If that song is stuck in your head now, you’re welcome.

The US U23s played a pre-Olympic friendly vs Mexico last night. They won 2-1. The match wasn’t streamed, but the tweets made it sound like a cagey affair with the US scoring in first and second half stoppage time while Mexico clawed one back at the whistle.

Monday’s match against Japan will be streamed.

The roster has my 2 favorite Chicago kids - Guti & Brady, the former getting the start and playing 73 minutes last night.

GOALKEEPERS (3): Christopher Brady (Chicago Fire FC; Naperville, Ill.), John Pulskamp (Sporting KC; Bakersfield, Calif.), Patrick Schulte (Columbus Crew; St. Charles, Mo.)

DEFENDERS (6): Maximilian Dietz (SpVgg Greuther Furth/GER; Frankfurt, Germany), Nathan Harriel (Philadelphia Union; Oldsmar, Fla.), Bryan Reynolds (Westerlo/BEL; Fort Worth, Texas), John Tolkin (New York Red Bulls; Chatham, N.J.), Jonathan Tomkinson (Bradford City/ENG; Plano, Texas), Caleb Wiley (Atlanta United FC; Atlanta, Ga.)

MIDFIELDERS (7): Paxten Aaronson (Eintracht Frankfurt/GER; Medford, N.J.), Gianluca Busio (Venezia/ITA; Greensboro, N.C.), Benjamin Cremaschi (Inter Miami CF; Key Biscayne, Fla.), Jack McGlynn (Philadelphia Union; Queens, N.Y.), Aidan Morris (Columbus Crew; Ft Lauderdale, Fla.), Tanner Tessmann (Venezia/ITA; Birmingham, Ala.), Obed Vargas (Seattle Sounders FC; Anchorage, Alaska)

FORWARDS (7): Esmir Bajraktarevic (New England Revolution; Appleton, Wisc.), Taylor Booth (Utrecht/NED; Eden, Utah), Johan Gomez (Eintracht Braunschweig/GER; Keller, Texas), Brian Gutierrez (Chicago Fire FC; Chicago, Ill.), Bernard Kamungo (FC Dallas; Abilene, Texas), Duncan McGuire (Orlando City SC; Omaha, Neb.), Indiana Vassilev (St. Louis City SC; Savannah, Ga.)

U-23s, right? There seem to be massive areas of need in that roster due to injury and players not being released, specifically CB and the #9 (assuming Guti is being used as a winger or more withdrawn). Seems like our Revolution boy Esmer got some run. Looks like Vargas got the winner at the death.

Right, U23. Was thinking that they got here with the U20 CONCACAF trophy, didn’t think beyond that.

Some definite holes in the roster that should get filled for the Olympics, but look at the fullback and central midfield depth. Very heartening.

Falmouth
Im supremely confident that given their amazing start, the Scots will qualify, but seeing them do so by holding down the fort and stymieing Spain would be so delicious.

Spain goals are never inevitable these days.
I’ve been with you on the limp-ness of the Spain attack for a while now. That being said, from what I saw today (and I didn’t see the whole game), Spain was much more dangerous. It had been the same old pass around the horseshoe to hopefully loft a cross into Morata, pretty much how the USMNT looks against bunkered teams. Just pure frustration to watch. Today though they had very different patterns of play, much more effective runs. They got into Zone 14 pretty consistently, or at least Zone 14 adjacent, like on the fringes of 13 and 15. I’m sure the original comment about the inevitable goal was more about Scotland having a goal overturned so the Spain goal was the obvious next thing to happen, but from what I saw today it actually shockingly felt like Spain was dangerous and would score.

Story around social media that 2 Swedish fans were shot and killed in Brussels. News made its way into the locker rooms and players are not going out after the half.

Edit: In trying to learn more, I came across video purporting to be of the shooting on Twitter. Be careful out there. Given the current state of disinformation & manipulation, I think it will be a while before we know what actually happened here. But so very sad.

Yeah the game has been suspended, horrible news. It's a very important game in terms of qualifying, Belgium solidified itself in qualifying with a win, Sweden really hard pressed to qualify with a loss.
