To follow up on Roche's Tweet. Alexi Ogando started following @RedSoxBeisbol (Official Red Sox Account in Spanish) so it's basically done it looks like.

Eh. Apparently he has some pretty serious injury concerns. I'd stay far away, and I'll be surprised if they get serious innings from him.

Like when Messi followed Chelsea last month and everyone freaked out.

Say hello to the 16 year old kid Jake Wesley who had everyone's panties in a bunch when Lester was getting ready to sign. Say hello to Peter King and all the other dick heads form the media over the past 10 days with the Patriots controversy.  It's a weird time we live in.

Why? What harm is there to sign him on the cheap?
Because the risk is fairly high, and I can't see much of a reward for taking on that risk.

Am I confusing you with someone else or wasn't it you that was banging the table to sign Josh Johnson? Beachy? Medlen? I know you were in on one of those guys at least.

Anyway I don't see the difference. I wasn't a huge fan of Johnson in particular and I thought the upper levels of the minors were stuffed enough, but after the trades they've made and factoring in that Ogando could conceivably return to his premiere reliever status (and thus not blocking the kids from AAA starts to get back on the horse), I'd be on board with this. I assume it's negligible money on a split deal so why the hell not?
Josh Johnson.

I guess I just don't see the point of signing him because it sounds like it's pretty likely to get injured. Then again, it's not very likely JJ was going to stay healthy, and as it's been pointed out the cost is going to be low so I guess it doesn't really matter all that much.

I guess I just don't see the downside. Losing Drake Britton? That's about all the Sox would be risking....

Ogando has a 38% GB rate if I'm not mistaken. This signing doesn't make sense at all. Ben has only targeted ground ball pitchers so I think Rochie has a source that lied to him on this one.

Perhaps he only targeted GB pitchers because he thought they were undervalued. And perhaps he thinks an injured Ogando, is also undervalued, regardless of his GB/FB tendencies.

Unless it's no more than a minor league deal with an invite to spring training, I don't see the logic of signing Ogando.  Maybe he has a high ceiling if he stays healthy, but the team isn't in a position where they need to use a 40-man spot for that kind of gamble.

Well he is 31 with a long injury history but he has options which makes him somewhat valuable.

You could give him a minor league contract with an invite and a out clause if he isn't on the 40 man by May 31st he can leave.  He is a useful bullpen arm.

Ogando has great stuff, the only knock against him is that he's injury prone and doesn't have the stamina to repeat his delivery as a SP.

Shifting back to reliever should improve his health..his ugly ERA last year was mostly due to a 4.1 IP sample where he gave up 9 ER and was clearly pitching hurt.

Not that I'm against Ogando but you have a healthy RP out there in Badenhop and pitched well for you last year, why not stick with the devil you know?  Even if he has the expected uptick in HR as last year was kind of flukey giving up only 1, he should still be a quality arm for you.  I'm shocked another team hasn't signed him by now.

A healthy Badenhop is still the 10th or 11th man on a 12-man staff. Workman can fill that role just fine, and he has the upside of being better than that. A healthy Ogando is a relief ace. The team needs a relief ace behind Uehara, even if Uehara's late-season implosion isn't a sign of things to come.

If Ogando were healthy he wouldn't still be unsigned. A healthy Keith Foulke would also be a relief ace. If the contract is for the minimum with performance incentives I have no problem with signing Ogando but I would expect nothing.

So they might be looking essentially to swap Ogando for Mujica? Saves money, offers more upside, but takes on significant injury/health risk. Interesting.

Ogando has been incredibly effective out of the pen. This might end up being a waste of a roster spot and some money, but it's a risk I like seeing them take. If he gets back to the reliever he was, the pen is suddenly in pretty good shape.

Roster bonuses suggests he starts on the DL or has minor league options?

He's got two options, but he'll have to clear waivers to be sent down.  I imagine that between the injury concerns and the old "gentlemen's agreement" stuff, they aren't foreseeing difficulty in getting him to Pawtucket if necessary.

Still don't see this as a great investment with his injury risk, but if he passes the physical, they might strike gold.

So a 1 year deal with incentives built in and swapping out Mujica who hasn't looked great anyway.  I like it.

I would imagine they pick up some salary to deal Mujica.

Reserving judgment re: any further dominoes that may fall as a result of this signing, what's not to like here?  Low risk (monetarily speaking) - high reward (performance upside).  Thumbs up to Ben.

Source: #Red Sox in recent days have expressed a willingness to move RH reliever Edward Mujica, who will earn $4.75M this season.
YES PLEASE, my distaste for Mujica is probably not rational since his #'s looked decent after a terrible start. Just seemed like his outs were loud.

I've been on a "dump Mujica, use his money to sign Badenhop" bandwagon all offseason to the chagrin of some.

I think Britton will have at least a couple of valuable years for someone. Maybe Alan Embree lite.

Drake Britton DFA

The Sox organization is getting so strong that, when Cherington is done purging marginal major league talent from his 40 man roster, it will almost entirely consist only of major leaguers and bona fide prospects.  Virtually every AAAA stalled or out of options former prospect has been dealt or designated.  I might be missing someone, but here is the list of who was removed from the roster since the end of last season:

  1. Britton
  2. Ranaudo
  3. Butler
  4. Middlebrooks
  5. DLR
  6. Webster
  7. Wilson
  8. Weeks
  9. Lavarnway
  10. Francisco (on the roster for just a few days)
  11. Hassan
Nobody on the list above was ticketed for regular major league duty in 2015 and almost every one of them was unlikely to be a 25 man roster fixture.  The list of players who could be predictably DFA or dropped from the 40 man roster is down to few if any.  I like this 40 man roster much better than the one that they ended with last season:

Competing for jobs in the pen:(* = options remaining)

1) Uehara
2) Tazawa *
3) Ogando *
4) Mujica
5) Breslow
6) Varvaro
7) Ross Jr.*
8) Layne *
9) Wright *
10) Workman *

Likely ml pieces are:

1) Rodriguez
2) Escobar
3) Hembree
4) Barnes
5) Spuill

A trade seems likely, but there are many options that could be exercised among those competing for the 7 pen spots if BC decides he wants very deep depth.  The Bucket might have the best pen they've ever seen?

Edit: Option on Varvaro removed, TY Bigpupp
