Let’s not get too excited about a player in A ball. The last time I got excited about a 17-18 year old his name was Bryce Harper and pitcher wise it was Justin Verlander. I’ve relegated myself to the fact that our beloved franchise is being run into the ground and until JH pays attention to his baseball team and less on the soccer pitch.

Holy crap. 94 fastball at age 18, and he knows where it's going (super low walks).
Yeah, not bad for a guy they signed for $10k last November.

Side note: his SoxProspects page is pretty weird. It's the only one I've seen where they don't include a city of birth & they misspelled "Dominican".

It does say he throws 93-94, though.

https://soxprospects.com/players/batista-gilberto.htm

I bumped him up from 186 to 110 last update, but looks like I should have bumped him further.

In my defense, he allowed 13 earned runs in his 1st 13.2 innings this season (8.56 ERA).

Since then he has allowed 1 run in 23 innings (0.39 ERA) on 13 hits & 2 walks with 26 strikeouts.

He has pitched 18 straight scoreless innings over 5 games.

In your defense, you're ranking a thousand prospects.

I'm too lazy to calculate his FIP/xFIP, but those component stats suggest that his first 13 innings were some awful luck. As the luck normalized, suddenly it's a lot more obvious.

Yeah, it's a bit challenging for the guys with no scouting reports & who I've never seen throw a baseball, but I think they're getting better & better each time.

some people just roll out of bed feeling miserable.
Yeah, that's why I've been putting more of my focus into this & less into arguing on the main forum.

I think I've been letting a little too much negativity seep into some of my writeups here, though, & am going to try to shift the balance from like 85/15 that it is now to 90/10.

Gilberto Batista actually started today
He allowed a run in the 2nd to end the scoreless streak.

1-1 after 2.

Also, I think I'll probably stop posting anything but the coolest Red Sox highlights in here. I was about to post the Reyes homer when Whitlock allowed the 3-run homer & I was like I don't want to bring this negativity in here.

Jesus Garcia (#61) is pitching for DSL Blue. He's pitched 2 scoreless innings so far.

Garcia, who turns 18 in November, signed in January for $130k, which is the highest bonus the Red Sox gave a pitcher in IFA since '21 when they gave 4 guys more than that (led by Jedixon Paez's $450k). Unless you count Chansol Lee who recently got $300k. Which I guess you can, but it feels different.

This is the SoxProspects scouting report:

Scouting Report: Said to be the top pitching prospect in the Red Sox 2023 international signing class. Fastball hit low 90s as an amateur at age 16. Solid slider.
https://soxprospects.com/players/garcia-jesus.htm

Coming into today, Garcia has pitched 38.2 innings in 10 games with a 3.26 ERA, 36 hits, 15 walks & 33 strikeouts.

YOELY isn't starting for DSL Blue today. Neither is Kleyver Salazar (#101), their starting catcher.

I think my DSL rankings need some tweaking, so I'm going to probably run through some of that in here today by position.

Starting with catcher as I think I have Gerardo Rodriguez & Kleyver Salazar too close, so not sure if I'm over-ranking one or under-ranking the other.

They're outrageously good. Don't be too hard on yourself. You already bumped him 76 slots based on minimal data. Watching these guys rise is half of the fun.

DSL Catchers
#57 Andruw Musett (Red) - 17 (turns 18 in November): .290/.434/.419, .853 OPS, 29/22 bb/k - $90k bonus (2023)
#92 Gerardo Rodriguez (Red) - 17 (turns 18 in December): .345/.391/.496, .887 OPS, 8/13 bb/k - $50k bonus (2023)
#101 Kleyver Salazar (Blue) - 17 (turns 18 next May): .241/.383/.348, .731 OPS, 25/25 bb/k - $175k bonus (2023)
#206 Liosward Marin (Blue) - 17 (turns 18 next May): .169/.254/.237, .491 OPS, 7/14 bb/k - $10k bonus (2023)

I actually don't dislike the rankings here as much as I thought I would after re-looking at more of the picture.

Luis Jerez (#164) came in for the 5th (1-2-3 inning with a strikeout). I have Jerez a bit lower because he turns 20 next week, but he's had a solid debut season:

3.31 ERA in 32.2 innings, 29 hits, 9 walks & 30 strikeouts. He's from Havana, Cuba & signed for $18k this past December.

I have Alex Castillo, who hit the 3-run homer, #225 on my list. Coming into the game, he had a .559 OPS. In 76 PAs he had 3 walks (3.9%) & 30 strikeouts (39.5%).

So I still feel ok about my ranking. He signed for $50k this January & turns 18 in September.

I will mentioned that the Red Sox game will start in 3 hours, Chris Sale v. Patrick Corbin.

3.31 ERA in 32.2 innings, 29 hits, 9 walks & 30 strikeouts. He's from Havana, Cuba & signed for $18k this past December.
After the delay, Jerez came out, so he only pitched one inning, a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout.

After him was Brahian Rijo (#217) who turns 17 next week. I give him the benefit of the doubt a bit due to his age, but he's been pretty bad this year. He had a 9.53 ERA in 17 innings before today, & raised it to 10.70 by allowing 3 runs in 0.1 innings on 3 walks & a hit.

Jean Carlos Reyes (#222) came in & struck out a batter to end the inning, & also pitched a 1-2-3 7th with a strikeout.

DSL Red up 9-5 in the top of the 8th.

Red Sox Blue lost 8-7.

Yoiber Ruiz (#81) was 3-4. He had 3 of their 6 hits (all singles).

Frederik Jimenez (#170) was 0-1 with 3 walks. He had 3 of their 9 walks.

This is the one thing that worries me about Anthony. Even Nikos Kavadas posted a lower K rate in Greenville (26%), and he is striking out around 40% of the time this year between AA and AAA.

Obviously Anthony is much younger and has time to figure things out, but 31% is a lot of K's for A+ ball. His BABIP is an unsustainable .410 right now, which is disguising that K rate in his overall numbers quite a bit.

Yeah, it's been a weird run after the amazing start. Mayer went on the DL with a shoulder thing after his stretch of strikeouts. It seems like Roman is hitting the ball too hard during this stretch for it to be an injury issue, but hopefully he gets it figured back out soon.

3 more hits for Arias today. His OPS is now over 0.9 and OBP over 0.4 as it looks like he can draw walks too. Add in the strong defensive profile and he's got a chance to go flying up the SP rankings down the line

Yup. The guy who said I might have been underrating him at 26 could have been right (SoxProspects has him 45).

It will be interesting to see if he adds more pop as he matures.
