i was thinking about just this thing today. so much is put on the playoffs as if it’s all that matters. watching this team operate at the peak of their sport every other night has been such a joy. i remember watching every game in the ricky davis days. this team is so fun and likeable and i appreciate them bringing a lot of joy. obviously i want them to win it all but it’s not everything
Might be worth noting that while the Celtics have of course won 17 championships, as of this year they have won 60 or more regular season games 14 times. Winning 60 has been historically more difficult than winning the title, at least for the Celtics.

Only rotation players who might sit out for Boston tomorrow nite in Milwaukee are Horford and Porzingis, each of whom is listed as questionable on the injury report.

Not sure I would have objected to the C's resting most of their frontline guys.

Two options:
1. Joe does the preseason thing where starters play hard and then sit the 4th.

2. They use it as one last hard game to prepare for the playoffs.

My money is on #1, but both are possible.

Just based on it being Milwaukee, I was guessing 2---and I agree both are quite possible

I don't know if it does or should factor into their calculus, but if they beat Milwaukee they are tossing the Bucks into the scrum for the 4th seed and may see them again in the second round (assuming the Celts and Bucks both advance, knock wood for the C's). Not that the Celtics are, or should be, afraid of the Bucks, but probably just as well to put off that encounter until the ECF if at all. Which is all to say, I won't be broken up if the Celts come out at half speed and literally the only thing that matters is avoiding injury.

Arm chair psychologist warning: Deciphering Joe’s tendencies throughout the year, I think he would believe that attempting to influence seeding beyond controlling their own destiny is beneath CJM and his squad. Like Ime’s squad, they’re not ducking anyone. However, his insane competitive nature, coupled with his stance on players (and coaches) swatting shot attempts after a whistle to prevent someone starting to feel comfortable, I really think there’s a part of him that would rather kick them when they’re down and assert some dominance.

.. but I suspect reason prevails in this situation and he’ll pull the starters four minutes into the third, giving them the opportunity to build confidence by either a) successfully maintaining a first half lead (foot on the throat), or b) putting together a good string of possessions after making some adjustments and wrap up on a positive note.

It's hard to see Joe liking the cultural vibe of going half speed and getting spanked as a last taste of the Bucks. The Cs win when they sit stars all the time because the players who do play, play hard. I don't think it's playoff intensity, but I think the Cs are feeling good and would be happy to give the Bucks a workout. They seem like they're having fun.

They easily could have lost to the Kings, and Mazzulla was fine with that either way.

I bet strongly that the starters do not close the game, even if it's close. I do think the first 24-36 minutes will be pretty intense.

They for sure could have lost, but they just had to score on like 3 of their last 10 possessions to keep it from being remotely close. At that point, Coach Joe would have looked like he was panicking. His hands weren't tied, but the really couldn't bring the starters back in there with a straight face. I'll be interested in what he chooses if it's a 5-point lead going into the fourth.

No KP, No Al against the Bucks tonight. Tillman starting, and we'll see Kornet and the newly signed Neemius Queta off the bench.

I hope this was the game where Joe told them to get all of the dumb shit that won’t work in the playoffs out of their system.

I heard on the radio broadcast of the game that the Celts most likely first round opponent is Miami. I wanted to puke. I think the sentiment on this board seems to be that with Porzingis we match up much better, Miami is struggling…etc. I don’t care. A series with Miami will be a nightmare. Spo absolutely knows how to gameplan against the Celts. He masterfully uses his timeouts to stop Boston runs. Miami legit doesn’t try in the regular season. They will give the Celts everything. Butler, Bam, Herro, scary Terry, Jacquez, give them multiple scorers they haven’t always had. Series is going 6 or 7

2 total free throw attempts tonight. NBA record. Fucking bizarre.
Three words : marc Davis sucks. He should never be allowed to ref a Celts game.. or any game for that matter.

calling fouls like it’s the 80s-90s all of a sudden seems like a dumb decision

In fairness, I think a lot of us thought the same about Brooklyn in the first round in 21-22 -- and the Celtics swept them.

But yeah, Miami in the first round is just not fun. On the other hand, I'd rather face them early instead of late?

The 1 seed should be able to literally pick its preferred qualified playoff opponent in the first round!

I posted about this in the other thread, but the evidence for this is literally just last season. They were clearly trying in the regular season in 2022, when they got the 1 seed. They were clearly just not that good in 2021, when they were the 6th seed and got swept in round 1. Not only are they having a mediocre regular season, they haven't exactly stepped up for big games or big moments. 1-5 against Boston and Milwaukee, 29th in 4th quarter net rating, 17th in overall net rating...etc etc etc.

Considering they're only 2 wins from not having to play elimination playoff games before playing a fully rested 1 or 2 seed (or not playing them because they lost, since anything can happen in those play in games), not trying in the regular season and just assuming that you'll win and no one you're facing just gets hot that night, is pretty fucking stupid for one of the best coaches in the NBA.

I don't think the team would have been there if it weren't for the national TV policy, and it showed.

When they showed Tatum mic’ed up saying that the next time the team traveled it would mean something, I kind of gathered that this game meant next to nothing to them.

We already saw this last year and in 2022, when they sent skeleton squads to road games in Milwaukee and Toronto late in the season, on annoying 1-game road trips.

This is why I don't think it's too much of a wild counterfactual to speculate that they would have done it again, if it weren't for the policies.

Where do you get that Spo isn’t trying in the reg season or assuming they will win? Butler, Adebayo and Herro all played 44+ min in their double OT win last night.

Yeah, they're trying. They're just not that good without Butler going supernova, and he hasn't been able to do that yet. He did it last year in the early rounds, so we'll see.

The play-in is a precarious place to be, and no one plans to be there. People forget how close Miami was to getting straight-up eliminated by Chicago.

It was basically the equivalent of what NC State did.

Most likely isn't the same thing as likely. It's still less than a 50% chance of it being Miami.

Edit: ESPN says 26% Miami 26% Philly 15% ATL 15% Orlando 11% Chicago 7% Other

I know I know....No KP, No Al, and Not a whole lot to be motivated about.

But I worry. The "New" NBA where you can hit people with Steel chairs has me worried. The Celts for as good and amazing they have been this year seem to seriously struggle with physical games. I think we are also one of the leading teams in FTAttempted vs FTs allowed (IOW we dont foul much generally and usually shoot more FTs then our opponents who do). (Cant seem to find the right stat combo to comfirm).

If the Regular season (where the Celts have dominated) becomes an entirely different fruit (apples to oranges) then 1. I am pissed that the NBA is tilting the field so much and 2. I seriously worry about their chances.

The Regular season should matter. The Product should be recognizable.

I also see where being more physical with Embiid and Giannis could be a good thing......but will they allow that? Or will this only impacts "Drives"....an area that would seriously impact the Celts?
And maybe this "reset" happens every year in the playoffs. But this year (the last qtr of the regular season) seems egregious.

Make me feel better.

Celtics offensive rating since they changed the officiating is about 126 which is absurdly good. the best ever.

As long as putting away the whistle decreases both offensive and defensive fouls, outside shooting teams should benefit. It will get harder to score at the rim without getting mugged, but setting screens will get easier and therefore shooters will be more open. That is the reason the Celtics have such a historically dominant offense.

1. I'm mildly concerned about the new 90's NBA, particularly for KP.

2. KP has started to adjust better at playing through contact and looking to score rather than just draw the foul.

3. The Celtics will get to mug guys like Giannis and Jokic, which is a big benefit. (Remember the missed foul on Jaylen that got Jokic a T and nearly swung the game in Denver?)

4. None of this relates to last night's game. You can't judge a team when they're playing at preseason speed and basically trying not to get hurt. They barely even went at Lillard for awhile.

5. Not getting hurt has value: just ask Giannis.

The Celtics, while being very skilled, are also a physically tough bunch. If we played the game on the playground with no refs, I'd imagine that they would take advantage of the lack of whistles and physically impose themselves on defense with the worst intentions too. There's a mental adjustment, but honestly part of me is happy that this new no-whistles standard is being test-run in the regular season. Our guys have seen it now. If it happens in the playoffs, they shouldn't be thrown for a loop.

I think none of this "new officiating" affected the last game. Celtics have made the decision to go through the motions since clinching and are unconcerned with regular season results now. These are NFL exhibition games.

So is this the day we go back talking about this team, like a rich man’s Clippers earlier in the year, peaking too early and losing their edge entering the playoffs?

They’re going to win the Conference by like 13-14 games, and these games mean nothing. “Peaking too early” would be the worst excuse ever. Who exactly is peaking right now in the East, anyway? The conference blows.

If the games mean nothing, why play the starters? I'd rather have Pritchard and Co. busting their asses than watch Brown and Co. sleepwalk through games (and risk injury).

Because the league requires them to, especially for marque matchups.

I for one am pleased that we are here debating the merits of our 62-win team taking games off at the end of the season. A lot of other fanbases would love to have this problem.

If they Celtics starters aren’t going to try, I question the value of running them out there at this point.

Guys we won the last two games by not getting anyone injured and getting some dudes more rest. These were victories. Tomorrow and Sunday will be the same thing.

At least we've got a G League Finals Game 3 to watch on Sunday actually it's Monday at 9pm. Huh. I guess it's an open night from the NBA's perspective. Cool.
