I had to leave the house once the bases were loaded, but my husband watched it for me. I may have gotten West Nile virus out there, the mosquitoes were so thick. But I didn't have a heart attack watching Betts hit with the bases loaded, so that's a good thing.

Totally agree with this. I am happy they won and I am not a baseball manager but if what i have read on here that Cora could have removed Refsnyder after his out and put Martin in that line up spot so as to have him available to come out again for the 9th we that is not good managing.
Yeah, this. It was actually a perfect double-switch opportunity with Refsnyder making the last out of the 7th and both Abreu and Yoshida on the bench.

Except Cora was probably not eager to put either one out in LF at that stage of the game. Abreu presumably unacquainted with the Wall.

Show your work.
2nd and 3rd 1 out has a run expectancy of 1.39, with 2 out it's .55. So you're giving up .84 runs, I'll call it .8 because a small percent of the time Martin walks or gets hit even if they know he isn't swinging.

https://www.pitcherlist.com/adjusting-for-the-current-run-expectancy-matrix/

Martin gives up 0.14 runs an inning and Schreiber gives up 0.43 runs an inning. Even if you want to argue Schreiber isn't pitching well right now and go with his 7.45 august era then he's giving up 0.83 an inning then it's still a slight positive.

You could have argued for a double switch, which lets you keep Martin in, but that also makes the defense worse by some amount. That also assumes that they know they're going to get 2 on and 1 out when Martin's spot comes up. If they go 1-2-3 I'm sure he stays in for the 9th. If Story singles or sac flies then maybe they send Martin up there. If they have 2 out and a man on 1st I'm not sure what they do. But I don't think there's any argument for just sacrificing an out in such a massive spot late in a close game.

Cora flat out won that game. Martin in the 8th was brilliant. PH for him also brilliant

Couldn’t he have moved Duval to Left and put Abreu into center? I totally see what you are saying but I just think the pitcher for the 9th would be more important.

You and me both brother. I turned off the PC and checked my cell phone 5 minutes later. There was NO way in the world I could watch that.

It really is a giant hamstring that Schreiber pumpkined (not shocking, maybe should have sold high on a guy who's been DFA'd before) and Whitlock has looked bleh all year (is he still hurt?).

Kenley hasn't been available 3 days in a row, but I guess he will be tomorrow... need a fresh arm with him on the IL otherwise.

The defense was costly garbage. Not wanting to put in Yoshida or Abreu when they're leading is fine with me.

You guys do as you need, but, to me, you have to take the bad with the good in these kinds of games and watch the whole thing. Otherwise, you could miss historic defensive or pitching half innings we've had with, for example, Pedro or Foulkey or Derek Lowe. Of course, any physical condition that people have that might be aggravated by stress and I back off. For example, Vinny Testaverde's dad couldn't watch Vinny play for Vinny's last few years because of his heart condition.

For those of you who, like me, signed up for Apple TV+ to watch last night's (and last week's) game, if you haven't already, check out Ted Lasso. I am 5 episodes in an it is one of the more enjoyable shows I have watched recently.

Yeah, my friends have been telling me for a long time that I would love it. Now that I have the free trial, I suppose I should give it a try.

I would do the same, but my hatred for Apple is such that I won't give it a fair shake. Fuck Apple. Hard. With handcuffs on. Superglue their lips shut.

That series is great. Also, Coda is an excellent movie, and Hijack another terrific series.

The Twitter link says that Alex Verdugo is the first Red Sox to lead-off three consecutive games with home runs. There are two other players who have done that, including one-time Soxer, Brady Anderson, who did it with the Os in 1996, beginning with a game against Boston.
ESPN says third time it has been done since 1900. I hope they pitch to him today

Wade Boggs hit 24 HR in 1987, a number he never approached in any other season. Wonder why?
It was the year of the juiced ball. Everyone hit a ton of homers in 1987.

If both Devers and Reyes are banged up, you have to put Reyes on the IL and get someone else up. Even if he'll be better in a couple of days, the team can't get by with a two man bench.

Reyes is in the starting lineup today
