Devers did the only thing he could on that play. He was dead if he tried to go back and they could have gotten a double play if he did. Running towards home is what you are supposed to do there.

Not at all. 1st and 3rd, grounder to 3rd, he goes on contact. If he holds, it's quite possibly a DP. A not-hobbled baserunner on 1st stands a small chance of getting to 3rd.
