Kevin McAvoy (3 IP, single, BB, K) and Enfember Martinez (2 IP, 2 K) have combined on a 1-hit road shutout of the McNamara division leaders through 5 innings. McAvoy's season ERA drops to 2.79, with batters hitting .229 against him, and he's got a GO/AO ratio of 3.22.

The Spinners offense got 1 in the t-4th (Jordan Betts SF after a Joseph Monge double) and added 4 in the t-5th (3 singles, a bunt + E1, and another SF) for a 5-0 cushion as Hudson bats in the b-6th.

I have a feeling the Andrew Miller deal will be looked upon by baseball historians in the same light as the Heathcliff Slocumb trade. This kid is ridiculous -- and he won't turn 22 until April.

Ugly, wild night for Trey tonight.  Growing pains.

9 runs in 2 IP so far. Just 4 of them earned, but that doesn't explain away the 4 walks. Or the two line drive doubles. Or the 1st-inning grand slam. Or the three-run blast in the 2nd.

Growing pains indeed. This is where that wise sage Tim McCarver might say something oh-so-insightful like, "If baseball was supposed to be easy, they wouldn't need any minor leagues."

EDIT - And that's it for Ball, as he hits the showers after just the two frames. 5 H, 1 K, and 29 of 56 pitches for strikes.

Crap, he's back to being a full-on spaz again.

I'd much rather have him pound the zone and get hit hard than distribute his pitches like a center-pivot lawn sprinkler and walk the ball park.

Well, maybe just part-time spaz and maybe that's a sign of growth.

Kukuk breezed through the first three innings. He unraveled in the fourth - four walks and two WPs will do that to you - but came back in the fifth to strikeout (swinging) the first two batters. The third batter walked but was picked off first.

So it was good that he could limit the damage in the fourth and pull it together for the fifth.

And the kicker will be Miller coming back in the offseason on a reasonable deal.
He'll be one of the top relievers on the market. It won't be a reasonable deal if he comes back.
