Any chance the linesman on that side grew up on Merseyside?I don't know ifany of the calls have been wrong but he seems to have eagle eyes at spotting millimeter offsides unless it's Salah

That's a dream result. Thought Liverpool had a good chance of winning the game, but 3 goals and a clean sheet?

It is by no means over, but it's about as good of a start as we could have had.

Gotta believe Klopp lines up the midfield as defensive as possible for Tuesday. Probably looks like Milner, Wijnaldum, Can.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Clyne get a run Saturday to spell TAA, he looked outstanding against Sané today and should hopefully be rested Saturday

Amazing two halfes .. brilliant attacking football in the 1st and brilliant defensive football in the 2nd.

The Liverpool attack essentially died when Salah came off. You could hear the air coming out of the balloon. But they locked down the best offence in the country and didn't give them a sniff.

And TAA had the game of his life.

City didn't manage a shot on target. I thought TAA was exceptional having been targeted recently. Robertson excellent as always, Hull got robbed by only getting 8 million.

Best part of the Hull transaction was that Liverpool used Kevin Stewart as the makeweight, effectively nullifying much (if any) significant transfer funds from changing hands.

True - his hand may be force if Salah’s out, moving Oxlade-Chamberlain into RW and leaving those three as the healthy/eligible midfielders

I'd argue that Liverpool was actually better defensively in the first half when the press was on as opposed to the more laid back approach once Salah came out. City's defenders could not effectively pass out of the back and ignite a counter attack. Liverpool did the same thing in their win earlier this season.

The problem is the ability to maintain that press for 90 minutes, which is why the 4-1 lead in the league game became 4-3 late. Every Liverpool player was absolutely gassed the last 10 minutes plus stoppage time in that earlier meeting.

I personally liked seeing them be able to play a couple of different ways. Keeping a clean sheet was much more important than scoring again in the second half. 3-0 is a much better position going into the second leg than 5-2 would have been.

Until Salah went out I thought you should have pushed for the 4th and 5th goals to end the tie. You'll most likely win but 3-0 or the 3-1 you risked with the away leg still to play was too conservative, imo. City have had an awful time at Anfield for almost the entirety of the PL era. I don't even blink anymore at the typical screamer from distance. I'd have been tempted to press the advantage while you had City on the ropes. It's hard to argue with a 3-0 advantage but it looked like a complete thumping in the 1st half. Football is a funny game and you need breaks to go your way in this competition but if a few go the other way at the Etihad this could get very tight still.

City had their chances too, they just didn't convert. A fair result from that game would probably look like 4-2. Sane, in particular, was great at everything but the final touch.

Sane had a ton of space to operate but couldn't deliver the crucial pass at all. KVB looked like he was going to strangle him at one point. Looked like the game was a little too big for him.

I think Sane, Salah, and Firmino will have tons of space to work their transition magic next week as MC is forced to be even more aggressive. As someone said upthread, it’s over if LFC scores once.

I know the point you're talking about, and I actually agreed with the announcers that Sane was right to take that shot on. He was central, he wasn't being closed down, and he got into the box. He had a window in which to score, and he just missed it, but it wasn't a poor decision, just a badly executed shot.

KDB made his share of errors too, I think it was his pass that was intercepted that led to the counter and Liverpool's first goal. For a player who's probably one of the best dozen or so players in the world, his lack of brilliance was perhaps City's biggest problem. Well, that and Aguero's thigh injury, which may or may not keep him out from the return leg.

.
The scenario your talking about I agree with. It was the equivalent of a basketball fast break where the defenders run to cover the open shooters but leave the lane wide open for a layup. Throughout the game however, I thought Liverpool was comfortable giving Sane space and he had plenty of chances, but just couldn't make the right play.

Nope - that was Sane who made that weak crossfield pass that had no chance of reaching a City player that lead to Salah's opening goal..

On Sane - definitely the right decision to shoot - just missed the shot. Aside from that, TAA did an excellent job dealing with him. That being said, I thought he was poor overall. And agree with KDB - did not look his usual self. However, Liverpool - particularly Henderson - did a really good job at harassing him whenever possible.

Hoping for easy patients so I can catch most of the match......
Don't you have a Neuro-hygienist or something who can handle most of the actual brain cleanings leaving you to come in for a quick once over while the ref is pacing off a free kick? If not you should get one.

Could have been a foul on VVD, but it was marginal and he can't get caught 40 yards out of position like that. The goal came right through the space VVD vacated.
