong interest in the Red Sox. But I doubt any of that level of intensity returns in my lifetime (late 50’s now).
2013 and 2018 were very satisfying, but not particularly exciting. Neither of those playoff runs ever had the Sox in an elination game. Neither post season had the drama of the 2004 comeback or being down 3-1 against Cleveland in 2007.

I'll take the 2013/2018 path through the post-season 10 times out of 10. I found those games plenty exciting and stressful. Shit, Craig Kimbrel alone (Game 4 ALDS, Game 4 ALCS) caused me more stress than I felt during the 2007 ALCS.

They have lost the aura and mystique.

I view the recent (2001-current) iteration of the MFY much like hibernating locusts. Once "we" understood how to combat the threat by easing their access to a diet of older and expensive free agents, they morphed from an annual plague that fouled our world from April to October to more like a mild annoyance to be swatted away by mid-September.

But Kee-rist every generation (15 years +/-) those swarming MFers can blot out the noonday sun and create untold damage. They finally started to adapt to a new environment. We can not entirely forget the threat or we do so at our own peril.

Love the screen name.

I am rooting for Ukraine to win, Covid to lose, global temperatures to go down, The Canadians to lose, the market to go up, and the Yankees to fail miserably.

Not necessarily in that order.
Thank you. Been watching the Red Sox since 1975. I fell in love with them in 1977. George ' The Boomer ' Scott favorite baseball player. Cried in 1977 and 1978 as a kid. 1986 was bad as well. I just think them coming in last place 2 out of the last 3 years is unacceptable. This is the Boston Red Sox. That's why my theory that if the Yankees win, that might get Red Sox Nation and ownership going again with passion. I am very new here. You guys are much more knowledgeable than me and I respect that. I just think we all keep saying 4 WS since 2004, maybe we should try something different mindset? Also in time I hope I could become a loyal member of this community. I am very passionate about our Red Sox.

Welcome to the community. In the immortal words of Aaron Burr: “Smile more, Talk less”. Read the threads and get a feeling for what goes down as quality analysis around here. Your first thread was not well received, I think because it was more emotional than fact based.

Read the replies. Read them again. I don’t think anyone else here thinks the Yankees winning will have any effect on the fandom or the front office, but it will ruin many of our annual Yankee Elimination Day celebrations.

No love for Yankees, but not that much hate either! Red Sox can find mojo from other sources than a Yankees win!
There's always someone to get Sox fans fired up in years when they have a chance to do something. More recently the Astros, and IMO beating the Rays was pretty great. I can appreciate Blizzard trying to start some Yankees shit, but right now they aren't particularly likable or dislikable. I don't think the 2004 vibe will happen again until most of us who were there, and our institutional memory of what happened, are long gone.

Funny, if I had never moved away from Mass. I would probably feel exactly like this. But living far away from it all, I find I'd typically rather talk baseball with Yankee fans than Mariner fans, apart from a few close friends who have a long-time Ms connection. Maybe I should watch The Grand Illusion a few more times to help me understand it all.

1949 was one of several completely intense seasons in the rivalry. I was two years old and very tense throughout the month of September as New York and Boston went down to the wire. Yanks edged Boston in final two games to win pennant by one game. I almost shit my pants.

Things were different in 1978. We drank beer, smoked weed (as a few of the Sox were known to do) and hung on every pitch for three hours. Almost needed new underwear after that game.

2003-04 seasons were like one long torturous nightmare because the Yankees were being hunted down by a hungrier opponent.

The rivalry seems to recur every 25 or 30 years. I am almost in diapers again. Houston is really hateable. I sort of like the current Red Sox team, coaches, GM and fans.

It’s interesting to read this thread and think about the origin of my own Yankee hatred. Grew up in Western Mass and started following the Sox in 1967. Watching games on TV throughout the 70s, it was ingrained in my from my father that the Yankees were a thing to be hated, like the Soviet Union or the Viet Cong. He would say that the Yankees from 1936 to 1964 “ruined my childhood and then ruined my adulthood”. One year I remember him ecstatic because the Yankees had lost their opening game in Spring Training.
Put me in the hoping Yankees go 0-162 camp.
