4/22 - Rodon vs. Sears

A matchup of lefties, one of whom was one of the main pieces in the worst recent Cashman trade (Montas deal).

A random thought experiment for this morning:

If the Yankees had ponied up and traded for Luis Castillo instead of Montas, where are we today? They potentially don't have Soto, but they also wouldn't have Rodon and instead would have a devastating 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation.

Anyway, that all doesn't matter, just something that crossed my mind when I saw the matchup.

Go Yankees!

Castillo would have cost Volpe or Dominguez or both, plus they would have made him cut his awesome hair.

Rodon seems to be pitching well this season so far. His WHIP seems crazy high to sustain his ERA and he's definitely not worth the contract but it's the Yankees so it really doesn't seem to affect them.
I'm not picking on Judge really because he's one of my favorite players but I'm still shocked at the contract they gave him. He was old(ish) and had several injuries and I was predicting a slowing down for him. Do you think he's just in a funk and will get back to his awesome self or is this some noticeable slow bat speed issue that is likely here to stay?

I actually think that Judge is having trouble adjusting to the whirlwind of intensity that is Juan Soto batting ahead of him.

NY has been playing a lot of cold weather games too, I'm not worried. I do think that Dominguez coming back (June?) will give the whole lineup a jolt, counting the days until that.

That was some serious ump show and YES has showed me that I *need* field mics on managers at all times.

Terrible umpiring, but in some ways amazing broadcasting.

Jomboy incoming in 3... 2... 1...

The funny part is that we don't even need Jomboy for this one - we heard it all. Also he said on Talkin Yanks that they're going to the game today so he didn't even get to see the broadcast. I'm sure he's getting tweeted at like crazy though.

I don't know if I'd rather he be hurt or in a terrible mental funk. I guess I'd prefer a minor injury that can be fixed with a couple weeks off.

Judge has gone through rough patches before. As long as he’s healthy he’ll work through it. I just hope he’s healthy.

I do wonder what his day/night splits are though.

From the beginning of the season the hitting emphasis seems to have been to aggressively work the count and see as many pitches as possible. Which is good. But maybe opposing teams have adjusted, are more focused on throwing strikes earlier in the count, and the Yankees are falling behind more and need to recalibrate a little. Dunno.

It looks like they aren't picking up the ball at all and, in fairness, Sears is pitching well.

I wonder this about the whole team. It feels like this is going to be yet another season where they all can't hit during the day.
Yeah. The suckitude goes beyond day games but I do wonder if all the ones they’ve had lately are making it harder for Judge to work his way through what could have been a more modest slump.

But whatever. We’ve seen issues with day games and cold weather before. It sucks, but this lineup is kind of like a high performance sports car. When conditions are just right it runs freaking awesome. But parts break down a lot and if the conditions aren’t good, well…

Balls 2 3 and 4 were all low, but have also been called strikes in this game. Who knows.

Glad I haven’t seen any of this so far, hope NY can win it in 9.

And the bullpen is starting to regress to the mean. I keep seeing posts on Twitter about how few Yankees relief pitchers generate swings and misses and eventually that is going to really cost them.

Especially with our infield defense.

NY did this a lot last year, bringing a relief pitcher right back two days in a row when they didn't need to. It didn't make sense to me then and I thought they stopped it, but nope.

They deserve to lose this game.
This is what I was going to say. I actually don't even mind giving up the home run, they aren't scoring runs today and it's better not to waste any pitchers in extra innings.

Y'all are going to change your tune when Volpe, Soto and Judge go back-to-back-to-back to walk it off*.

*-denotes it is much more likely for them all three to strike out.

Why was this scheduled as a day game in April anyways?
Passover starting tonight maybe?

Marinaccio should have started the inning, he is really well rested. Not many issues with bullpen management this year, but stop bringing back guys consecutively like that, it didn't work last year and it didn't work today.
