All I can say is that if Mayer advances quickly enough to be theoretically blocked by X then that is a very good problem to have.
Kid had a brain aneurism his HS freshman year at 13, was told he might not walk again. Dream was to play baseball and he just finished pitching his senior year. Giants are his team, on top of everything else.I missed the introduction. What’s the story there?

Thanks. Stroke in high school -- so damn sad.Kid had a catastrophic stroke, was told he may never walk again. Just finished pitching his senior year.
Huge Giants fan.
X is going to probably have to move to 3rd at some point so if Mayer is pushing for the big leagues that’s a natural transition. All I can say is that if Mayer advances quickly enough to be theoretically blocked by X then that is a very good problem to have.
Okay, this may or may not have made me tear up a bit.
Thanks. Was curious about that. Between Casas, Downs, Mayer, Duran, and Jimenez, you’ve got some interesting position player talent in the farm system. Sure I’m missing others too.

If LSU P Jaden Hill is there I’d pay over slot for him. Top 5 talent but suffered TJ this year.So what are you guys thinking is likely for us at 40 at this point?
Likely I dont knowSo what are you guys thinking is likely for us at 40 at this point?
Line of the thread. Awesome.MLB really is the Billerica of professional sports drafts.
Having taken Mayer, we're unlikely to go over slot in the 2nd round. There's a lot of other teams picking guys for underslot deals; the Sox aren't going to be playing that game this year.If LSU P Jaden Hill is there I’d pay over slot for him. Top 5 talent but suffered TJ this year.
If Mayer takes slot money I’d think there’s room to go over at 40 especially if Hill is there(probably a moot point since I think he’ll go tonight)Having taken Mayer, we're unlikely to go over slot in the 2nd round. Forgive me for not knowing, but what is the leverage situation with Mayer? As in is there any sort of likelihood that he doesn't sign?Possible the Sox don't really know what Mayer wants, right? I guess they likely had a quick discusison pre-draft about expectations and perhaps also while on the clock, but this just doesn't seem like a scenario they did a ton of groundwork on.
I think that guys' numbers are pretty well-known. Even if we don't know what it is, and even if the Sox thought he'd be off the board, they know his number.Possible the Sox don't really know what Mayer wants, right? I mean no one would believe he’d go to college so he doesn’t have much leverage. But the Sox will do whatever it takes to sign him.Forgive me for not knowing, but what is the leverage situation with Mayer? As in is there any sort of likelihood that he doesn't sign?
Little I think---both because the slot number is so high, and because I do imagine they have a sense of it already. My point was that they likely haven't gotten quite as specific/committed around it (and the scenarios around it for, example, a likely over-slot guy like Hill later) given the improbability of this scenario occurring. But I really doubt it's much of a risk----the slot value is over $6 mil and it's really, really, really hard to make a case for turning that down and bearing risk for what will be for him what, three years?Forgive me for not knowing, but what is the leverage situation with Mayer? Forza Italia.I love the fact Mazzicato went 7 because I feared NY would take him with their first round pick. Can't imagine they would pass on an Italian baker's kid.
At #4, they know his number. You don’t draft a player at #4 who you don’t have an outline of an agreement with. They’ve done work on EVERYONE in the top 300. I read something back in late June about the Sox trying to manipulate their way into getting Mayer to fall to them. A player can give different teams different numbers.Little I think---both because the slot number is so high, and because I do imagine they have a sense of it already. A college junior picked that high only bears one year of risk (like Mark Appel) so it's a less bad choice for them. But still a bad one, imo.
IMax Muncy: * Born 8/25/90, drafted by A's in 2012 * Born 8/25/02, drafted by A's in 2021
As I thought I said in the post you quoted, the issue is less that they have no idea than that there are fewer discussions and more uncertainty---both about his true number and about the scenarios for later picks based on it. There is some gamesmanship to the 'ask' for all (as you seem to realize, noting that players give different numbers to different teams) and that is where I'd guess they are situated a bit differently here than if it were, say, Davis who they had many discussions with, we know. But that's just a guess. At #4, they know his number. You don’t draft a player at #4 who you don’t have an outline of an agreement with. They’ve done work on EVERYONE in the top 300. As far as leverage, he can go to college and play three years and try to move up, but there are an infinite number of positions below #4 and only 3 above it. The chances are slim that he’d turn in this lottery ticket for another one in three years.
I don't think that it's a given that Ford stays at C. His athleticism and hit tool carry at multiple positions and the jury is out on his C defense.Interesting to see Seattle draft a catcher in the 1st rd the same day their star catching prospect Cal Raleigh made his major league debut.
