Fantastic. The reason to attend this thing in person is because it's a drunken mess and they're not selling alcohol. It's like the PGA Tour can't escape its inability to provide people what they want.
Fun fact, the TOUR actually does not make those decisions. The WM is actually run by an organization known as the Thunderbirds. They handle the build-out of the the hospitality, ticket sales, F&B, etc.

Also, I'm guessing you've never been there on a Saturday. It's an insane blend of 35k people there to watch golf and 215k people there to get hammered. Stopping alcohol sales almost certainly prevented no one from getting drunk that wanted to.

My assumption is that they curtailed alcohol sales because of the (presumably drunken) woman who fell out of the stands the day before and almost killed herself.

You may be right to consider this an overreaction. However, I’m not certain that “providing people what they want” indemnifies them from liability going forward.

Also, as was pointed out above, Tour doesn’t run the event.

Edit: Here’s more detail on why sales of alcohol were stopped:

https://x.com/MacroEdgeRes/status/1756475749899370776?s=20

The tweet doesn’t seem to be formatting as it normally does - at least not in my browser - so I’ll copy the content:

“The Waste Management Open has ended all alcohol sales to fans after over a dozen fans required ambulances, a woman fell off the deck of the grandstands, and over 30 fans blacked out.”

Their ticket checking system went down and they were letting anybody and everybody enter the course. This got out on TikTok and Twitter and they went over max capacity quickly and the fire marshall told them to shut it down to try and get people to leave.

Just saw a TikTok from a bartender that worked the site. He was saying estimates were that over 500k were onsite and many had rushed the VIP areas which were all you can drink. They eventually stopped serving all food and beverage to get the people out of there. Quite the shit show.

I’ve scanned the Twitter for the Tour and Tour Communications plus the website and have no earthly idea what the broadcast information is for the resumption of play.

Golf Channel? The ‘cock? Shit out of luck?

I think this explains coverage today: https://www.pgatour.com/article/news/latest/2024/02/10/how-to-watch-wm-phoenix-open-round-4-featured-groups-live-scores-tee-times-tv-times-tpc-scottsdale

It looks like ESPN+ (streaming) until 1pm when it moves to Golf Channel, then 3pm it swings over to NBC. It's not clear if it's available on the 'Cock before 3pm.

I think they just posted this though. It wasn't showing a few minutes ago. Maybe the website team is hung over.

Thanks. Heaven forbid the GC move off the DP World Tour for the conclusion of the 3rd round. Contracts! Sorry, can’t possibly do anything about this!

Guess NBC boots them for soccer.

Golf Channel guys just said (while Speith was on 16) something along the lines of “I’m sure the players would appreciate the atmosphere looking more like a golf tournament today”
That, the ZJ clip above, and the fact that this isn’t a signature event makes me wonder if the big names will skip right over this one in future years.

And yet this is one of the more entertaining non-major tournaments. I'm starting to wrap my head around maybe the PGA Tour should just implode and fail.

Hoffman clipped him but Scottie looks to be on cruise control. Every approach is inside 15 feet. Even the bogey he was inside 25 feet from 230.

What a finish. He barely missed the birdie on 17 as well. Taylor is awesome.

(Also won me the week in the SoSH league).

TPC Scottsdale always delivers. Best stop on Tour. 6 playoffs in the last 11 years and no margin of victory greater than 2 shots. The back 9 is really awesome, particularly 13-18.

On to another candidate for best stop on Tour, Riv. 70 player field but there is a cut (top 50 and ties plus a 10 shot rule). The 4 sponsors exemptions are Tiger, Adam Scott, Gary Woodland and Will Zalatoris. 2 in a row for Scott, a board member. They should probably also just create a Tiger rule where he can play whenever he wants without having to actually use a sponsor exemption.

Really? I think the situation in Scottsdale is completely out of control. It's only a matter of time before there's a violent interaction between a lubed up fan and a player. Or a spectator dying. The atmosphere has devolved into a giant drunken spectacle. I'm far from a golf purist but a number of the players are starting to get really sick of the nonsense.

I like the course. So far as the TPCs go it's probably at least the best after Sawgrass, right? I do agree it seems to produce close finishes for whatever reason.

Pebble Beach, Riviera, Muirfield, East Lake, and Harbor Town all jump out as great venues. I'm sure I'm missing one or two others. The tour really does have some great stops.

I sort of find Torrey Pines... boring for tournament play? I'm sure it's beautiful in person just because of the location. It's just a lot of runway fairways with bunkers straddling the landing zone. Some bend left or right.

It's quirky but I'd add Kapalua as a good venue but otherwise that's a good list. I also agree about Torrey. For a scenic piece of land they don't have many scenic holes. They all blend together, long and narrow with bunkers. Is there even an iconic hole at Torrey? I guess that downhill par 3?

In general, yes. It got out of control on Saturday and that certainly needs to be addressed, they can't just throw their hands up and blame it on the rain and ticketing system issue.

A little heckling at a pro tournament doesn't bother me. That large crowd enhances the tournament in my view. It makes it feel like an important tournament even though it really isn't. And as stated, the golf itself is excellent at that tournament.

In short, I'd rather watch this than the Honda Classic.

If you all think this is bad, wait until the Ryder Cup next year. That's going to be a disaster.

Agreed. There is a line there, and it seems like it's being crossed. I want a raucous, rowdy crowd at this event. But that's totally different from the fans being assholes to the players, and there was too much of that out there. Horschel said afterward, "When you’re impacting the golf tournament, that’s where it gets a little bit too much. And when you’re saying personal things. The last couple of years, the guys I’ve played with, I’ve heard some personal stuff yelled at them. And I think that’s just not right.”

This shouldn't be like Cameron Indoor Stadium when Duke is playing Carolina. It's still a golf tournament. Rowdy, yes. Loud, yes. Even while the guys are hitting, yes. But the personal stuff, the abusive stuff... absolutely not. That needs to end.

This logo is so bad. Maybe it will become iconic only for how awful it is.
It's basically a modern stylized Le Tigre logo but facing right. And "Sun Day Red" is weird. Sun Day. I'm sure the committee that created all this was very well paid.

I always thought the Nike TW logo was lousy and Tiger's weird "W" claw mark logo isn't good either.

Any word on shoes? FJ Premiers seemed like the only thing Tiger could wear after the crash. Well, the second crash.

I really like the Nike TW logo and I think it's kind of perfect as a brand logo. Simple and recognizable. This could be the logo for just about any forgettable clothing brand.

This feels too much like a ripoff of Greg Norman's Shark brand which I rather like as far as logo's go.

Sort of like Slazenger cat and the Greg Norman shark were heavily borrowed from:

78132

I actually like the multi-color shark too.
