Game 41
Early this year, my dear mom passed away.
I’m missing her deeply this Mother’s Day.
As I often do, when life’s out of sorts:
I look for distraction, turning to sports.
Today, I’ll take in 2 games on TV:
The Celtics, Game 7, Red Sox, Game 3.
The Celts could have swept the Sixers this round
if they had stayed calm, called time outs, and found
a way to hold on to 2 late-game leads,
but alas, it’s 3-3, and this team needs
to play its most focused game of the year
to give Garden fans some much-needed cheer.
Fenway would love a win on the West End.
Our last 2 games have not had the best trend.
The Sox have had trouble closing out, too,
Saturday’s game felt just like déjà vu.
Ahead in the ninth, our closer, once feared,
failed to get outs and the lead disappeared.
Pitch clock violations! Kike’s bad throw!
Worse loss of the year two days in a row.
There were some bright spots in this epic fail:
Refsnyder’s 3 hits, 8 innings from Sale,
Pablo’s debut and… well… that’s about all.
It’s time to shape up and play better ball.
We’ve lost 4 of 5, and we’re fading fast.
Look at the standings. We’ve dropped into last.
Get back to winning. The Sox can be great.
(Just play for 9 innings. Don’t stop at 8.)
With two dismal losses out of the way,
how ‘bout a miracle for Mother’s Day?
Two big Boston wins that both beget streaks
where our beloved teams both play well for weeks.
Sports can make tough days more easy to bear.
Win 2 for Mom and for moms everywhere.
