Is Clark kind of getting the Barkley treatment from older WNBA ladies?? That’s great, who is the biggest shit talker?
Taurasi has publicly said, and I'm paraphrasing, she is in for a rude awakening when she enters the WNBA. Like most things - you can read it a lot of ways. It probably lands somewhere between jealousy and truth.

The bottom line is the NCAA Tournament is the pinnacle, in terms of national attention, for women's basketball players. The Olympics also being ahead of the WNBA. This fact has led to a lot of conversation about WBB athletes staying in school for the attention now that they can get paid. A lot of WNBA players and pro-WNBA media members have gone to great lengths to trash that take.

This is not the week to critique ESPN's coverage of the women's basketball tournament.
The game is growing really incredibly and I agree that people are leaning in hard. Maybe this is a better discussion for after the tournament but there is a discussion to be had about race and how we cover women.

I was at an event Friday night with about 150 white people standing around drinking with the game on silently in the background. One angrily saying how Geno didn’t even recruit Clark and all the narratives de jour. I did an informal survey. I asked people in passing if they knew who the winner of the game would play. Less than half did. Some thought UConn Iowa was the championship. Of those who knew it was South Carolina, I asked if they knew how many losses they had. Not a huge number knew. There was one woman of color there who overheard me and then came up to me telling me I was cracking her up. Today is a celebration of a sport I care about but I do think sometimes we miss the better story.

Stewart and Taurasi being assholes about Clark makes me hope she goes for 50 today.

The UConn players saying you can't be considered an all-time great unless you win a title, but not acknowledging that they played on absolutely loaded teams is ridiculous.

Seems to me that people like Clark because she bombs 3s and it’s as simple as that.

Yup. Taurasi played 2 years with Bird IIRC. That's like if Clark played with Bueckers.

If SC wins, is Staley consensus the 3rdGOAT?
I do think you can draw a straighter line from Summitt to Geno to Staley yes. And you can also sort of see how the passing of the baton seems to be associated with a surge in the sport.

Iowa will cool off, obviously. But five of Iowa’s points were on dumb fouls on Clark three point attempts. So, uh, maybe don’t do that?

Seriously. For once the right thing to do and the profitable thing to do have aligned for them. They are all WBB, all the time.

Anyway, South Carolina has really come out flat. Not seeing a lot of good movement. If it wasn't for their size and rebounding they could be down by 20.

I was watching a bit of Celtics earlier while taking the kid to urgent care (she's fine), and the nurse asked if I was watching "the Caitlin Clark game" and when was that, can they watch from the office, etc.

Some serious zeitgeist going on right now.

Yes but their size is part of their game plan. They know they’ll kill Iowa on the boards so they can afford to miss shots.

My grown daughter has never been a basketball fan.
She told me earlier that she rescheduled the massage she had booked for this afternoon so she could watch Caitlin.

This game is an absolute blast. It slays me when people who love basketball say they don’t like women’s basketball. This is just phenomenal stuff.

Re support for Clark

I wonder if there's some jealousy from some WNBA players who will never sniff that kind of $.
I sure that’s part of it. I’m sure Clark will do great in the WNBA but Taurasi was right when she said that it’s different than scoring against college players. Clark will face a sea of the best women’s players in the world, almost all of whom are significantly better than Nika Muhl, who did a really good job on Clark.

For sure, but she will also have much better teammates. Going up a level goes both ways.

Meanwhile, I am watching the Bird/Taurasi show/cast of the game and they are effusive in their praise of Clark. But lets keep talking about how they are jealous.

Rookies always have to prove themselves. And they mature. I don't follow WNBA, but has any college phenom flamed out in the WNBA?

South Carolina is so good and they are killing it on the offensive glass. Hard to see how Iowa can overcome it, other than Clark going crazy.
