The pitching matchup looks bad on paper, but Schmidt was better than his line looked like last time out. I think he'll be fine today.

Let's hope the bats wake up after that afternoon atrocity yesterday.

Heh there are numerous story lines there that would make for great TV drama:

- Gausman is intentionally sabotaging Schmidt
- Gausman is helping, Schmidt throws 7 no-hit innings. Jays hitters pummel Gausman after the game
- both pitchers have bad days and accusations fly from every direction
- and so on

Soto walk. Judge HR. Stanton HR is a sequence we will see less often, but damn, I'm sure glad Cashman didn't DFA Stanton yesterday.

What has Luke Weaver done to merit this leash? Other than be a bad pitcher for most of his career, of course.

I don't care that much about having a mediocre long man that is just filling space in blowouts, but part of that is understanding that he's a crappy long man and shouldn't be trusted to right the ship

Probably the first time so far this season when I didn't like how Boone managed the bullpen. I understand trying to steal some outs with a RP when you have a big lead and all, but damn, Weaver was really laboring at the end there. For multiple batters before he was pulled.

He should have been pulled after the double, and at absolute latest after the walk. Keeping him in there was just hoping for lineouts, which is a silly game to play

Yeah. Maye Blake saw something and wanted to roll with it, but it was weird and not what I expected.

Holmes closes out a 9-8 win.

The good: Some grindy ABs, some power, and the offense looked good with Toronto's ace on the mound.
The bad: Seeing a big lead get whittled down to one run kind of sucked. Have to use the two best RPs sucked too.
The ugly: Soto in RF looked a little ugly today. At least two plays in RF that I saw where he didn't have good reads. But he'll get more comfortable out there, I'm sure.
Bonus ugly: Vogelbach's baserunning.

For all the criticism, still a good win. Hope the offense can do this tomorrow in the light of day.

Coldish weather probably contributed to some of these issues with the pitching, on both sides.
Yes, I got here late but definitely part of what I was going to say. Weaver was good for his first five outs, but then NY had another long half inning and it is cold and he got hit.

Vogelbach's baserunning was spectacularly bad, he is not playable. He tried to go from second to third on a grounder to Volpe, and Volpe's throw to third beat him by literally 50 feet. And the forceout at second, I couldn't believe they got the guy until I realized who it was again.
